In this role he covers industries fromthe Nuclear Sector to Construction sites,<strong>and</strong> workplaces from chemical plantsto casinos.Prior to joining GMB, Dan worked for the<strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> Executive for 8 years.He spent his first five years working in thefield in the London <strong>and</strong> South East regions.He then spent two years working as apolicymaker within the Worker InvolvementProgramme, where he had oversight of theWorkers’ <strong>Safety</strong> Advisor Challenge Fund,developed HSE’s Workers’ WebPages,<strong>and</strong> wrote the operational guidance forHSE Inspectors on worker involvement.Dan subsequently moved into a rolemaking operational policy in the UtilitiesSector, where he was responsible for theoversight of investigations into domesticgas fatalities; Inspector training on gassafety; <strong>and</strong> monitoring of electrical fatalities.He has been a trade union activist for morethan a decade <strong>and</strong> a <strong>Safety</strong> Representativesince 2000. His particular roleincludes the enforcement of thesafety aspects of the Electricity <strong>Safety</strong>,Quality <strong>and</strong> Continuity Regulations 2002,as amended (“ESQCR”) as well asenforcement of the Electricity at WorkRegulations 1989 <strong>and</strong> other legislationmade under the <strong>Health</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Safety</strong> atWork etc Act 1974. Before becoming aregulator, John held various posts in theelectricity supply industry over a periodof 26 years including all aspects (policy<strong>and</strong> delivery) of operations, control,design, construction, installation<strong>and</strong> maintenance of all power systemequipment up to <strong>and</strong> including132,000 Volts.John has published over 14 papers in IETconferences <strong>and</strong> colloquia on the followingsubjects: reliability, safety management,asset management, condition monitoring,maintenance <strong>and</strong> the role of insulating oil.He has also published on the lifemanagement of electrical equipment.John is currently advising on the electricityindustry’s Powering Improvement assetmanagement <strong>and</strong> safety strategy for 2012.Dr Branka Subotic CEng PhDMSc MengNational Air Traffic ServicesBranka has over 11 years experience inthe field of aviation, including consultancy,research, regulatory, <strong>and</strong> academicexperience. As a principal human factorsspecialist with NATS, Branka managedthe Human Factors Work Package forthe iFACTS project (introducing a suiteof electronic controller tools in theSwanwick London Area Control Centre).She introduced training effectivenessmethodology, mode-switching policy<strong>and</strong> was instrumental in iFACTS systemvalidation.
