GSL reached thesame mark only once the restof the game.An array of superstitionstook place in the GSL dugoutin the remaining innings.Assistant coaches placed onlookingplayers in specificspots, and sat in areas theyhadn’t previously, as Schwirtzpaced the gravel in front of thedugout. But none appeased thebaseball gods, as Elsenpetercame in to close out the ninthfor the Royals; striking outtwo, and getting Teddy Petersento end the game on aground out.The Royal’s dugout explodedas they advanced to the sectionchampionship gameagainst St. Peter. The loss is disappointing, especially considering the Panthersout-hit the Royals, 7-5,but simply could not score.Maass pitched seven innings, faced 31 batters, gaveup five hits, three runs, walkedfive and struck out 12.WM...............003 000 0 — 3-5-1GSL...............100 000 0 — 1-7-0Losing Pitcher - Ethan Maass,GSL.Submitted photo from John GraupmannPaul Lemke. The McLeod County Chronicle, www.glencoenews.com,Wednesday, June 12, 2013, page 4BCake Mix, not just for birthday cakesWho doesn’t like cake? Isuppose there are a few outthere, but that is something Ijust will never understand. In my constant search fornew recipes to try, I have discovereda number of recipesthat use cake mixes as a mainingredient, so of course I hadto try a couple of them.Another of my favorite things this time ofthe year is rhubarb!Rhubarb can be hard to come by, so when Ihave it, it is coveted. There is a little patchthat my grandpa planted years ago near myfamily’s lake cabin, which I wait for everyyear.I picked what was there the last time I wasat the cabin and made this dessert that I foundonline.Rhubarb Dump Cake/Crisp4 cups rhubarb, cut into ¼ inch pieces1 cup white sugar (optional)1 (3 ounce package) strawberry Jell-o1 (18.25 ounce) moist yellow cake mix1 cup water¼ cup butter, meltedPreheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the rhubarbevenly in the bottom of the baking dish.Sprinkle the sugar over the rhubarb, followedby the Jell-o, and finally the cake mix. Pourthe water and melted butter over the top. Donot stir. Bake for 45 minutes or until therhubarb is tender. This turned out more like a crisp or cobblerthan a cake. It was very good and I will makeit again with a few adjustments. The original recipe calls for one pound orthree to four cups of rhubarb. I used aboutthree, but would use at least four next time.It also calls for a cup of sugar, which Iwould leave out next time as well. It was reallysweet. There is enough sweetness from thecake mix and Jell-o without the sugar. Here is another recipe I tried that turned outreally well. Another keeper. My Turn NowBy Karin Ramige CornwellUpside Down Rhubarb Cake1 (18.25 ounce) moist yellow cake mix4 cups diced rhubarb3/4 cups white sugar1/2 pint whipping creamPreheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease andflour a 9x13-inch pan. Prepare cake mix accordingto the package directions. Pour batterinto prepared pan.In a medium bowl, mix together the rhubarband sugar. Spoon the rhubarb mixture over thecake batter. Drizzle the whipping cream overthe top of the rhubarb.Bake 40 minutes, or until a toothpick insertedinto the center of the cake comes out clean.Let cake cool completely before turning it outonto a serving dish. The orignal recipe called for two cups ofrhubarb and 1-1/4 cups of sugar. After makingthe last dessert, I doubled the rhubarb and cutthe sugar to 3/4 cup. It was great. We didn’tturn it over, just ate it straight out of the pan. Here is one more easy, summery, fruitydessert.Frozen Berry Cobbler2 12-oz bags frozen mixed berries/peaches1 box (18.25 oz) white cake mix12 (or more) ounces of 7-Up or similarPlace frozen fruit in a 9x13-inch bakingdish. Add dry cake mix over the top. Poursoda slowly over cake mix. DO NOT stir thecake mix and the soda — this will give you a“crust.” If you stir the two, you will have acake-like topping.Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes orlonger until berries are cooked.Could it be any easier?4th-grade Panther Paw award winnersThe fourth-grade May Panther Pawawards were handed out at the final allschoolmeeting on Friday morning atLakeside Elementary.
