COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF UROX, ATRATONE AND DCMU.The herbicides Urox (3(p-chlorophenyl)l,l-dimethylurea trichloroacetate), Atratone(2 - ethyl- amino - 4 - isopropylamino - 6 - methoxy1,3,5 - triazine) and DCMU (N - (3, 4 - dichlorophenyl)W.N! - dimethyl urea) were evaluatedin pre-ernergence application at Belle Rive andUnion Park of the superhumid zone. Theywere applied at the rates of 2.4 and4.0 lb of active material per arpent just afterplanting and before weed emergence. Plotsize was 1/150 arpent and the treatments wererandomized with fourfold replications. Thecane cuttings of the variety Ebene 1/37 wereused and observations on cane germination andgrowth were made at regular intervals. Weedassessment was made by the frequency-abundancemethod 3 months after herbicide application.ResultsNo effect on cane germination was observedin all treatments and the chemicals did notapparently afTect cane growth. In both trialsDCMU proved more effective than Urox andAtratone at equivalent dosage rates of applications(table 22). On the other hand Urox andAtratone gave very comparable results. CULTIVATION, IRRIGATION, CLIMATE1. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SPRAY IRRIGATION AND SURFACEIRRIGATION ON GRAVELLY & FREE SOILSG. MAZERYTH IS experiment was initiated in 1957*,the required funds being provided at theearlier stages by Government and bythe Sugar Industry Reserve Fund. The sitefor the experiment was selected at Palmyre byarrangement with Medine S. E.The main object of the experiment was tocompare, under dry conditions, the merits ofoverheadand surface irrigation methods on latosolicreddish prairie - «gravelly soils»-and low humiclatosol - «free soils» - from the agronomicand economic standpoints and to determine therelative advantages of the fully portable and thesemi-permanent spraying systems.The original plan comprised an area ofabout 56 arpents in gravelly soils and 65arpents in free soils. Subsequently. however,it was found necessary to curtail these figuresto 47 arpents and 36 arpents respectively. Thischange in the experimental layout was madenecessary owing to the impossibility for thelimited spraying equipment available to copewith the work during the drier periods whenwater supply proved inadequate and longworking hours impracticable.Irrigation was started with the fully portableequipment in March 1958 on the gravellysoils and the semi-permanent installation threemonths later on the free soils.Frequency of irrigation depended on soilhumidity as determined by plaster of Paris cells.Sprayed plots received 2.5 inches of waterper irrigation. Surface irrigated plots receivedvarying amounts depending on soil types.During the course of the experiment, datawere collected 011 ~\ utcr co.is.nnption and costof the different systems of irrigation and, inaddition, meteorologic.•1 observations and growthmeasurements were recorded.I. Growth AspectsExploratory work in 1959 having shownthat optimum growth was obtained with spraysof about 2.5 inches of water per irrigation,this regime was maintained subsequently throughoutthe duration of the experiments.It will be observed (fig. 23) that on gravellysoils, spray irrigation has produced bettercane growth than surface irrigation. On freesoils, on the other hand, both methods ofirrigation were comparable (fig. 24).In general, surface irrigation and sprayirrigation had the same effect on cane yieldsas indicated by figures given in Table 23.• For a description of this experiment and equipment ,used, see AIlIl.
