Beacon Community Centers—New York, NY: APolicy Studies Associates, Inc.’s three-year evaluationof the Beacon Community Centers in New York—aninitiative to provide middle schoolers with academicenrichment, life skills, career awareness, civicengagement, wellness, culture and art—found thatoverall, Beacon Center students expressedconfidence in their school preparedness and werehighly motivated to continue through high school and<strong>into</strong> higher education. For example, in regard toacademic preparedness and attitudes toward school,more than 9 in 10 student participants reported thatthey tried hard in school (95 percent), did well inschool (91 percent) and paid attention in class (93percent). Close to 9 in 10 students shared that theywere always prepared for class (88 percent). 10 Askingparticipants about their academic aspirations, the2010 report on the Beacon Centers found that nearlyall students wanted to graduate from high school (98percent) and more than 8 in 10 wanted to graduatefrom college (83 percent). 11 Additionally, studentsparticipating in the afterschool program had strongschool-day attendance rates. The average schoolattendance rate was 94 percent for participants inthe 5 th -7 th grade and 93 percent for participants inthe 8 th grade. 12Communities Organizing Resources to AdvanceLearning Initiative (CORAL)—CA: The CORALInitiative, located in five cities across California,focuses on providing a balanced literacy program—which includes reading, book discussions, writing,skill development activities, as well as enrichmentactivities—for kids attending low-performingschools. 13 The evaluation of CORAL found that theafterschool program helped to foster a sense ofengagement and belonging among studentparticipants. 14 Almost all students shared that therewas an adult at the program who they could talk to,90 percent of children reported that they felt safe atthe program, and more than 7 in 10 children (71percent) said they felt that they belonged at CORAL.Students who had a very strong sense of belongingin the program also saw a positive change in theirCommunities Organizing Resources toAdvance Learning Initiative (CORAL)Evaluator: Public/Private VenturesEvaluation Design: Non-experimentalSchool Engagement Findings:- 90 percent of children reported that they feltsafe at the program (p = n/a)- 71 percent said they felt that they belonged atCORAL (p = n/a)- Comparing results from fall 2004 to spring2006, students who had a very strong senseof belonging at CORAL:o Liked school more (p = .001)ooBeacon Community CentersEvaluator: Policy Studies AssociatesEvaluation Design: Non-experimentalSchool Engagement Findings:- 95 percent of Beacon students reported thatthey tried hard in school (p = n/a)- 91 percent of participants reported that theydid well in school (p = n/a)- 93 percent of participants reported that theypaid attention in class (p = n/a)- 88 percent of participants reports that theywere always prepared for class (p = n/a)- 98 percent of participants wanted tograduate from high school (p = n/a)- 88 percent of participants wanted tograduate from college (p = n/a)- The average school attendance rate was 94percent for participants in the 5 th -7 th gradeand 93 percent for participants in the 8 thgrade (p = n/a)Were better able to pay attention andconcentrate in class (p = .001)Were more likely to want to go to school(p = .001)7
