That isn't unusual,but as it turns out he is an accomplishedfreestyle combat shooter, which is somewhatuncommon in' gun-restricted GreatBritain. If that weren't enough, he is also adesigner and fabricator of accessory itemsfor John Browning's 1911 Service Pistol.There can't be many of those (guns ormakers) in England. To me, Great Britainseems an unlikely place for Sarony's kindof operation, but he is oblivious to anyfeelings of being handicapped.Sarony was in the United States to showafter each shot, the barrel returns to thebattery position. If the tube can "float,"tight groups will be a sometime thing. If itreturns to exactly the same place after eachshot, five holes fired from a machine rest at50 yards can be covered with a silverdollar. The process of hand-working apistol to this point of excellence is called"accurizing;' and requires the services ofaskilled pistolsmith, plus a wheelbarrow fullof cash. (This isn't intended as a slam.Good 'smiths are worth the money, andfull-house jobs correctly done are a lot ofwork.) Manitoba R2X 2V6,ofr to the press and potential distributors afull-length recoil spring guide he has developed.After some discussion, I obtainedone of the few samples he had with him,promising I'd return to Arizona and try itout.Most full-length guides intended forColt's Government, Gold Cup, and Commandermodels-or copies thereof-aresimply that, a long rod to guide the spring.Depending on how well the slide andframe are fitted, they mayor may notgenerate some beneficial effect onaccuracy. They do tend to make recoil feela little smoother and, if they're heavyenough, reduce the kick, making for fasterrecovery between shots.Sarony's device, called the "Perfector,"does all of this and much more. First, aspring-loaded buffer has been built in inorder to protect the frame and slide againstcracking when they are subjected to steadydiets of top-end loads. Second, unlikeother guides (including the standard item)that are flanged at the back in order to seaton a matching shoulder in the frame, thePerfector rests on the front of the barrellink lug and presses against it in such a wayas to push the lug upward, thereby lockingthe barrel firmly at the breech.Inherent accuracy in Browning designautomatics depends largely on how well,While an occasional jam may be toleratedin a bullseye paper-puncher, hang-upsmust be eliminated from weapons used forserious purposes.In recent years, Colt has tried to improvethe Government Model and GoldCup by offering a collet style barrel bushingthat wedges to the slide and barrel asthey go into battery. By eliminating playbetween those parts at the muzzle, averageaccuracy has improved to a point at whichit is more than acceptable for military/police/combat sidearms. But if nothing isdone at the chamber end, and the barrelcan float at the breech, any advantage atthe muzzle may be negated. The acceptedtechnique to correct this is to weld up andfit the lug on the bottom of the barrel so theslide stop pin will cam it upward, or use a"long link" with greater hole spacing toachieve the same end. An ingenious alternative,which Sarony uses, is to applypressure to the slanted front of the barrellink lug from a horizontal plane throughthe recoil spring guide, and thus force thebarrel up. But, as a practical matter, thistravel is limited by the length of the link. Ichecked this out in an old loose-as-a-gooseG I gun. First, I assembled it with thePerfector and a barrel, minus the link.
