DeAnza scored46 to AVC's 50 (low score w<strong>in</strong>s) despite a 2-3-4 f<strong>in</strong>ish by Emma Ramirez (5-4, SO,Palmdale (Pete Knight ’11)), Monica Vasquez (5-0, SO, Lancaster (Lancaster ’11)) andCynthia Guzman, 5-3, FR, Lancaster (Lancaster ’12)) respectively.Sat., Sept. 1 <strong>Marauder</strong> w<strong>in</strong> first open<strong>in</strong>g game s<strong>in</strong>ce 2007 and first at San Bernard<strong>in</strong>o s<strong>in</strong>ce 1990,beat<strong>in</strong>g the Wolver<strong>in</strong>es 33-20. After all, there were over 1100 yards of totaloffense, 18 touchdowns and 123 po<strong>in</strong>ts. All much bigger numbers. But it was that onethat counted as the Cougars' second blocked PAT of the game - after the <strong>Marauder</strong> hadscored <strong>in</strong> the second overtime - gave Canyons their sixth straight w<strong>in</strong> over AVC - and the<strong>Marauder</strong>s' first of the season, 62-61.The state's No. 11 (AVC) and 12 offenses didn't disappo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> the end, comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for1090 yards of offense, but it was the <strong>Marauder</strong> Football defense that stole the show,hold<strong>in</strong>g the West LA offense <strong>in</strong>side the five twice and scor<strong>in</strong>g on an <strong>in</strong>terception return,hold<strong>in</strong>g on for a 45-23 w<strong>in</strong>.<strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Cross Country repeats as Foothill Conference Champions, mark<strong>in</strong>gtheir seventh and possibly last Foothill title.It was the first back-to-back titles for the<strong>Marauder</strong>s s<strong>in</strong>ce 1995 and 1996, and the thirdtime AVC has bee able to get two <strong>in</strong> a row.Emma Ramirez also became the third<strong>Marauder</strong> to w<strong>in</strong> back-to-back <strong>in</strong>dividualRamerizconference titles, follow<strong>in</strong>g Melissa Olmos <strong>in</strong> 2006 and2007 as well as Jean Harvey <strong>in</strong> 1990 and 1991. <strong>Marauder</strong>coach Mark Covert was named Foothill ConferenceWomen's Cross Country Coach of the <strong>Year</strong>.It was officially announced that <strong>Marauder</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> would move from FoothillConference to Western State Conference on July 1, 20<strong>13</strong>.<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball opens the season with an 81-67 w<strong>in</strong> over Moorpark <strong>in</strong> theVentura Tournament.<strong>Marauder</strong> Soccer end the season with a 1-0 loss at Mt. Derrick Dison, was 11 for 24on the night for 183 yards, threw two touchdown passes, which tied him for careerTD throws with 32 with Cory Allred who threw that amount <strong>in</strong> 2000 and 2001. The<strong>Marauder</strong>s end 7-3 overall, 5-2 and third <strong>in</strong> the American Pacific.Several tournament streaks came to an end as Ventura beat <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball87-74. It was the first time a host team had beaten AVC <strong>in</strong> 10 tries and the first time <strong>in</strong>six games AVC lost to the host <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>als.


Wed., Nov. 14<strong>Marauder</strong> Volleyball w<strong>in</strong>s 11th straight with 3-1 over Chaffey and second straightFoothill Conference title <strong>in</strong> Jane Cwayna's last regular season match.<strong>Marauder</strong> Soccer’s Morgan Jones and Megan Ferrell were named first team All-FoothillConference. For Jones, it is a step up from last season when shewas second team. <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball w<strong>in</strong>s their home opener beat<strong>in</strong>g LA <strong>Valley</strong> 91-58. JuliusBilbrew scored 18 po<strong>in</strong>ts. The <strong>Marauder</strong>s extended their 42-34 halftime lead with a 58percent shoot<strong>in</strong>g performance <strong>in</strong> the second and held the Monarchs to just 32 percent.Wed., Nov. 20Thu., Nov. 21Thu., Nov. 29Fri., Nov. 30Sat., Dec. 1<strong>Marauder</strong> Volleyball ended their season with a 25-7, 25-17, 25-21 playoff loss at No.3 Golden West to f<strong>in</strong>ish 17-6, <strong>13</strong>-1 and champions of the Foothill Confernce. The<strong>Marauder</strong>s led 10-8 <strong>in</strong> the second set, but Golden West pushed back with 11 straightpo<strong>in</strong>ts. In the f<strong>in</strong>al set, AVC was up 21-20 when the Rustlers started to overpower the<strong>Marauder</strong> blockers and went on for the w<strong>in</strong>. Kristal Campos recorded seven kills on thenight, while Allyson Lods upped her record break<strong>in</strong>g dig total with 17.Jane Cwayna ends her coach<strong>in</strong>g career with the <strong>Marauder</strong>s after 32 years and 316-249overall <strong>in</strong> those years.In what has become an annual tradition, <strong>Marauder</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> gave back to the communityit serves by donat<strong>in</strong>g meat to the AV Community Shelter.Each year Interim Vice President of Student Services andAthletic Director Newton Chelette collects money fromfaculty and staff of the K<strong>in</strong>esiology, <strong>Athletics</strong> and DanceDivision (and more recently Visual and Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts)- which he then matches, then buys animals at the AVFair livestock auction. The animals are then preparedand f<strong>in</strong>ally delivered to the shelter. This year's meat<strong>in</strong>cluded pork and lamb.<strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball loses <strong>in</strong> overtime to still undefeated Santa Rosa 64-59 <strong>in</strong>the open<strong>in</strong>g round of the Sequoias Tournament.It has been 17 years s<strong>in</strong>ce a team has been able to defend their Gregg Anderson MemorialTournament title, and it will be another year before anyone else can try. The No. 9 <strong>in</strong>state <strong>Marauder</strong> Men’s Basketball couldn't conta<strong>in</strong> the quickness of the No. 6 Pierceand couldn't hit the three when necessary, los<strong>in</strong>g 70-63. Daviyon Draper scored 15 forthe <strong>Marauder</strong>s, hitt<strong>in</strong>g two of the <strong>Marauder</strong>s four threes. AVC was four for 14 from threeon the night.For the first time <strong>in</strong> nearly a quarter century the <strong>Marauder</strong>s would be watch<strong>in</strong>g the gameson the f<strong>in</strong>al day of the Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament rather than play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it.With a MiraCosta 64-62 w<strong>in</strong>, last year champion <strong>Marauder</strong>s are out. It is also the firsttime s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005 that AVC was bounced from any tournament <strong>in</strong> two games.<strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball end their trip to the Sequoias Tournament with a 58-51loss to Riverside. Mikeisha Moore scored 20 po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> the loss.Wed., Dec. 5Fri., Dec. 7<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball ends two game los<strong>in</strong>g streak, beat<strong>in</strong>g previously undefeatedand Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament Champions Ventura 67-54 <strong>in</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g roundof the Riverside Tournament.<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball took another half-time lead, only to lose the game by eightas they exited the Riverside Tournament with a 72-64 loss to Mt. San Jac<strong>in</strong>to. The<strong>Marauder</strong>s led 37-30 at the half, then shot just 29 percent <strong>in</strong> the second half as the Eagleshit 52 percent of their shots to move past AVC.

Mikeisha Moore led AVC with 14 po<strong>in</strong>ts, whilethe All-Tournament players, Yvette Bennett and Ashley Davis added 10 and n<strong>in</strong>e po<strong>in</strong>tsrespectively.Five times from 3:50 left <strong>in</strong> the game- twice for <strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball and threetimes for Santa Barbara - players went to the free throw l<strong>in</strong>e on the bonus with the gametied at 49. Five times those first shots were missed. But it was Sara Crane pick<strong>in</strong>g up theoffensive rebound with 1:35 left and putt<strong>in</strong>g it back to break the tie that ultimately gavethe w<strong>in</strong> to the Vaqueros <strong>in</strong> the open<strong>in</strong>g round of the AVC Holiday Tounament. AshleyDavis scored 11 to lead AVC.Los<strong>in</strong>g effort is not supposed to mean what is happen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Marauder</strong> Women'sBasketball. Yes, Pierce beat AVC 73-61 for AVC Holiday Tournament Consolation title,but it was the loss of Yvette Bennett <strong>in</strong> the second half with a knee <strong>in</strong>jury that added tothe loss of Whitney Wash<strong>in</strong>gton (<strong>in</strong>jury) and Ashley Davis (discipl<strong>in</strong>e) that rendered AVCdown three of its starters they opened the tournament with.<strong>Marauder</strong> Football's Edw<strong>in</strong> Delva named All-America. Additionally, he signs withOregon State.<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball beats Cerritos 62-59 <strong>in</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g round of the CanyonsTournament. Michaelyn Scott led AVC with 18 po<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a shot with 19 secondsleft that gave AVC the 61-59 lead. Also <strong>in</strong> the game, John Taylor picks up this 50th w<strong>in</strong> asmen's head coach.Sat., Dec. 29 <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball defended their title <strong>in</strong> the Canyons Tournament with a 85-83 w<strong>in</strong> over No. 8 <strong>in</strong> state Chaffey. The w<strong>in</strong> gives AVC their only championship of theseason - they lost to Ventura <strong>in</strong> the championship game of the Ventura Tournament - andmomentum go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to Foothill Conference play.Down by 11 to the Panthers 67-56 with <strong>13</strong>:11 left, the <strong>Marauder</strong>s scraped back, and withthe help of a defense that kept Chaffey from scor<strong>in</strong>g a field goal <strong>in</strong> the last 4:54, tooktheir first lead of the contest when Vadal Faniel put back a Julius Bilbrew miss with am<strong>in</strong>ute left <strong>in</strong> the contest - 83-82.Sat., Jan 5<strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball shook off a three game los<strong>in</strong>g skid and opened FoothillConference play with a 88-81 w<strong>in</strong> over Desert.<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball recorded their fourth straight w<strong>in</strong>, open<strong>in</strong>g FoothillConference play with their biggest w<strong>in</strong> of the season, beat<strong>in</strong>g Desert 88-52. Five<strong>Marauder</strong>s were <strong>in</strong> double figures, with Lucciano Gamiz and Daviyon Draper hitt<strong>in</strong>g for14 each.


Sat., Jan. 12<strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball saw a huge opportunity. Chaffey was com<strong>in</strong>g off a hugeupset of San Bernard<strong>in</strong>o, and the <strong>Marauder</strong>s knew the Panthers night well be flat. Well,Chaffey wasn't exactly flat, but AVC gave them as difficult game as on Wednesday,ultimately los<strong>in</strong>g their first Foothill Conference contest 72-67. Chaffey jumped out toa 10 po<strong>in</strong>t lead with seven m<strong>in</strong>utes left <strong>in</strong> the first half, but by the half, AVC was downby just two. And with 2:32 left, the <strong>Marauder</strong>s tied the game when Tyreshay Flores wasfouled on a lay-up, giv<strong>in</strong>g her 18 po<strong>in</strong>ts. She also led AVC with 10 rebounds. But it wasthe last po<strong>in</strong>ts the <strong>Marauder</strong>s would get . Yvette Bennett led AVC with 20 po<strong>in</strong>ts.No. 11 <strong>in</strong> state <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball came <strong>in</strong>to their home Foothill Conferencegame aga<strong>in</strong>st No. 12 Chaffey, which AVC beat <strong>in</strong> the last seconds of the game just threeweeks ago <strong>in</strong> the championship game of the Canyons Tournament, know<strong>in</strong>g that thiswill set the stage for rest of the conference season. After all, the <strong>Marauder</strong>s 85-70 w<strong>in</strong>gives AVC sole possession of first <strong>in</strong> conference and they are the only undefeated teamamongst the four team that are ranked <strong>in</strong> the top 20 <strong>in</strong> the state. What was the difference<strong>in</strong> this one? Shoot<strong>in</strong>g, Pure and simple. The <strong>Marauder</strong>s shot 56 percent from beh<strong>in</strong>d thearc, led by Julius Bilbrew's five out of six. The Panthers, on the other hand was just 20percent, and was at one po<strong>in</strong>t one for 16 <strong>in</strong> the second half. AVC was 62 percent from thefield, compared to the 36 percent for the Panthers - a full n<strong>in</strong>e po<strong>in</strong>ts below their average.Wed., Jan. 23Mikeisha Moore hit for 14 po<strong>in</strong>ts and had five rebounds but it wasn't nearly enoughaga<strong>in</strong>st the No. 5 team <strong>in</strong> the state and <strong>Marauder</strong> Women's Basketball lost 69-44.No. 4 <strong>in</strong> state <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball had all the chances to break a bad streak andkeep a good one go<strong>in</strong>g. But they couldn't get any of the chances to drop as they took afive po<strong>in</strong>t lead at the 11:08 mark <strong>in</strong> the second and then went three for 14 the rest of theway (and 23 percent from the field <strong>in</strong> the second half), los<strong>in</strong>g to San Bernard<strong>in</strong>o <strong>Valley</strong>57-53. The loss gives the Wolver<strong>in</strong>es their n<strong>in</strong>th straight over AVC, it snaps a n<strong>in</strong>e gamew<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g streak by the <strong>Marauder</strong>s.Sat., Jan. 26Tue., Jan. 29Fri., Feb. 1Sat., Feb. 2No. 4 <strong>in</strong> state <strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball shakes off loss to San Bernard<strong>in</strong>o <strong>Valley</strong> andbeats No. <strong>13</strong> <strong>in</strong> soCal Mt. San Jac<strong>in</strong>to on the road, 60-57.<strong>Marauder</strong> Fastpitch/Softball f<strong>in</strong>ally opens the season, but loses 4-3 at Cerritos.<strong>Marauder</strong> Fastpitch/Softball comes back from a 6-0 fifth <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g deficit to beat Fullerton8-6 <strong>in</strong> first game of doubleheader. In the bottom of the fifth, AVC closed the gap to 6-3,then <strong>in</strong> the sixth thanks to walks and wild pitches by the Hornet pitchers, they servedup the biggest mistake of the game, lett<strong>in</strong>g Amanda Sanchez drive a shot over the rightcenter field fence scor<strong>in</strong>g the three runs that gave the <strong>Marauder</strong>s their first lead and thew<strong>in</strong>.<strong>Marauder</strong> Baseball opener became a 2-park, 23-hour odyssey after their game aga<strong>in</strong>stPasadena was halted due to darkness <strong>in</strong> Pasadena the day before with the game tied at 3-3<strong>in</strong> the 10th <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. The game then resumed Saturday with the <strong>Marauder</strong>s w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g 4-3,<strong>in</strong> 11 <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs. San Jac<strong>in</strong>to that could, could just put them <strong>in</strong> the playoffs, butended up los<strong>in</strong>g 58-52. After AVC tied the game with two m<strong>in</strong>utes left, T<strong>in</strong>a Fantroy hither only three <strong>in</strong> <strong>13</strong> attempts with 1:15 left that all but iced the game. Tyreshay Floresscored 14 to lead AVC, who missed four unchallenged layups <strong>in</strong> the second half.<strong>Marauder</strong> Men's Basketball needed to respond to the loss at San Bernard<strong>in</strong>o <strong>Valley</strong> thatkept them from w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the Foothill Conference title, and they had to do so aga<strong>in</strong>st a Mt.San Jac<strong>in</strong>to team that was fight<strong>in</strong>g hard for a good seed<strong>in</strong>g after a horrible conferenceseason. At the plate, eight <strong>Marauder</strong>s had at least one hit, with Ryan Marshall hitt<strong>in</strong>g a tripleand had four RBI on the day.<strong>Marauder</strong> Track and Field competed <strong>in</strong> the Western State Conference championships.The women f<strong>in</strong>ished eighth with 32 po<strong>in</strong>ts and the men n<strong>in</strong>th with 42.3.The <strong>Marauder</strong>s had no <strong>in</strong>dividual titlists, but three were on the podium - Patrick Lark<strong>in</strong>and Eric Bravo who were second and third, respectively, <strong>in</strong> the hammer, Dest<strong>in</strong>y Wilsonwho was second the 400 hurdles, and the women's 4x400 relay team which was third.Mon., Apr. 29Tue., Apr. 30Sat., May 11Charles Johnson, who played football at AVC <strong>in</strong> the 2008 season, was the seventh draftpick by the Green Bay Packers, mark<strong>in</strong>g the first <strong>Marauder</strong> to be drafted who had playedunder head coach Perry Jehlicka.Johnson, who was the 216th pick <strong>in</strong> this year’s draft, played for the <strong>Marauder</strong> team thatwon the American Pacific championship and played <strong>in</strong> the Western State Bowl aga<strong>in</strong>stCanyons.It was <strong>in</strong> that bowl game that Johnson had his best day as a <strong>Marauder</strong>, receiv<strong>in</strong>g eightpasses for 121 yards and a TD.At AVC <strong>in</strong> 2008, he was their lead<strong>in</strong>g receiver with 30 catches for 352 yards and fourTDs, was fourth <strong>in</strong> scor<strong>in</strong>g and was named second team All-American Pacific Division.He moved on to Grand <strong>Valley</strong> State, where he led the Lakers <strong>in</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g, with a two yeartotal of 128 receptions for 2229 yards and 31 TDs.<strong>Marauder</strong> Baseball placed four players on the All-Foothill Conference teams, two on firstand two on second.Mak<strong>in</strong>g the first team were outfielder Aaron Owen, who led AVC <strong>in</strong> batt<strong>in</strong>g with a .389average as well as slugg<strong>in</strong>g percentage, and <strong>in</strong>fielder Dylan Lohman who was third <strong>in</strong>hitt<strong>in</strong>g and led AVC <strong>in</strong> RBI.On the second team was Andrew Rabiej whose six w<strong>in</strong>s and 71.1 <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g pitched led AVCand his 3.79 ERA was second, as well as Sho Serrano who was second <strong>in</strong> hitt<strong>in</strong>g for AVC.<strong>Marauder</strong> Track and Field's Emma Ramirez ran 4:46.44 to f<strong>in</strong>ish third <strong>in</strong> the SoCalregionals and qualify for the state meet. It marks the 24th straight year a <strong>Marauder</strong> willbe compet<strong>in</strong>g for the State title and the 32nd straight time a Mark Covert coached athletewill compete <strong>in</strong> state.


Sat., May 19Fri., July 19Tue., July 23<strong>Marauder</strong> Track and Field's Emma Ramirez, AVC's lone representative <strong>in</strong> at the StateChampionships, f<strong>in</strong>ished third <strong>in</strong> the 1500 meters with a time of 4:43.67.Her f<strong>in</strong>ish means she was All-America, and it is the fourth time - twice <strong>in</strong> cross-countryand last year <strong>in</strong> the 1500 when she was eighth - that she has earned that honor.Only two other <strong>Marauder</strong>s have been All-America four times - Jean Harvey <strong>in</strong> 1990-91and Mark S<strong>in</strong>derson <strong>in</strong> 1993-94.Mark Cruz, who has been a <strong>Marauder</strong> assistant coach the last five seasons, has beennamed as Jane Cwayna's replacement as Head Volleyball Coach, it wasannounced by <strong>Marauder</strong> Athletic Director Newton Chelette.Cruz takes over the helm after the <strong>Marauder</strong>s' first, and until last season, onlyvolleyball coach retired after 32 years and 314 w<strong>in</strong>s.He is <strong>in</strong>herit<strong>in</strong>g a club that is head<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the Western State South after Cruzw<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g three of the last four Foothill Conference titles. Covert quipped that the149,652nd mile "wasn't the quickest one of the Streak."After the run, Covert spoke to the group, thank<strong>in</strong>g first and foremost his wife Debi andhis family.
