John BreauxMs. L<strong>in</strong>da Woods is a birth mother and adoption advocate. She has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> many volunteer groups andorganizations dedicated to adoption issues and adoption reform. She has devoted fifteen years to a local search andsupport group. L<strong>in</strong>da is the co-founder of Legislative <strong>Adoption</strong> Advocates and has served as state representative forAmerican <strong>Adoption</strong> Congress for three years. Most notably, L<strong>in</strong>da served as Conference Chair for the Louisiana<strong>Adoption</strong> Advisory Board’s mission to br<strong>in</strong>g various members of the adoption community together to listen todiffer<strong>in</strong>g perspectives, seek common understand<strong>in</strong>g, and promote jo<strong>in</strong>t solutions that perta<strong>in</strong> to special needsadoption. She has represented the LAAB Board on many events on a local and national level, and has chaired fivestatewide adoption conferences for the Board. L<strong>in</strong>da has submitted written testimony to the House of Representativeson adoption issues and has lobbied the Louisiana legislature for eleven years.Volunteers of America – North LouisianaSen. Mary LandrieuVolunteers of America of North Louisiana has served the needs of birth and adoptive parents <strong>in</strong> North Louisianas<strong>in</strong>ce 1935. S<strong>in</strong>ce that time, over 2500 children have been placed <strong>in</strong>to lov<strong>in</strong>g homes through licensed adoptionservices. Volunteers of America is a non-profit United Way agency that is committed to it’s mission of help<strong>in</strong>gpeople <strong>in</strong> very difficult times by provid<strong>in</strong>g car<strong>in</strong>g compassionate confidential support. Personal and confidentialcounsel<strong>in</strong>g is given to each mother will<strong>in</strong>g to explore the positive choices available that <strong>in</strong>clude; parent<strong>in</strong>g the childas a s<strong>in</strong>gle mother, or co-parent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a partnership with the father, marriage or adoption by a lov<strong>in</strong>g family.Volunteers of America provides the common ground where parents can come together to raise a child <strong>in</strong> love andsecurity.Most recently, the volunteers of America helped to positively promote adoption by film<strong>in</strong>g and air<strong>in</strong>g a documentaryvideo. No doubt, this video will help children, of all ages, f<strong>in</strong>d the homes they need and deserve.Ma<strong>in</strong>eBill and Ellen CountySen. Susan Coll<strong>in</strong>sBill and Ellen County currently have six children <strong>in</strong> their home, ages 22 months to 14 years. All of them came to theCounty’s as foster children. Four have now been adopted and Bill and Ellen hope to soon adopt the other twochildren.Bill and Ellen always wanted a big family, so they signed up to take foster children on weekends and holidays to givefoster parents a break. Th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g how this would be a good opportunity to practice child rear<strong>in</strong>g, they met Billy. Hismother was an alcoholic and addicted to coca<strong>in</strong>e when she was pregnant, and Billy was diagnosed with fetal alcoholeffect. The County’s <strong>in</strong>itially took Billie <strong>in</strong> for three weeks, but formed a strong, mutual attachment. When his fosterfamily returned from vacation, Billy moved <strong>in</strong> for good.Next came Rose, then Albert, and then Joshua. All of the children came to the County’s home as foster children, andthey were all adopted <strong>in</strong>to the family. Most recently, a brother and sister ages 3 and 4 moved <strong>in</strong>to the family. TheCounty’s are hop<strong>in</strong>g to adopt them as well. Ellen says, “I th<strong>in</strong>k I’ve earned the right to be a mommy and Bill hasearned the right to be a daddy”.MarylandMichael and LaRue BeckleyCongressman Roscoe BartlettMike and LaRue Beckley are a compassionate couple, who after their children were grown, felt compelled to <strong>in</strong>quireabout <strong>in</strong>ternational adoption. In 1997, the Bridge of Hope held a five-week camp br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g special needs orphansfrom Siberia to the United States. The Cradle of Hope <strong>Adoption</strong> Agency contacted Mike and LaRue about com<strong>in</strong>g tomeet N<strong>in</strong>a. She became the Beckley’s first adopted “angel” on February 24, 1998. On September 2, 1998, the
