Message from MarcoNew financial yearbrings a clean slateThe last two years have beenextremely tough, and whilewe’re not out of <strong>the</strong> woods <strong>the</strong>reare encouraging signs that <strong>the</strong>South African ec<strong>on</strong>omy <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> starting toshow improvement. However, politicalinstability in <strong>the</strong> oil-producing regi<strong>on</strong>s ofnorth Africa are likely to have a seriousinfluence <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost of polymers – ourlargest single producti<strong>on</strong> cost.While I’m unable to divulge much in <strong>the</strong>way of detail, <strong>the</strong> past financial yearhasn’t been <strong>on</strong>e of our best. In additi<strong>on</strong>to <strong>the</strong> overall ec<strong>on</strong>omy we had <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>suesof our own, not least <strong>the</strong> protractedlabour d<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>pute at East Rand Plastics –our biggest operati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong>e thatshould be a significant c<strong>on</strong>tributor to ourbottom line.The first of March signalled <strong>the</strong>beginning of our new financial year,a clean slate from which we canmove forward and build <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> str<strong>on</strong>gfoundati<strong>on</strong> we’ve created over <strong>the</strong>last two and a half years. Much haschanged in <strong>the</strong> Group during thattime, and I believe <strong>the</strong> operati<strong>on</strong>s,pers<strong>on</strong>nel and structure are betterpositi<strong>on</strong>ed to take us to new levels offinancial performance. And financialperformance <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> bas<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> of how <strong>the</strong>shareholders – <strong>the</strong> owners of <strong>the</strong>business, many of <strong>the</strong>m staff members –will judge us at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> day.There are three key areas for every<strong>on</strong>eto focus <strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> coming financial year,<strong>the</strong> first being our goal of becoming<strong>the</strong> industry’s lowest-cost producerof plastic packaging. And we can allplay a role: our move to Syspro hasenabled us to properly understand <strong>the</strong>producti<strong>on</strong> costs of each product wemanufacture; WCM <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> fundamental tomaking our plants efficient; we’ve d<strong>on</strong>ea lot to improve energy efficiency and<strong>the</strong>re’s more to come; and our moveto a c<strong>on</strong>tinuous shift system <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> ensuringthat our machinery <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> used to its fullproducti<strong>on</strong> capabilities. These are allacti<strong>on</strong>s that involve every<strong>on</strong>e in <strong>the</strong>Group and we need to c<strong>on</strong>tinue toembrace <strong>the</strong>se resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities.Our sec<strong>on</strong>d objective <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> sales growth.In <strong>the</strong> short term we’re not expectingto purchase any new businesses soth<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> growth must be achieved fromincreasing our market share in thosesectors where we’re active andsecuring new projects. The RigidsDiv<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>i<strong>on</strong> has been particularly effectivein building growth through new projectsand th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> must be replicated by Flexiblesin <strong>the</strong> future.The third key focus must be <strong>on</strong>innovati<strong>on</strong>. It’s innovati<strong>on</strong> that willseparate us from our competitors; wemust move away from being sellers ofcommodity products that <strong>on</strong>ly allowyou to sell <strong>on</strong> price: we MUST sell <strong>on</strong><strong>the</strong> VALUE we bring. The work beingd<strong>on</strong>e by Peninsula Packaging <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> mostencouraging (see story <strong>on</strong> page 9) andan example of how <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge of<strong>the</strong> fruit market, toge<strong>the</strong>r with technicalinput from s<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ter company Knilam, hasopened doors in <strong>the</strong> broader freshproducesector.In tough times we’ve c<strong>on</strong>tinuedto spend <strong>on</strong> equipment to ensurewe’re capable of competing <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>innovati<strong>on</strong> and lowest-cost fr<strong>on</strong>ts. In<strong>the</strong> 18 m<strong>on</strong>ths ending th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> Decemberwe’ll have invested in <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> ofR200 milli<strong>on</strong> in plant and equipment. Wenow need to use <strong>the</strong>se assets to <strong>the</strong>irmaximum capability.Looking forward, I believe we’repo<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed for greater things. The localand internati<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omies are inrecovery mode. We’ve made significantstructural changes to <strong>the</strong> Group andeffected changes at managementlevel, and are now in a better positi<strong>on</strong>to maxim<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <strong>the</strong> opportunities that willar<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>e over <strong>the</strong> next year. It will still take<strong>the</strong> committed effort of every pers<strong>on</strong>in our more than 4 200-str<strong>on</strong>g team butit can be d<strong>on</strong>e.
