beginning readers by providing fun and exciting stories at<br />

The first level features short texts with lots of pictures that<br />
provide clues to the story's meaning. These books are<br />

CONTENT<br />
Ole Olsen wants to become a pirate. He dreams of long<br />
journeys and and a treasure island in the middle of the<br />
ocean. While walking on the beach with his dog Wuff, Ole<br />
finds a sailing boat in a secluded cove, the "Bride of the<br />
Wind". The ship seems to be empty and deserted. Ole and<br />
Wuff swim to the boat, climb aboard and look around. They<br />
discover a rolled up flag bearing the skull and crossbones<br />
and are sure: they are on a pirate ship! Just at that moment,<br />
the crew returns. Ole and Wuff hide in the galley, and<br />
without meaning to, become stowaways. They don't leave<br />
their hiding place until the ship is attacked by another band<br />
of pirates. The attackers think Wuff is a monster and flee in<br />
panic. In gratitude for saving them, Ole and Wuff are made<br />
part of the crew. Then the "Bride of the Wind" heads for an<br />
island where the pirates search for treasure. But the<br />
navigator steals away with the map of the island during the<br />

night, intending to keep the treasure for himself. Wuff takes<br />
up his scent and the runaway navigator is captured. Ole<br />
takes charge of the hunt for treasure, and in the end the<br />
treasure is recovered.<br />
THE AUTHOR<br />
Ingrid Uebe was born and raised in Essen, and now lives in<br />
Cologne, Germany with her husband, daughter and son.<br />
Since 1977 she has written numerous books for children<br />
and adolescents, many of which have won diverse prizes.<br />
She is one of the best-known and most successful authors<br />
of books for beginning readers, including series of books<br />
that have sold hundreds of thousands of copies.<br />
THE ILLUSTRATOR<br />
Betina Gotzen-Beck was born in Mönchengladbach in 1965.<br />
After she completed school, she traveled throughout all of<br />
Europe prior to beginning her studies in painting and<br />
graphic design at Freiburg University. She has worked as a<br />
freelance children's book illustrator since 1996. Betina<br />
Gotzen-Beek lives with her family in Freiburg.
