Mary developed youth shelters <strong>in</strong> two different communities <strong>in</strong> Oklahoma. She has also developed other facilities forteens and their families <strong>in</strong> different communities around Oklahoma. Mary also helped to establish resources with<strong>in</strong>the Creek County community. Through a collaborative effort between several agencies, head start, and the publicschool system an alternative education program was created to offer a school sett<strong>in</strong>g. Pregnant teenage girls, teenswith children, and teens requir<strong>in</strong>g a specialized educational sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> order to reach their optimum educationalpotential were served by the alternative school.In 1993, Mary took on the opportunity to create a statewide therapeutic foster care program, while still uphold<strong>in</strong>g herother responsibilities, when she moved onto Western Pla<strong>in</strong>s Youth Services. Mary is now the cl<strong>in</strong>ical director atCVTS. She certifies all foster homes, matches families, staffs with councilors, makes treatment recommendationsand assists councilors, parents and children through crisis <strong>in</strong>tervention whenever she is needed.Lou Watk<strong>in</strong>sRep. Wes Watk<strong>in</strong>sReason for selection: Lou Watk<strong>in</strong>s has been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the process of adoption for many years. She works activelywith foster care through Wayward Girls. Lou plays an <strong>in</strong>strumental role of support for homeless and family shelterswith<strong>in</strong> the Stillwater Community, such as the Mission of Hope. Serv<strong>in</strong>g as a teacher and mentor for hundreds of kidsmakes her an excellent <strong>Angel</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Adoption</strong>. Her active <strong>in</strong>volvement through these programs ultimately led to theadoption of a child <strong>in</strong>to her family. As a very active grandmother, she cont<strong>in</strong>ues to serve these organizations, help<strong>in</strong>gto ensure bright and successful futures for children <strong>in</strong> need.OregonGary Conkl<strong>in</strong>gSen. Rick SantorumReason for selection: Bill and G<strong>in</strong>a Ackerman are adoptive parents and s<strong>in</strong>cere advocates for children wait<strong>in</strong>g to beadopted. They have opened their hearts and their home to three beautiful sibl<strong>in</strong>gs from Russia, Ir<strong>in</strong>a, Mariya, andYuri. When Bill and G<strong>in</strong>a learned that the children have another sibl<strong>in</strong>g, they began work<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d a home for him.In April, the Ackerman family visited Wash<strong>in</strong>gton D.C. to raise awareness of the need for improved care andconditions <strong>in</strong> orphanages and <strong>in</strong>stitutional sett<strong>in</strong>gs. Most importantly, they stressed the need to f<strong>in</strong>d lov<strong>in</strong>g,permanent adoptive families for children wait<strong>in</strong>g to be adopted.G<strong>in</strong>a is also work<strong>in</strong>g to enhance educational opportunities for children. She has discovered <strong>in</strong>efficiencies withEnglish as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and is work<strong>in</strong>g with her local school district and with teachersaround the country to correct these problems.Margaret Maria EvansRep. Joe PittsReason for selection: Meg is a birth mother, and the unsung heroes of adoption are the birth mothers. Giv<strong>in</strong>g up achild that a woman has carried <strong>in</strong> her womb for 9 months is one of the most difficult decisions <strong>in</strong> life. Meg is one ofthese women. She became pregnant <strong>in</strong> college and considered keep<strong>in</strong>g the baby. However, through much prayer andunconditional support from family, she decided that the most lov<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g she could do for her son was to give him toa married couple who had been unable to conceive a child. Through Meg’s selflessness, her son has a mother and afather rais<strong>in</strong>g him and a couple has known the joys of parent<strong>in</strong>g through adoption. She is now work<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>Adoption</strong>sFrom the Heart.
