NedbankGroupTransformationReport2011–FinalDraft.36and600studentswereenrolledintheprogramme,inthetwoprovinceswiththelowestperformanceineducation,EasternCapeandLimpopo.NedbankMatricRevisionProgrammerunningmuchneededMatricrevisionsessionsforGrade12learners,spanningacrossfiveprovincesandcoveringatotalof25schoolsandinexcessof2000learners.TheprogrammeisrunfromLoveLifecentresandprovidessupportinMathematics,PhysicalScience,MathsLiteracyandTechnology.Initssecondyear,thisprogrammehasbeenextendedtherebyprovidingsupporttothelearnersthefullacademicyear.MobileLaboratorieslackofaccesstolaboratoryequipmentrequiredtorunpracticalexperimentswhicharecriticalintheunderstandingofPhysicalSciencehavebeenidentifiedasoneofthekeybarrierstoproducingstudentswhoexcelinthisarea.NedbankFoundation,throughitspartnershipswithTracSouthAfricaandSangarihasbeenabletoprovidethismuchneededequipmenttoruralareasacrosssixdifferentprovinces.EarlyChildhoodDevelopmentisessentialinlayingthefoundationforfuturelearning,andNedbankFoundationhasallocatednolessthanR1.5mtowardsvariousprojects,includingthedistributionofNedbankEdutainersandECDresources,aswellastrainingofECDPractitioners.HealthThestateofthepublichealthcarefacilitiesinthecountryposesaparticularchallengewhichisnotbeingaddressedbygovernmentatpresent.In2011weprovidedR414000fortheestablishmentofadedicatedpaediatricunitwithintheemergencyandaccidentunitofLeratongHospitalintheWestRand,whichisfullyequippedwiththelateststateoftheartdiagnosticandmonitoringequipment.Thisunitallowsthehospitaltheabilitytoattendtochildrenwhocometotheemergencyandaccidentunitintheirowndedicatedunit,whenpreviouslytheyhadtobetreatedintheadultunit.HIV/Aidsalsoremainsanareaoffocus,wheretheNedbankFoundationsupportseffortsaimedatalleviatingtheplightofthoselivingoraffectedbyHIV/AIDS.ThisisachievedthroughsupportinginitiativessuchastheRegencyFoundation,adonationforthephaseonebuildingofIsiphephelohomebasedcarefacility,andR300000supportforLeboneVillagewhichisacentrecaringforchildrenaffectedbyHIV/Aids.InFebruarywehandedoverthefinishedextensionsoftheHopetownPrimaryHealthcareClinic,averypoorcommunityinNorthernCapejustoutsideofOrania.TheR250000worthofextensionshaveenabledtheclinictoattendtoHIVcounsellingandtestinginprivate,akeycomponentofmanagingHIV/Aids.Thetrainingofhealthprofessionals,particularlythosewithspecialisedskillsisimportanttoimprovingthelevelofexpertiseavailablewithinthehealthsector.In2011wecontributedR400000totheCollegeofMedicineinSAwhichistheschoolthatprovidesspecialisttrainingformedicaldoctors.WealsoprovidedR230000forthetrainingofhomebasedcaregiversforLesediHospiceinFreeState.CommunityDevelopmentForacorporatetobesuccessfulinSouthAfrica,itisimportantthatitplaysavisiblerolewithinthecommunitiesitserves.Someofthemajorcommunityrelatedinitiativesin2011were:TheNedbankHippoWaterRollerProject,whichwaslaunchedin2010hasbeenextendedwithanadditionalR3.5millionbeingcommittedtowardsthis.DistributionoftheHippoWaterRollershadbeenextendedtoKurumanintheNorthernCape,LusikisikiintheEasternCapeandruralKwaZuluNatal.R500000wascommittedtotheNedbankWinterCampaign,forthedistributionofblanketsacrossthecountry,primarilybenefitingvulnerablegroupsofwomen,children,theelderlyandthedisabled.Variousmediapartnerswereused,e.g.SAFM,JacarandaFMandRadio702.Wehavealsocommittedsupportforvariousprogrammesforpeoplelivingwithdisabilitiesandsupportfororphanedandvulnerablechildren:oR592000totheNationalInstitutefortheDeaf,supportingthetrainingofhearingdiasbledlearnersinOfficeAdministrationoR500000totheJohannesburgChildwelfare
