TMSAFETYDO NOT INSTALL, OPERATE OR USE THIS EQUIPMENT UNTIL THE FOLLOWINGOPERATING AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN READ AND UNDERSTOOD.1. Blue Ox Tow Bars should be used with carsdesigned or modifi ed to be towed.2. Set the transmission for towing accordingto the owners manual. Verify recreationaltowing procedures in the vehicle ownersmanual.3. Unlock the steering wheel for towing to allowthe front wheels of the towed vehicle to“track”.4. Be sure the front end of the towed vehicleis properly aligned. Unaligned vehicles willcause poor tracking and abnormal wear onthe tires.5. The use of safety cables or chains is requiredby law in some states of the United States andterritories of Canada. Check with the states orterritories that you plan to travel through priorto your trip. Blue Ox strongly recommendsthe use of safety cables (BX88196, Class IIIor BX88197, Class IV) and our permanentbaseplate safety cables (BX88207, Class IIIor BX88208, Class IV) with all applicationsof towing. Please refer to their specificThis symbol is used to bring attention to safety precautions and instructions. When you see this symbol, be alert and pay attention to all instructions. YOURPERSONAL SAFETY IS INVOLVED.installation instructions for more information.6. Check clearance between vehicles in aturning situation.7. Rear lighting is required on the towed car.A BX8811 Wiring Kit, BX8834 Light Bar,BX8847 (Saturns) or BX8869 (Bulb & Socket)is recommended.8. Prior to a towing trip, check to be sure all thetowing accessories and attachment points aresecure. Check for cracked welds and loosebolts/pins on baseplate and tow bar. This isimportant on all occasions, but particularlyon a new installation, when they should bechecked just prior to initial towing and againafter 100-200 miles of towing.9. Do Not Back Up when towing. Damage toboth vehicles and towing system may occur.10. Avoid sharp turns and rough terrain. Checkinstallation after any unusual event andperiodically on a long trip.11. Do not use the Towed Vehicle for storingluggage, etc.; you may exceed the towingcapacity of the Tow Bar and its accessories.SAFETY CABLE INSTALLATION1. Using the cable hooks, attach the cables to a solidpart of the chassis of the towed vehicle or to theconvenience links. Slip the end of the hook throughthe neoprene keeper to prevent the hook fromunhooking. (See Fig. 3) NOTE: It is best to havepermanent chains that connect the convenience linksto the frame of the car. (See Fig. 2)2. NOTE: Do not wrap safety cables around legs ordamage could occur to the rubber boots. If it isnecessary to remove slack from the cables, wrapeach once around their respective tow bar legsin front of the latch housing and then cross themunder the tow bar. (See Fig. 1)3. Using the cable hooks, attach the opposite ends ofthe cables to a solid part of the chassis of the towingvehicle if at all possible. Slip the end of the hookthrough the neoprene keeper to prevent the hookfrom unhooking. (See Fig. 3)4. Adjust slack so that the cables cannot touch theground or become caught beneath the receiverarea. If either of these things happen, thecables may become damaged and ineffective.DO NOT USE DAMAGED CABLES!5. Be sure each cable or chain used has atleast the load rating of the tow bar (5,000lbs).© 1996,00,06,07, 08, 09, 10 Blue Ox Division, Automatic Equipment Mfg. TMINSTALLATIONTOW BAR INSTALLATION(Towing Vehicle)1. Slide the hitch connector into the receiver tubeof your towing vehicle hitch. Secure the receiverpin provided into one of the two holes of the hitchreceiver. The inside hole of the receiver tubeis most commonly used. (Figure 1) Blue Oxoffers receiver and towbar lock sets (BX88101)(BX88177) that help prevent theft. Contact BlueOx for more information.2. Proceed with hooking up towed vehicle. (Page 3)3. DEALER OR INSTALLER: BE CERTAIN USERRECEIVES INSTRUCTION SHEETS.NOTE: The confi guration of the rear of yourtowing vehicle will determine how far you canslide the hitch connector into the receiver tube.Later, when the tow bar is folded, you may needto change which set of holes are used in thehitch connector or order a longer hitch connector.Longer and shorter hitch connectors are shownon page 6.CAUTION: As with any mechanical product, care should be taken during installation andoperation, to prevent your fi ngers from beingpinched.WARNING: Ensure that your towingvehicle is of adequate size to properlycontrol your towed vehicle. The weight andbraking capacity should be large enoughto handle both vehicles in an emergencysituation. Check your towing vehiclemanufacturers recommendations for towing, hitch load, and braking capacities. The hitch, ball, motorhome chassis, and safety cables(each individual cable) need to be rated at aminimum for the weight of the vehicle beingtowed.CAUTION: It is important that the attachmentpoints at the center of the attachment tabs andthe center of the coach's hitch receiver should beof equal distance. If a deviation must be present,it should be no more than four (4) inches from thetabs up to the hitch receiver. There should be nodeviation allowed for the hitch receiver tube to bebelow the level of the attachment tabs. Refer toFigure 2.Figure 1Figure 2© 1996,00,06,07, 08, 09, 10 Blue Ox Division, Automatic Equipment Mfg. TMHOOKING UP / EXTENDING TOW BARHOOKING UP (Towed Vehicle)1. Position the towing vehicle on a levelsurface with a straight driveway ahead andengage the parking brake. (Later, You willbe driving straight ahead to latch the legswhen extending the tow bar.) Position thetowed vehicle behind the towing vehicle in theapproximate towing position and engage theparking brake of the towed vehicle.2. Rotate the tow bar legs to the opposite sideof the stored position until the hold up bolt iscentered with the slot in the hitch connector.Push the tow bar legs towards the towingvehicle while raising them to allow the hold upbolt to clear. If the hold up bolt does not alignwith the gap, rotate the tow bar farther. Pullthe legs out away from the towing vehicle andplace them on the ground. NOTE: The holdup bolt will pass through the gap in the hitchconnector when the legs are pulled out fromthe towing vehicle. See Figure 4.Figure 43. Partially extend one leg. The legs are heldin with an internal "soft" latch. Pulling out onthe leg will disengage this latch. Place thetriple lug between the attachment tabs on thebaseplate, and secure with the 1/2" pin. SeeFigure 5. Be sure to the 1/2" pin is installedcorrectly through the attachment tab with thenose towards middle of the baseplate. SeeFigure 5 . Repeat for both legs.EXTENDING TOW BARCaution: It is possible to extend the towbar by driving away with the towing vehicle. This can cause the towed vehicle to wanderfrom side to side and does not insure thatthe legs will lock into position. We DO NOTrecommend towing any vehicle untilthe operator has confirmed that the leglatches have been properly locked asoutlined in step 4.4. On the towed vehicle disengage parkingbrake and set up the transmission for towing, see Safety section on Page 1 and unlock thesteering wheel. Pull forward with the towingvehicle until one of the locking handles areengaged and locked. (When locked they will"pop" up)NOTE: If only one locking handle islocked, turn the top of the towed vehicle'ssteering wheel towards the unlocked towbar leg approximately 1/2 to 3/4 turn, beforecontinuing forward. Pull the towing vehicleforward one to two feet until the leg locks intoplace. IMPORTANT: Check to insure bothlegs are latched properly before towing. Thesteering wheel on the towed vehicle mustbe unlocked at all times while being towed.Failure to do so will create hazardousdriving conditions.5. Install safety cables or chainsand lighting. (See Safety CableInstallation - Page 1).Figure 5© 1996,00,06,07, 08, 09, 10 Blue Ox Division, Automatic Equipment Mfg. TMUnhooking / Folding:1. Park the towing vehiclewith vehicle in tow, in a straightline, on a flat, level surfaceto insure minimum pressure isexerted on the tow bar legs. This will aid in the removal of the 1/2" pins.Engage the towing vehicle parking brake.Place the towed vehicle either in park forautomatic transmissions or securely in fi rstgear for manual transmissions. Unhook thelighting and safety cables.2. Disengage the leg latches by pushing downon the locking handles. (Figure 5) Removethe quick pins and 1/2" pins attaching thetriple lugs to the attachment tabs. You mayneed to tap the 1/2" pins out if there is stillpressure on them. Compress both legscompletely until they lock in place.NOTE: Each leg is equipped with a "soft"latch inside the end. Push in on each leg untilthey are held in detent by the soft latch.NOTE: Place the 1/2" pins back into the triplelugs and secure with the quick pin assembliesto avoid losing either of them.3. With legstogether, swing themup towardsthe towingvehicle untilthe hold upbolt passesthrough theFigure 6gap in the hitch connector. (Figure 6)Rotate the legs down to either side until thehold up bolt engages completely to the side ofthe hitch connector slot.Tow Bar Maintenance1. This tow bar requires periodic maintenance. It will be subjected to road dirt and weatherduring use. The following tips will helpmaintain the condition of your new tow bar.UNHOOKING TOW BAR / MAINTENANCEtow bar cover is recommended.3. Periodically clean the entire surface of the towbar with a mild soap and water solution. Wipedry with a clean cloth.4. Check and replace any loose, worn ordamaged bolts, rubber boots or cap plugs.5. Check for cracked welds and loose boltson the baseplate, towed vehicle (wherebaseplate is bolted) and the hitch on thetowing vehicle.6. In normal straight line towing conditions, bothlegs will be in tension. Due to the design ofthe latch, both handles will feel loose. Duringturning, braking or parking one or both of thelegs may be in compression. This will makethe handles feel stiff or tight. Due to parkingon slopes or the angle between the coachand the car, the two locking mechanismscould be in compression or tension or anycombination of the two. Having one lock intension and one in compression may givethe operator the feeling that one leg is lockedand one is not, when in fact whenever thelegs are fully extended and the springs areholding the latch handles up, the legs arelocked and ready to tow whether in tension orcompression.Lubrication1. Approximately once per year or if it is diffi cultto move the legs in and out you shouldremove the small cable ties holding the rubberboots on the legs and slide the boots back.Wipe clean each inside leg and apply a lightcoat of multipurpose grease to insure smoothoperation. Secure each boot back in placewith an 8 inch nylon cable tie (available atmost automotive and hardware stores). SeeFig 7.2. All other pivot points should be cleaned, sprayed with silicon and allowed todry before using. If you are using thetowbar in a harshenvironment, theserecommendationsneed to be done2. Keep the tow bar covered when not in use,on or off of the towing vehicle. This will cutdown on the dust and dirt build up on thelegs and latches of the tow bar.
