DevelopingCountriesProgramDeveloping countries across the Asia-PacificRegion have limited mental health training for primarycare providers, resulting in mood disorders beinglargely undiagnosed and untreated.To help alleviate the problem, a DevelopingCountries Program was initiated in which the BlackDog Institute was able to share its expertise with seniorhealth clinicians from these countries.In 2008 the first group of 14 health professionals,from Sri Lanka, Fiji, Papua New Guinea andSolomon Islands, came to Sydney for an intensivetraining program.The program has continued on a regular basisand in 2012 a group of 11 clinicians, from Fiji, Samoa,Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga and the Maldives,brought the total to nearly 50 participants who havereceived training.According to Associate Professor Vijaya Manicavasagar,the Black Dog Institute Project Director, theprogram is helping build capacity amongst local personnelby providing education about evidence-basedhigh quality treatments for mood disorders and bytraining participants to train other health professionals.Our thanks are extended to The Chris MolnerBequest, AusAid, the Ministries of Health in PacificIsland countries and the World Health OrganisationPacific Islands Mental Health Network (WHO PIMHnet)for their support.46
EXERCISE YOUR MOODAs part of the campaign to raise awareness for the Exercise your Mood in 2012, the Black DogInstitute was represented in two of the world’s iconic open water relay swims.On 21 July, a team travelled to Lake Tahoe in California to compete in the Trans Tahoe Relayswim run by the Olympic Club. The team consisted of Alexander Studzinski, Joey Pedraza, Peter Thiel,Codie Grimsey, Trent Grimsey, and Ridge Grimsey. The race attracted 183 teams this year. The Blackdogteam led the race from the start, and won in the record time of 3 hours 11 minutes.On 1 September, two teams competed in the Maui Channel Swim. The first team consisted ofCodie Grimsey, Ridge Grimsey, Alexander Studzinski, Xavier Desharnais, Rhys Mainstone and Peter Thiel.This Black Dog team again led the race from the start to finish first in the record time of 2 hours 47minutes.The second team (pictured left to right) of Luke Morgan, Shelly Clarke, Millie Joseph, ElizabethSloane, Lachlan Benson and Peter Joseph also managed to finish the gruelling race.BLACK DOG 201247
