In thefinal report on the Beacon Centers, 81 percent ofstudents believed that the Beacon helped them finishtheir homework more often, 78 percent said that theybelieved the Beacon helped them get better gradesand more than 3 in 4 students shared that the Beaconhelped them to feel better about their school work(78 percent). 37Communities Organizing Resources to AdvanceLearning Initiative (CORAL)—CA: An evaluation ofthe CORAL afterschool programs found that studentparticipants designated as English language learnersmade the same gains in reading as their peers whowere further ahead in reading. 38Schools & Homes in Education (SHINE)—Nesquehoning, PA: Students participating in theSHINE afterschool program—almost all of whom werereferred to the program for academic reasons and astrong majority who were determined to haveremedial needs—also saw improvements in theiracademic performance. The 2012 evaluation of theprogram found that close to three-quarters ofstudents who regularly attended SHINE and showed aneed for remediation made improvements in theirreading and math skills. 39 Parents also saw their childmake academic progress, with almost all parentsagreeing that their child had improved in reading (94percent) and math (95 percent). The long-termevaluation of SHINE saw similar positive results.Between 2006 and 2012, students participating inSHINE who improved their academic performanceranged from 71-83 percent. Between 2007 and 2012,between 79-90 percent of SHINE students received asatisfactory or passing grade in reading and between79-92 percent received a satisfactory or passing gradein math.
