A varied collection of the best winter search-and-find
pictures of Ali Mitgutsch.
CONTENT
This book brings together the best winter scenes by
illustrator Ali Mitgutsch. All the pictures come from one of
his original search-and-find books and show a wide array of
scenes. In a city park, children are sledding and playing,
while a village covered with deep snow suggests what life
used to be like in the countryside. The collection also
includes a pony farm, the busy comings and goings around
a ski lift in the mountains as well as a bustling winter scene
at a frozen pond with people ice skating and playing hockey.
Five of the seven large pictures are complemented by
humorous, free-standing scenes and objects that invite
children to observe and tell stories.
THE ILLUSTRATOR
Ali Mitgutsch was born in 1935 in Munich. During the
course of a very tedious lithography internship he decided
to become a freelance graphic artist. He did then, in fact,
study graphic arts and make his dream reality. Mitgutsch is
married and has three children, and divides his time
between the town of Schwabing and an old farmhouse in
Bavaria. He draws inspiration for his illustrations from his
extensive international travels. In 2003 he was awarded the
prestigious Schwabinger Kunstpreis (Swabian Art Prize).
Companion picture book to the bestselling "Nighty Night"
app.
CONTENT
Everywhere people are climbing into their beds and
sleeping, but on the farm the animals are still awake. Before
the cow, the sheep, the pig, the duck and the chickens can
go to sleep, too, they need your child's help. By folding the
large pages, one animal after the other is settled into its
resting place on the farm. Where light still burns at first, it is
dark now and all are sleeping peacefully. On the last page
everyone is in their bed except the child.
Narration that directly addresses the child and repetition of
turning out the lights in the book makes it an innovative
and appealing companion for the daily going-to-bed ritual,
encouraging children to sleep tight and have sweet dreams.
THE ILLUSTRATOR
Heidi Wittlinger works as a freelance designer/illustrator,
animator and animation director in Berlin. Her short films
received numerous awards. Nighty Night is based on her
famous and bestselling bed-time app.
A construction book with sliding doors, flaps, wheels and
cut-outs. Detailed and accurate illustrations all around
construction sites show how diverse the work is that takes
place there. The exciting special effects let children get
involved in the action: with the wheel they can mix cement
and by opening a flap the backhoe lifts rubble, the crane
builds a bridge, and the tracks of the backhoe's digging on
the ground can be felt throught the cut-outs.
The varied effects develop fine motor skills and children's
imagination, while the fun and informative rhymes invite
them to play and explore.
THE AUTHOR
Daniela Prusse was born in Glarus, Switzerland, in 1968.
This dictionary covers the highly popular topics of farm, fire
brigade, construction site, forest and airport.
In the section about farms, for example, children become
familiar with the farmer's family, animals and their babies,
life in the barn and work in the fields. The topic construction
site helps children discover vehicles and tools, and the
various jobs and tasks at a construction site are presented.
The fire brigade pages explain the different kinds of work
firefighters do as well as the vehicles they use. In addition to
a number of rescue operations, the fire stations and garages
are shown. The subject forest includes a wide variety of
animals and plants found there. And the airport pages
depict the many different tasks that take place at an airport.
Only when everything is clean, ready and checked can the
trip begin.
Varied and interestingly designed flaps draw children into
the action, train their fine motor skills, and encourage them
to discover and name terms and situations.
This big book to read aloud creates a fairytale atmosphere
for children. Favorite children's stories by the Brothers
Grimm will make them laugh, dream and be amazed. The
texts have been specially selected with very young children
in mind, the stories newly told and illustrated. Each fairy
tale extends over one or two double pages, making them
ideal as first read-aloud stories.
The following fairy tales are included: Little Red Riding
Hood, Sleeping Beauty, The Magic Porridge Pot, The Hare
and the Hedgehog, Mother Hulda, The Wolf and the Seven
Young Kids, The Star Money, Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog King,
The Bremen City Musicians, Puss in Boots and The Golden
Key.
Susanne Szesny was born in 1965. She studied visual
communication in Münster and received a diploma in
design. After her studies, she worked freelance as an
illustrator of games books, board books and picture books.
In her opinion, a book should transport an inner value (a
message, a teaching) and be a source of inspiration for
children and adults equally. With her pictures she tries to
build a bridge between the emotional worlds of children
and adults.
A book about vehicles with an innovative push-element:
children's actions generate sound.
CONTENT
The tractor drives out onto the field. By turning the wheels,
the sound of a motor can be heard. The street-cleaning
machine drives through town with its brushes rotating and
sweeps the asphalt. Fire sirens wail as the fire truck rushes
to a fire, the barrel of the cement mixer turns and a doctor
flies to his patients with a helicopter
Children can generate the sounds made by all these vehicles
themselves with the built-in sliding elements. Detailed
illustrations and fun rhymes encourage participation.
potential to become a classic.
CONTENT
Günther Goose wants so badly to have a friend. So he sets
off in search of one. First he meets Herbert the hare, and
they decide to continue searching together, because a
search is easier with someone than alone. But how do you
find a friend? Do you have to capture one? Do you meet one
by chance? Or can you buy one in Aunt Emma's store,
maybe? Underway they meet many animals - but all their
attempts to find a friend fall short. The two are just about to
give up and make one last attempt by each hanging an
announcement on a bulletin board. As they read them, they
notice that the friend they have been searching for has been
by their side the whole time: Herbert the hare and Günther
the goose are inseparable from then on.
Funny stories of everyday life clearly demonstrate that good
behavior and being considerate of others are important for
a harmonious life with others.
CONTENT
Pete is actually a perfectly normal boy. But Pete is also a
pirate, or at least he acts like one - singing wild sailors'
songs, being loud, cutting in line, and his imaginary band of
pirates gives him a loud round of applause every time. Pete's
parents are not amused by this. But there is still Grandpa,
who used to be a pirate too, who even understands Pete
when he talks with his mouth full. Pete wishes he had
pirates for parents...
Pete's wish is granted, because the next day his parents are
completely transformed: loud, inconsiderate and only
concerned with themselves. Pete soon notices how
unpleasant it is to live with self-centered pirates who only
think of their own fun. So the family comes up with a Pirate
Day, when everyone can be as wild as they want, because
everyone is in on the fun. Pete's imaginary band of pirates
finds the idea stupid, and grudgingly moves on.
A funny story of changing places by bestselling author
Anette Bley that helps parents and children understand
each other.
CONTENT
Lissi is excited. Because her mother fell from a chair and
can't walk well, she gets to be the big one today and take
care of the household. The best part for Lissi is being in
charge, and she dives into her new role with great
enthusiasm: making breakfast, giving medicine to her
cranky mother and sending her to bed, taking care of her
little brother and letting out the dog.
Lissi has an awful lot to do and hardly finds any time for
having fun, or even to use the bathroom! When Mr. Meier
from next door stops by, too, it's clear to Lissi that she needs
some help... She realizes that being an adult is quite a hard
job. Fortunately, her father comes home then, and just in
time so Lissi can continue taking care of all she has to do.
Even papa is put into action. But that evening, Lissi and her
mother insist on enjoying being the "little ones" together.
A classic by bestselling author Ali Mitgutsch: fantasy
creatures children are thrilled to be enchanted by, funny
and scary rhymes that play with language, and expressive
illustrations.
CONTENT
Deep in the dark forest lives the terrible witch Holla Hulla
Hottala with her frightening lizard, which steals the
humans' fowl every night. Then come the seven snitches,
who steal the witch's magic wand and kidnap the beast.
Naturally the witch won't let them get away with that, so
she mounts her broom to go find the snitches. But without
her magic wand none of her evil spells have any effect, and
even the sinister spirits have no effect on the little snitches.
They finally ride with the bound lizard to the human world,
where they are greeted with cheers. To keep the lizard from
doing any more damage, it is locked in a tower where it
soon turns to stone, and is then placed on the fountain on
the market square. Whenever the children play in the
fountain they ask where the heroic snitches are to be found.
But they are never seen again.
An impressive story about overcoming prejudice toward
foreigners.
CONTENT
In a city there lived a man who wore strange clothes, and no
one knew him. He had a bright red nose, and since no one
could pronounce his foreign name, they just called him
Tomato. All of a sudden, awful things were said about him.
First the children whispered on the playground. Then an
adult picked up on it, and before long the phones were
ringing off the hook at the police station and Tomato was a
suspect for every crime. When he found out about it he fled
from the city and spent the winter in an isolated,
dilapidated house. In the springtime, the police found him.
But they released him again, because in fact, he hadn't done
anything wrong. Instead, he was offered a job in a home for
children, which Tomato happily accepted. Before long, the
children learned to trust him, and no one noticed his red
nose anymore. And then Tomato realized that he was
finally, truly happy.
The bear wants to finally not sleep through Christmas: a
picture book with an entertaining Christmas story and
genuine snoring sounds.
CONTENT
Just once, the bear would very much like to celebrate
Christmas. Unfortunately, he always goes to sleep shortly
before the celebration; after all, it is winter and time for
hibernation. But this year everything will be different. His
friends - the fox, the squirrel, the owl, the mouse and the
rabbit - think up all kinds of silly tricks to rouse their big,
snoring friend from his slumber. But it's no use, the bear
sleeps and snores and just will not wake up. Later, when all
of his friends have fallen asleep in exhaustion one after the
other, something happens that no one expected: the
snoring bear wakes up, and there is a fun Christmas
celebration after all.
This sound book is battery operated, and pressing a button
generates the sound of snoring.
Who were the Romans? Readers of this book are
transported to ancient Rome, where children and grownups
alike are looking forward to a big day of chariot races. Rome
was not only a city, but also an enormous world empire. So
this book begins by following legionaries, or Roman soldiers,
into the provinces and depicts life in their camps. The
Roman military was successful especially due to its fighting
techniques, such as the well-known tortoise formation. Life
in the big city of Rome is vividly portrayed, including a
glimpse into the multistory apartment buildlings and
Christmas Eve with a tree and manger are shown. We
explain why some children wait for the Christ child and
others for Santa Claus, and have a look at how people in
various countries around the world celebrate this holiday.
children learn about a variety of cultural customs.
Using flaps and doors, children can decorate the Christmas
hustle and bustle in a department store, and even take a
peek into the stall in Bethlehem.
Rain, storm or sunshine - young children experience
ABOUT THE SERIES
WWW Junior is a unique invitation to discover the world in
a playful way. The junior series features a compact format
with large, movable flaps for kids thirsty for knowledge.
Centered on who-what-how questions, the titles in this
series take on fascinating subjects. The questions of 2- to 4-
year-olds are to a large extent answered by information
contained in the illustrations, complemented by clear,
friendly texts.
CONTENT
Dogs and cats often live with people in their houses and
apartments. But what about the other animals? This books
presents a wide variety of animal homes: the nests of
finches, storks and swallows, where they hatch their eggs
and raise their young; or the squirrel's drey where it beds
down to sleep. A peek underground shows rabbits, moles
and their young. Readers peek inside a beaver's dam, and
learn that even bees live in houses and sometimes in
hollows of trees. Children will find out that bats might even
live under the roof of their house, too. The snail, on the
other hand, always carries its house with it - and a little
snail is hidden on each two-page spread of the book.
Two friends, Pit and Paula, found a detective agency. It's
called the Parrot Agency for two reasons. Paula says that Pit
always repeats everything she says, just like a parrot. And
secondly, Paula has a thing for incredibly bright, colorful
clothing. Their first case is a kind of warmup; they help a
woman find an earring that her young son had buried in a
sandbox. Pit and Paula's second case is already trickier: at a
child's birthday party they sniff out a mysterious cake thief.
It turns out that the neighbor, whose wife has put him on a
diet, is the culprit. He sheepishly confesses to the children
that he just couldn't resist the delicious cake.
Castle Cadabra, a boarding school for witches, is in an
uproar. The filming of a horror movie there is about to
begin. When the film crew arrives, the young witch Maya
and her human friend Lena are spellbound and follow the
preparations with fascination. But then everything goes
haywire: skeletons and spiders to be used as props come to
life, and spider webs wrap themselves around the camera
crew. Only the director, Oliver Ralocard, remains remarkably
calm, and the two friends come to suspect that they may
not be dealing with a human being. And in fact, in the end it
is revealed that the director is a descendant of the Dracula
dynasty, although he would rather drink cherry juice than
genuine witches, he pulls out all the stops for the filming:
gruesome grimaces, skeletal figures and ghostly wailing.
One day, a young green animal the size of a guinea pig
appears outside the front door to Anna's home. While
everyone discusses what it could possibly be, it simply
strolls inside and hides under the sofa. Anna and her
eats houseplants, carpets and hay, gets into all kinds of
mischief, and becomes a wonderful friend. Only when
people come to visit, Sigi hides, because he is terribly shy.
Hiding gets harder and harder, though, because Sigi is
growing. While Anna and Lollo are still fighting about
whether Sigi is a dragon or a dinosaur, his presence can't be
kept a secret any longer. Sigi is discovered, appears in the
newspaper, and the very next day taken to a zoo. Although
he has a steady supply of carpets and hay there, Sigi doesn't
night comes: Sigi lifts into the air and is a free dragon.
An Easter egg in winter? Anja can't believe her eyes when
she finds the blue egg in the snow. But at home with the
Lukas family, it's not a chick that hatches from the egg, but
a small dragon. The tiny creature prefers to eat lavender ice
instead of spewing fire...
CONTENT
In January, Anja finds a blue egg in the snow at a park: this
egg giggles and changes colors! All of a sudden, a small
white dragon hatches from the egg, and it can even talk!
The Lukas family takes him in and names him Lavundel. And
thus begins a year full of adventures, because it's not
exactly easy to hide a spirited little dragon from the view of
curious neighbors!
Lavundel has an awful lot to learn, such as flying and how to
spout fire, but fortunately Anja and her brothers, Bo and
Alexander, are the world's best dragon trainers. They
organize nightly flying lessons on the old glider airfield and
spend the summer in Turkey, where Lavundel befriends
some dolphins. In autumn, Lavundel sets the most beautiful
apple tree in the neighbors' garden on fire. And at Christmas
the family has no choice but to celebrate Christmas around
a potted palm tree instead of a real Christmas fir. One thing
is for sure: there won't be anything boring about this year
for the Lukas family!
With each season Lavundel changes not only his color, but
also his eating habits, which presents an enormous
challenge for the family. At the end of December, Lavundel
finally has to say goodbye to his new friends, because on
New Year's Eve his dragon family will return to the city park
and pick up Lavundel on their way to Siberia.
The third adventure of the Magical Four beckons: Leo's
archenemy Gregorius has snuck into their school as the
custodion. Without a doubt, he wants to take control of the
fantastic realm of Nirvania again. Leo immediately alerts
his friends. The four want to thwart Gregorius's plans with
ABOUT THE SERIES
A magician who is terrible at casting spells, a dragon that
can read minds, a cheeky half-elf with heroic bravery and a
boy who stumbles into a terrible tangle purely by chance:
This new fantasy series will win you over with its humor,
original ideas and surprising turns. At the heart of every
volume is a detective story that keeps Otto the magician,
Nirvania's top detective, along with his companions, on
their toes. The series launched in Spring 2012 with two
titles, with another volume to be released every six months.
CONTENT
This time Leo was even looking forward to school. The
vacation in the fantasy realm of Nirvania was so sensational
that the thought of boring math lessons actually seemed
appealing. But on the very first day of school Leo meets the
new custodian and he senses that the days ahead will be
anything but calm. The custodian is none other than
Gregorius, Leo's archenemy, who wants to take over control
of Nirvania. Gregorius steals Leo's magic ball, which gives
viewers a way to see what's happening in Nirvania. In
desparation, Leo asks his friends for help - and the respond:
Uncle Otto, Nirvania's last magician. They also have Uncle
Otto's latest invention, a live bugging device the size of a
guinea pig that can hide itself and, among other things, tell
them later what it observed. They want to use it to track
Gregorius and uncover his dastardly plans. Unfortunately, a
few things go awry: the bug turns out to be a disloyal traitor
and befriends Gregorius, Flocky is locked up in the zoo,
Uncle Otto is mistaken for the new chemistry teacher, and
Elfira, as usual, is preoccupied with finding her father, who
joined the human world many years ago. But in the end
everything works out. In a thrilling showdown, the Magical
Four are able to overcome their foe, take back the crystal
ball from him, and for the third time save Nirvania from its
demise.

ABOUT THE SERIES
An exciting crime story takes readers on a trip into the
distant past. The stories in this series are based on an
intriguing event in history or an authentic historical criminal
case. The main characters are Julian and his two friends Kim
and Leon, as well as the cat Kija, who has been traveling to
the past with them since their very first time travel
adventure in ancient Egypt. Kija has accompanied the three
friends from one adventure to the next ever since, even
helping with their investigations. All three of the kids have a
great interest in history, which is why they return to the old
monastic library of Siebenthann again and again. This
library is not only a great resource for their search for new
information about their favorite subject (history), it also
contains a mysterious room called the Tempus. In it, time
lives. There are thousands of doors with years inscribed on
them, and when Julian, Kim and Leon pass through one of
them, they travel to that place and time. Once arrived in the
past, the three friends find themselves dressed in the style
of the era and can understand the language spoken around
them. Their time travels last only a few seconds in "real
time", even if the historical adventure lasts much longer.
Their absence isn't noticed in the present.
Each book includes an afterword discussing which aspects
of the story are authentic, whether the case has actually
been solved or summarizing the current status of scholarly
research. There is also a glossary at the end of each book
with important terms pertaining to the time period.
CONTENT
The Time Detectives travel to Pompeii in the year 80 BCE,
where they witness several wealthy and prominent citizens
of the city being assaulted. They find out that following
Rome's victory over Pompeii, the Roman dictator Sulla
wants to oust the established elite leaders of Pompeii. Is he
behind the attacks? But when Sulla visits the city, he himself
barely escapes an assault. The Time Detectives take up the
search and finally solve the case: the attacks were directed
toward citizens who had sided with Sulla. The perpetrators
are the innkeeper Spurius and his partner Sofia.
There is something special about this volume of the Time
Detectives: interspersed throughout the text are riddles,
written as grafitti on the walls of the houses in Pompeii,
among other places.

should take care of the Sunshine Ranch while she's gone?
For the six horse-crazy girls there's no question: they'll take
care of the farm. At first they divide the work among
themselves and everything goes well. But then one day the
pregnant mare Becky simply vanishes. Has she been stolen?
Tori and the other girls feverishly search for her. The
suspicious owner of a new horse stable proves to be
innocent, and the trail leading to Mr. Muller, who works for
a pharmaceutical company that does experiments with
animals, seems to be a dead end. Finally, with the help of
her classmate Jonas, Tori finds out that Mr. Muller's son
Hans gave them a false alibi. The solution to the case: Hans
kidnapped Becky because he was afraid his father wanted to
buy her and use her for experiments. The girls are able to
parents are convinced their son needs to see a psychologist.
And he forces Sebastian to keep a diary. Sebastian relates
his adventures in the first person and illustrates them with
his own drawings.
They are sisters and could hardly be more different: the half
-elves Tiger Lily and Wild Rose. Still, they love each other
dearly. One night their little brother, Gray, is kidnapped. The
two sisters set off on a dangerous mission to rescue him.
The Chronists, a secret society that documents the history
of the two English noble families Lancaster and York, urge
them to abandon their plans. They divulge a secret to them:
all the members of the York and Lancaster clans are fairy
creatures, called feys, who think they are superior to
humans. The Chronists are bound to secrecy and want to
prevent the outbreak of another calamity like the bloody
Wars of the Roses in the 15th century between the two
families, who seem to be involved in Gray's disappearance.
Lily and Rose, however, won't be scared off and soon find
out that they, and their brother as well, have blue blood in
them. Their father, who left them a long time ago, is part of
the Lancaster family. But their brother Gray, it turns out, is
different: the three siblings have the same father, but Gray's
mother is a York - a scandal in light of the fued between the
two noble houses. Gray's father and mother wanted to
cover up their secret by simply placing Gray on the doorstep
of his father's former love in the human world - Lily and
Rose's mother - shortly after his birth.
The adventurous search for Gray brings the two sisters to an
opulent celebration at the house of York. It turns out that
the Duke of Ashford kidnapped Gray because he wanted to
rob the Lancasters of their last male heir. He justifies the
kidnapping with the fact that Gray's mother is a York. Tiger
What are the important things to consider when acquiring
a boy? What kind of boys are there? How much space do
boys need to feel comfortable? Hannah uses a handbook
for owners of pet hamsters as a model to write a user's
guide for boys - because every day she sees how
complicated it can be to deal with them...
CONTENT
Finally! Hannah is thirteen and is allowed to go to the
Halloween party! There's just one problem: she's on the not-
invited list, just like her best friend, Lorie. Perfectly
masqueraded, though, they manage to sneak into the party
of the century through a bathroom window. A boy in a
monkey costume asks Hannah to dance, and the two of
them have a wonderful time. Hannah is smitten by the
sweet gorilla, and blends in perfectly in her Darth Vader
costume. Unfortunately, she has no idea who is hidden
beneath the monkey head. The party ends without Hannah
or the monkey revealing their identities.
And now what? What's a girl to do when she doesn't know
what the boy she's fallen in love with looks like? When she
doesn't even know his name, or where he lives or goes to
school? Hannah has an idea: wearing a Star Wars t-shirt
featuring Darth Vader, she eats bananas during her classes
and at lunch while leafing through a book about gorillas.
And sure enough, she actually finds her monkey this way,
and he likes Hannah without her costume, too.
After two dates, however, it turns out that he doesn't like
Hannah enough to stand up for her around his cool friends.
And so Hannah quickly falls out of love again, and that was
that - Hannah's first real boyfriend.
In addition to the classic novel unfolding, the book also
Sixteen year old Art has to go to a party without his
girlfriend. And he parties hard. He gets stoned and drinks
and the next morning he doesn't know how it could have
The stranger is gone and Art is alone with his panic that
CONTENT
Art and Jules are both sixteen and have been together for
more than a year. At a party Art gets a little too stoned,
drinks a little too much, and abandons himself to the
moment. When a good-looking guy dances with him, he lets
himself be seduced - without really grasping what was
happening to him - and sleeps with the homosexual Miro.
He doesn't think about a condom. The next day Art is in
denial: Jules can't know anything about this at any cost. But
the thought of AIDS creeps into his awareness again and
again. Secretly he visits a doctor and finds out that a test is
only possible after three months have gone by. During this
waiting period, Art's world falls apart completely. His
relationship with Jules suffers first. Art is afraid to sleep
with her again, but can't admit why. When one of his
friends finds the doctor's business card, the rumor that Art
has AIDS spreads quickly. Art isolates himself more and
more, and thinks about death.
Jules' story is told from her perspective parallel to Art's.
When she meets Sebastian, and AIDS patient Art knows
from his first visit to the doctor, she puts together what has
happened. She grapples with the disease intensively, but
she cannot get through to Art.
When Art can finally take the test, the relief is enormous: he
is not infected and has his life before him. But it will be a
different one.
Delves into the highly controversial subject of violence and
xenophobia in schools.
CONTENT
The new school year begins violently. Suddenly there are
two skinheads in the class, flexing their muscles and
influence. At first their victims are Ayfer and Sürel, two
Turkish classmates. Until Victor steps up, a skinny, awkward
boy who falls for Tina, who is actually claimed by of the
brothers. Victor rejects every form of violence - the perfect
victim for the skinheads. For a long time, Victor doesn't
defend himself. That doesn't impress anyone in the class.
Only when he makes the brothers look ridiculous in class do
a few students take his side and even nominate him for
class representative. But he refuses, and no one
understands why. Victor explains that too much violence is
at play, everyday violence that the others don't even notice
anymore. On the contrary, they think nothing happens
without force.
After this incident, Ayfer becomes the class representative,
but only for a few weeks, because the brothers gain more
and more influence over their classmates and make sure
that the majority of the class turns against the Turkish girl.
Now it is Victor who stands up for Ayfer, and with that he
provokes an open confrontation. One afternoon after gym
class the brothers put a noose around Victor's neck. What
looks like a sick joke at first soon becomes horribly serious.
The noose is pulled over a pipe, Victor slowly turns blue and
is completely limp. Although one of the brothers backs
down at that point and wants to call it off, the torture
continues. But finally the other brother takes the upper
hand, picks up his bicycle pump from the ground, and
attacks Franco with it.
Exceptional debut novel of a young author. A very delicately
told love story and ghost tale.
CONTENT
Sixteen-year-old Mia and her parents move to a rural area.
Mia hates living in the country, her parents who forced this
new life on her, and especially herself. In her new school she
plays the cool, unapproachable one. Then she meets the
brothers Jan and Alex, who live next door. They live with
their father and their grandmother; their mother left the
family many years ago to travel the world as a
photographer. Alex, two years older, is a handsome and
cheerful guy. Mia immediately feels attracted to him, and
after hesitating for a long time, she finally does become
involved with him. But there is always an invisible barrier
between the two of them, and Mia withdraws when Alex
gets too close to her. His younger brother, Jan, is a dreamer
and storyteller who spends hours at the nearby river, and
seems to live in his own world. Mia is fascinated by him
because he is so gentle, and entirely different. There is no
romance between the two of them, but a deep affection.
Jan belongs to Alina, a mysterious girl that no one has ever
seen, but whom he meets almost every day on an island in
the river.
One day Jan takes Mia with him to the island and - in a
moment fraught with emotion - they kiss. From that
moment on, strange things begin to happen. Mia finds half-
rotten fish, first in her yard and then in her bedroom. She
discovers footprints in the yard many times, later in
Alexander's house, too: small, bare feet. While swimming in
the river at night Mia has the feeling that someone tried to
pull her underwater.
When Alex urges Mia to sleep with him one day, Mia snaps.
She tells him that she has kissed his brother. Deeply hurt
and angry, Alex leaves the house and the three of them stop
speaking to each other.
One day Alex is ice-skating on the frozen river - and falls
through the surface. He fights for his life, but realizes that
he will never make it out of the hole in the ice alone. Then,
suddenly, he has the feeling that someone else is in the
water with him, a woman, who tries to pull him into the
depths with her. At the last moment, Jan is able to rescue
Alex.
After this, Mia finally finds the courage to tell Alex more
about her, and even to clarify what happened with Jan. A
terrible family secret also comes to light: Jan's and Alex's
mother committed suicide in the river when her sons were
still young, trying to take the little ones in the water with
her. Their father, not able to tell the truth, told everyone
that Katharina had left the family ...
The story is told in the first person, alternating between the
perspectives of Mia, Jan, and Alex. This brings readers
especially close to the characters and generates a special
tension through the changing viewpoints, which only reveal
the truth gradually. The ice-skating scene, with which the

throughout the narrative. The identity of the narrator is only
