It is one of the most colorful Thai snakes, and iseasily diagnosed by its pinkish orange body with a pair of black paravertebral stripes ondorsum, a conspicuous black stripe on the middle of the head dorsal surface, and thelack of transverse bands like in the other subspecies. We report here on the first recordof this subspecies from Phitsanulok Province, Northern Thailand. The subspecies is stillpoorly known. Currently, it has been reported from only three provinces, Loei, Chaiyaphum,and presently, Phitsanulok.งูทางมะพราวแดงภูหลวง (Oreophis porphyraceus coxi) ไดรับการบรรยายลักษณะทางอนุกรมวิธานครั้งแรกภายใตชื่อ Elaphe porphyracea coxi โดย Schulz & Helfenberger(1998) และตอมา Utiger et. al. ( 2002) ไดศึกษาทางชีวโมเลกุลของงูสกุล Elaphe และมีการจัดลำดับทางอนุกรมวิธานใหมโดยใหงูทางมะพราวแดงอยูในสกุล Oreophis ซึ่งมีความหมายวา "งูที่อาศัยบนเขาสูง" ปจจุบันมีสมาชิกเพียงชนิดเดียวคือ Oreophis porphyraceus ซึ่งในประเทศไทยมี 3 ชนิดยอย ไดแก O. p. coxi, O. p. laticinctus และ O. p. porphyraceus (ปยวรรณ, 2549;Nabhitabhata and Chan-ard, 2005) โดยมีการกระจายพันธุทางภาคเหนือ ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ภาคตะวันตก และภาคใต ซึ่งงูทางมะพราวแดงภูหลวงเปนสัตวถิ่นเดียวของไทยในระดับชนิดยอย มีรายงานพบในพื้นที่ปาดิบเขาที่มีความสูงเหนือระดับ 800 ม. ขึ้นไป ที่ภูหลวงจ. เลย และที่ภูเขียว จ. ชัยภูมิ (Chan-ard et al., 1999; Nabhitabhata & Chan-ard, 2005)ในวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม 2550 เวลาประมาณ 15:30 น. คุณหัสชัย บุญเนือง ไดเดินทางไปสำรวจกลวยไมที่น้ำตกหมันแดง ซึ่งอยูในเขตอุทยานแหงชาติภูหินรองกลา จ. พิษณุโลก และไดพบงูชนิดหนึ่งอยูในกอกลวยไมลิ้นมังกร Habenaria rhodocheila Hance เฟรน และประดับหิน22
