SpecialAcknowledgementsChristine BoydFew people contributed as much as ChristineBoyd to the growth of the Black Dog Institute.Christine resigned in September this yearafter spending a quarter of a century working in themental health field, including the past 11 years atthe Black Dog Institute as Facilities Manager.Her career started in January 1987 at theMood Disorders Unit (the Institute’s predecessor) atPrince Henry Hospital. From typewriters to computers,there wouldn’t have been too many peopleat the Unit and the Institute, who didn’t receive ahelping hand from Christine as new technologyentered our lives.It was also her influence over the yearsthat shaped the way visitors to the Institute weregreeted in such a friendly and professional mannerin reception and at the clinic.While we will miss her guidance and wisdomand administrative capacity, all our best wishesgo out to her as she resets her compass to newendeavours.62
Vicki MillerVicki spent nearly four years as the CorporateRelations and Development Manager in a rolethat inspired so many people to generously supportthe work of the Black Dog Institute.Her energetic drive was responsible forbroadening the Institute’s fundraising programs aswell as building relationships and partnerships withour donors.Vicki believed the most humbling experiencehad been dealing with families who had lostsomeone to suicide and come to the Institute toraise money to help make a difference.Being a southern highlander and travellingto the Black Dog Institute to the city from Bowralcan be an arduous daily grind, and after makingsuch a valuable contribution, Vicki has decided tofind new challenges closer to home.Vicki leaves us with her heartfelt message:‘I have enjoyed working with so many passionateand inspiring people at the Institute and will alwaysconsider my time there as the highlight of mycareer.’David Gilfillan and Liz SheppardDavid’s principal role was to develop thepsychological clinical services offered by the BlackDog Institute.He joined the Institute in 2006 and a yearlater he became the first psychologist to work inthe Depression Clinic. At first this involved individualwork but later expanded to include bipolardisorder wellbeing groups which proved remarkablysuccessful.In addition, over the past few years David,as a senior clinical psychologist, has also facilitatedtraining programs for psychologists and healthworkers as well as being involved in other generaltraining programs undertaken by the Institute.David has stepped down from his full-timerole at the Institute but will continue to be associatedwith the delivery of the Institute’s professionaleducation and training initiatives.Liz Sheppard, another outstanding clinicalpsychologist, has strongly supported David overthe past couple of years. Liz has resigned her fulltimeposition but, like David, is expected to undertakeother part-time work for the Institute in 2013.Both wished to acknowledge that a highlightof their time at the Black Dog Institute was the opportunityto work with leading professionals in themood disorders field, and to interact with clientsfrom whom they have learnt much.BLACK DOG 201263
