Nettie and Danny JohnsonRep. Bill Pascrell,Jr.Nettie and Danny Johnson should be acknowledged for their determ<strong>in</strong>ation to keep sibl<strong>in</strong>gs together. They havefostered and adopted two sibl<strong>in</strong>g groups, despite the medical and emotional problems the children have. They nowhave a large happy family of which we should all be proud.Nettie and Danny Johnson were approved as foster parents <strong>in</strong> 1994, hav<strong>in</strong>g a strong desire to help children <strong>in</strong> need.The Johnsons were blessed with a child, but later found out that the child was part of a split up sibl<strong>in</strong>g group. After afew months, they were approved to take <strong>in</strong> the rest of the sibl<strong>in</strong>g group. The foster care unit had a late night crisis <strong>in</strong>1995 and needed to place another sibl<strong>in</strong>g group of two sisters. (One of the girls is classified as educable mentallyretarded). The Johnsons immediately agreed to take them <strong>in</strong>. The Johnsons adopted all five of their children <strong>in</strong>January 2000. Their determ<strong>in</strong>ation to keep sibl<strong>in</strong>gs together is commendable. The Johnsons enjoy work<strong>in</strong>g with thechildren and advocat<strong>in</strong>g for the needs of the children.Paul Simon and Jennifer Carll-SimonRep. Frank A. LoBiondoPaul and Jennifer Simon talked about adopt<strong>in</strong>g and after the birth of their daughter Mikaela <strong>in</strong> 1996, they decided thatit was time. After mak<strong>in</strong>g several <strong>in</strong>quiries, the Simon’s contacted Jewish Family Services who put them <strong>in</strong> touchwith an adoption agency specializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Russian adoption. Information about Andrei arrived and the Simon’s weresure they had found their little boy. They decided to honor Jennifer’s father’s memory by giv<strong>in</strong>g Andrei the middlename of James, her father had passed away one month before they went over to f<strong>in</strong>alize the adoption. In August of1999, after 9 ½ months of wait<strong>in</strong>g, Paul brought Andrei home to his new family.Today, Andrei James Simon is a thriv<strong>in</strong>g 2-year-old with a bright future and a lov<strong>in</strong>g family. The Simon’s havebecome local “advocates” for adoption, shar<strong>in</strong>g their story and offer<strong>in</strong>g their advice and experience to families go<strong>in</strong>gthrough the adoption process. They both agree that their hearts are full, their family is complete and that adoptionwas right for them.Gloria SmithRep. Rodney P. Frel<strong>in</strong>ghuysenGloria Smith has dedicated her career to mak<strong>in</strong>g the adoption experience better for all those <strong>in</strong>volved. For 22 years,Gloria has been a social worker <strong>in</strong> the field of adoption. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the past n<strong>in</strong>e years she has worked diligently on aprogram she developed at Children’s Aid and Family Services, which has been responsible for reunify<strong>in</strong>g over 250families. Encourag<strong>in</strong>g and advocat<strong>in</strong>g for the development of this program, Gloria has educated others about themany issues that adoptees, birth families and adoptive families face. She has worked endlessly for the right ofadopted adults to have their updated medical, ethnic, and social history.Darlene Marc<strong>in</strong>a SupnickRep. Jim SaxtonDarlene Supnick is one of the liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Angel</strong>s who works tirelessly for older, hard to place, foster and adoptivechildren. As the co-host of the “Let’s Talk About It” radio and television show, her efforts have truly made adifference <strong>in</strong> her own adoptive children’s lives, as well as thousands of other children’s lives. Specifically, Darlene isalways try<strong>in</strong>g to educate others about adoption and foster care through her speak<strong>in</strong>g engagements, appearances onradio and television, and through the various organizations and committee boards on which she serves. She is adedicated advocate for these children and fights vigorously for children’s rights and concerns. Darlene’s ongo<strong>in</strong>gefforts on behalf of these children are unparalleled, mak<strong>in</strong>g her truly deserv<strong>in</strong>g of this prestigious award.Marian YankowskiRep. Rush HoltMarian worked for the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) <strong>in</strong> NJ for 32 years. She served first as acaseworker <strong>in</strong> foster care placement and eventually became supervisor of the legislation unit. For many years shewas a foster home f<strong>in</strong>der, recruit<strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g foster parents. Many of the parents she recruited went on to adopt.Recently she drafted legislation <strong>in</strong> NJ, to implement the requirements of the Federal <strong>Adoption</strong> and Safe Families Act.For several years she has worked with groups represent<strong>in</strong>g a variety of viewpo<strong>in</strong>ts on adult adopted person’s accessto their orig<strong>in</strong>al birth certificates <strong>in</strong> order to develop an <strong>in</strong>itiative which <strong>in</strong>corporates the needs of all concernedparties.
