10STUDENT ORIENTATIONAll new degree <strong>student</strong>s are required to participate in a <strong>student</strong> success seminar/orientationprogram prior to or during the first week of classes. Orientation is designed to assist <strong>student</strong>sin making the transition to a college environment. Topics include registration procedures,career and employment services, financial aid, business office services, instructionalprograms, tutoring services, college activities, and policies and procedures. Some limitedenrollment programs may require attendance at an information session prior to programapplication.ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT AND CREDITFOR PRIOR LEARNINGCredit by the <strong>College</strong> is granted for acceptable test results under the following programs:<strong>College</strong>-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Advanced Placement (AP), DANTES, andtests given by <strong>Ivy</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> instructors as specific subject test-outs. Transfer credit is awardedfor appropriate grades from courses taken at other regionally accredited institutions of higherlearning.Advanced standing is given to <strong>student</strong>s who have met the requirements for regionallydetermined dual and articulated secondary and post-secondary courses.Credit is also awarded for properly documented prior learning experiences and workforcecertifications. <strong>Ivy</strong> <strong>Tech</strong> acknowledges the prior learning experiences of <strong>student</strong>s by awardingcredit for appropriate prior learning. Such prior experience could include but is not limitedto the following: workplace learning, military experiences and training, nationally recognizedtesting, certifications, and community service. The awarding of credit for prior learningexperiences is limited to technical coursework. General education competencies must bevalidated through nationally recognized testing. If program accreditation or licensure issuesin certain programs preclude the awarding of PLA credit, the <strong>College</strong> will not award PLAcredit for coursework in that program. If you believe you have prior learning experiences thatmight help you earn credit in your degree program, please contact the PLA Coordinator atthe campus in which you are enrolled. The following time limits exist for the application ofcredit to <strong>Ivy</strong> <strong>Tech</strong>:CLEP and DANTES – five years after date of testAP – two years after high school graduationIB – two years after high school graduationTransfer credit -general education – ten years after course was taken-technical credit – three to five years after course was taken-credit for certification – certification or licensure must be currentREGISTRATIONREGISTERING FOR COURSESThe registration process includes financial aid and program advising, selection of coursesand payment of fees. Newly admitted <strong>student</strong>s will be notified when to register for their firstclasses. Specific days are set aside for registration before the beginning of each semester.Students should seek assistance in course selection from faculty advisors or advisors in theOffice of Student Affairs before registering for classes.
