Jim DeM<strong>in</strong>tPat Wheeler is the Greenville office Director for Bethany Christian Services. She has been with Bethany for morethan twenty years. She is a highly sought after speaker on adoption issues and works actively to promote adoption.Pat was literally the first <strong>in</strong> the area to offer adoption services on a full-time basis. She is considered to be a pioneer<strong>in</strong> the South Carol<strong>in</strong>a adoption system.Pat is a graduate of Furman University and holds a Masters Degree <strong>in</strong> Social Work from the University of SouthCarol<strong>in</strong>a.South DakotaMark and Deb BarnettRep. John ThuneReason for selection: In 1996, Mark and his wife, Deb, adopted their first son, John, from Korea. In 1997, theyadopted their second son, Jim, also from Korea.Mark Barnett has been South Dakota’s Attorney General s<strong>in</strong>ce 1991. Through his position as a public official, he hashad the opportunity to br<strong>in</strong>g awareness to the importance of adoption. In appearances and letter, Mark speaks notonly of the joy that adoption has brought his family, but also of the important role of adoption <strong>in</strong> our communities.The boys are now ages 5 and 4 and from time-to-time accompany their father to U.S. Citizenship ceremonies andother public events.In addition, Mark and Deb opened the doors of their home last summer to the South Dakota Families through an<strong>Adoption</strong> group, host<strong>in</strong>g a barbecue for adoptive families from throughout the State.Mark has truly been a strong advocate of adoption and has had the wonderful opportunity to “sh<strong>in</strong>e a light’ ofawareness on the issue through his travels and duties as Attorney General.Tim and Pam HomanSen. Tim JohnsonReason for selection: The Homan family read of Felix, a Guatemalan child, who was hop<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d a home. Aftermak<strong>in</strong>g the necessary <strong>in</strong>quiries, the needed paperwork began to br<strong>in</strong>g Felix home from an orphanage called CASA, <strong>in</strong>Guatemala. In the summer o f 1999, Tim Homan visited Felix and spent a week work<strong>in</strong>g at the orphanage. AtThanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g, the entire family visited. Almost an entire year passed before they could br<strong>in</strong>g Felix home. Tim, acoach, has taught Felix enough wrestl<strong>in</strong>g that he has won some matches. They are help<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>tegrate Felix <strong>in</strong>to
