Technicalsessions will begin on the 4th Octoberand will continue until the I1th. The elosingplenary session is scheduled for Monday the12th October. Films on various aspects ofmechanical harvesting and the transport ofsugar cane have been obtained from severalsugar countries, and an exhibition featuringbasic recent agricultural and manufacturinginformation on participating countries will beheld during the Congress.2. Meetings. In addition to meetings ofthe Research Advisory Committee which wereheld on three occasions, the following lectureswere given in the Boname Hall :26th January, <strong>1961</strong> - «La lutte contre la maladiedu rabougrissement desrepousscs» by Mr. RobertAntoinc. The lecturewas repeated at BelleRive under the auspices ofthe M.S.P.A. on 12th May.28th April, <strong>1961</strong> - «Les applications deI'energie atomique al'agriculturc» by Mr. P.Pelegrin, Head of Sectionof Applied Agronomy,Nuclear Research Centreat Saclay.23rd May, <strong>1961</strong> - Review of M.S.I.R.I.<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> for 1960;an account, by the Director.of the work carriedout by the Institute in1960.30th May, <strong>1961</strong> -- Review of the work carriedout by the Sugar TechnologySection of M.S.I.R.I.in 1960, by J. D. de R. deSt. Antoine.12th July, <strong>1961</strong> - «The growth of a volcanoin the South Pacific andthe development of itsvegetation» by Mr. HaroldSt. John, Emeritus Professorof Botany in theUniversity of Hawaii. givenunder the auspices of theRoyal Society of Arts andand Sciences, Mauritius.3. College of Agriculture. Courses oflectures of the College of Agriculture continuedaccording to arrangements made last year,namely in Sugar Technology, Plant Pathology,Botany of the Sugar Cane, Statistics and FieldExperimentation and Sugar Cane cultivation.4. Staff Movements. The following officerswent on overseas leave during the year,Messrs. Antoinc, Bcchct, de Frobervillc, Mayer,Parish, Rochecouste and Rouillard. Arrangementswere made for these officers to visit agriculturaland other research centres engaged in workof particular interest to them. The assistancereceived from the authorities concerned is gratefullyacknowlcdgcd.Mr. Antoine spent two weeks in Madagascarin February and again in Novemberwhen he was accompained by the Director inconnection with the control of Fiji disease onthe east coast of Madagascar.Mr. S. Feillafe spent a week in Reunion inconnection with soil studies.The Director was absent from the end ofAugust to early October visiting the ChagosIslands and the Seychelles.The assistance given by sugar estatemanagers and their personnel has been asusual of the greatest value and it is a verypleasant duty to record my own appreciationand that of the staff for the help received in theexecution of field and factory experiments.Finally, I should like to thank all members ofthe Stafffor theirloyal co-operation during the year.!~Director9th February, 1962.
