FULLER SCHOOL<strong>January</strong> <strong>Newsletter</strong>2013First Grade CurriculumMath:The students will skip count by twos,fives, and tens, identify missing numbersin patterns, and identify patterns on ahundred chart. They will also work onaddition facts and strategies to 20.Science:The students will know the weatherchanges from day to day but thattrends in temperature of rain (or snow)tend to be predictable during a season.Social Studies:Students will be able to describe howlocation, weather and physicalenvironment affect the way people live,including the effects on their food,clothing, shelter, transportation andrecreation.Writing:Students will be learning how to use thequestion mark and exclamation pointcorrectly.P.E.:Students will be using a ball to toss andcatch alone or with a partner.Language Arts:The students will learn to retell centralideas, respond to factual questions,make/confirm predictions, and readaloud fluently. Another focus will be toread long vowel words with silent e andword patterns: ate, ake, ite, and ide.Second Grade CurriculumMath:The students will be continuing their study oftwo digit addition and subtraction both withregrouping and without. At the end of themonth the students will be learning thatmultiplication is related to repeated addition andthat division is related to repeated subtraction.They will also begin learning their multiplicationfacts.Science:Students will be comparing the physicalproperties of different kinds of rocks and learnthat rock is composed of different combinationsof minerals.P.E.:In P.E. the students will participate in moderateto vigorous physical activities that increasebreathing and heart rate.Language Arts:In Language Arts the students will be working onthe theme ‘Amazing Animals.’ Ourcomprehension focus will be on Cause andEffect and the Author’s Purpose. Invocabulary we will work on multiple meaning andcompound words. Our spelling words will focuson r-controlled vowels, final consonant blendsand irregular plurals.
