D.JONESTHERE'S NO SUCH THING IN HANDGUNHUNTING AS BEING OVER-GUNNEDSometimes I get all choked up readingabout how Joe Blow shot a 125-poundwhitetail dead center through the lungswith his 80-ought-80 Hong Kong, only tohave the animal leave a profuse blood trailfor three miles that gradually petered outat about six miles. Our hero then spendsanother week, unsuccessfully, looking forhis slightly misplaced deer and concludeshe needs a 100-ought-100 Whizbang as theHong Kong just ain't no good no more.Ifyou haven't heard it before, let me bethe first to tell you no center lung shot deeris going to go very far without stacking up.If he is hit with a small caliber, particularlywhen the bullet does not exit, hemay not leave any blood trail at all becauselittle, if any blood will exit the small entrancewound. Internal bleeding though, will be profuse and death will occurshortly. This is the kind ofwound that willresult in the loss of a deer. At the hit, thedeer is going to head for the thickest coverhe can reach. Let's say the average lungshot deer that doesn't go down in his tracksand stay there will be immobilized within20 to 100 yards of where he is hit. He willalmost always be dead when found, whichmeans he will not move to give away hisposition when the hunter is nearby. In a lotof heavy cover you almost have to step onthe deer before you can see them.Deer are easily killed with well-placedbullets. No heart or lung shot deer will gofar. A solid liver hit also seems to kill veryquickly. Those stories ofbulletproofsuperdeerare just the mark of inexperienced orignorant hunters. The only time you can be sure of ananimal dropping in his tracks and stayingthere is when the brain or spinal column isdestroyed. Don't take that to mean I likehead and neck shots. I don't favor them atall and consider most ofthem I hear aboutthe mark of a rank amateur. A slightlymisplaced shot results in a jaw blown offorthe bullet passing through the throat. Ineither case, the animal usually cannotdrink and either slowly suffocates fromswollen tissue or dies of thirst and/orinfection. The statement that head andneck shots result in either an instant kill oran instant miss is born of sheer stupidity.Frequently, a heavy blood trail-and I'mnot talking about a few occasional dropsbut a track that looks as if the ground waspainted-will slow up and stop. I feel this isa case of the animal's blood pressure hav-ing become so low that additional externalbleeding just doesn't occur. By the sametoken, the animal is usually very neardeath and is often found very close to theend of the blood trail. In my experience, a low lung hit usuallyleaves a good blood trail. A high lung hitusually contains the blood within the chestcavity with correspondingly less externalbleeding. A blood trail usually does notstart at the point of impact. You may findhair, bone or tissue in the area where theanimal was standing, but blood usuallywon't be found for a few feet or yards, ifatall, particularly when the animal does notfall at impact.. In general, I favor a gun-ammunitioncombination that is likely to penetratecompletely through the animal on a broadsideshot. This allows ample penetrationon the angle shot through the shoulder or .diaphragm for penetration of the chestcavity. On a typical 45-degree angle shotfrom behind, I would aim to strike midbodyheight in line with the shoulder onthe far side. This allows the greatest marginoferror for a quickly fatal hit. From thefront angle, the mid-body height and junctionof the neck and shoulder is the bestaiming point. The idea is to penetrate thechest cavity with the bullet. On a broadsideshot, I would go for the shoulder-spine, _lung or heart, if possible. In my opinion, a center chest shot withany suitable handgun usually will result inthe deer's death within one minute.Even though deer aren't difficult to kill, only large caliber, powerful handgunsshould be used on them, I don't have muchuse for the .357 magnum for hunting verylarge animals. The .44 usually makeswounds three or four times larger than the.357, resulting in quicker, cleaner kills. Asmall whitetail, in optimum position forplacing an accurate killing shot, is about aslarge an animal l believe is within the.357's capability. Obviously, you can kill amoose with a .22. You can also kill themwith a .357, but that doesn't make eitherthe .22 or .357 as suitable for moose as alarger, more lethal weapon. It simply boils down to the fact thatwhile a lightweight, high-velocitymedium-bore bullet will doa decent job, under some conditions, a heavy, highvelocitybig-bore bullet will do a betterjobunder all conditions. There's no such thingin handgun hunting as being ......"overgunned:' ~18 AMERICAN HANDGUNNER . NOVEMSER/DECEMBER 1981
