Part B - Health Facility Briefing and PlanningDESIGN150 .6.00150 .7.00150 .8.00150 .9.00150 .10.00GeneralThe nu<strong>mb</strong>er of A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bays required depends on the services providedby the Hospital or Day Procedure Unit.Any Hospital without an Emergency Unit, regardless of its size or level ofservice shall have a minimum of one A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bay.Any Hospital with an Emergency Unit shall have one A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bay for eachResuscitation Room/Bay or a minimum of one.The A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Collection/Drop Off Points in any Hospital must be discreetand shall be covered.A<strong>mb</strong>ulance access to and from a Day Procedure Unit must be readilyaccessible. A direct and dedicated way is re<strong>com</strong>mended.Suitable access ways for trolleys will be flat (ie no ramps) and provideadequate turning circles/workspace for trolleys and carers between theentry/exit and the departments requiring access.Doorways should be designed to allow easy access for trolleys and carers(<strong>au</strong>tomatic doors are re<strong>com</strong>mended).The need for a<strong>mb</strong>ulance vehicles to reverse should be minimised. Drivethroughfacilities minimise the risk to other pedestrians including staff.Building Service RequirementsIn A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bays serving Hospitals which include an Emergency Unit, thefollowing additional requirements shall apply:1. A lockable storage cupboard or room no less than 2 m2 shall be providedfor A<strong>mb</strong>ulance supplies. The cupboard or room shall have adjustableshelves and be lockable with a separate key or keypad lock.2. A hose cock with attached hose shall be located close to an A<strong>mb</strong>ulanceBay serving an Emergency Unit. It is re<strong>com</strong>mended that the hose cock andhose be located in a discrete cabinet or recessed bay.3. An inter<strong>com</strong> system shall be provided between the A<strong>mb</strong>ulance door and theEmergency Unit Reception/Clerical Area, Triage Area or Staff Station. TheInter<strong>com</strong> system shall be integrated with a security CCTV system located toclearly show those requesting entry.4. Emergency Units in Level 5 or 6 Facilities will require a DecontaminationArea. If provided, this may be integrated with the A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bay byincorporating shower heads in a section of the A<strong>mb</strong>ulance Bay ceiling. Thismay be further enhanced by a retractable plastic screen to contain the waterflow.
