W—WithdrawalA “W” status code will be used for student and academic withdrawals. Student withdrawal(W) is a status referring to voluntary student withdrawal beginning at the start of the thirdweek of the course for a 16-week semester up to the end of the week marking the completionof 75 percent of the course. To be considered officially withdrawn from a course, the studentmust file change of enrollment form with the Office of the Registrar. After 75 percent ofthe term has elapsed a student may withdraw (with the same result as indicated above)only if documented extenuating circumstances are submitted to and approved by the ChiefAcademic Officer or his/her designee.S—SatisfactoryThe “S” indicates satisfactory completion of coursework in situations where either a status ofsatisfactory or unsatisfactory (pass/fail) has been arranged by prior agreement. Requests forthis type of grading must be declared at time of registration. Courses graded with an “S” donot count toward graduation requirements.U—UnsatisfactoryThe “U” indicates unsatisfactory completion of coursework in situations where either a statusof satisfactory or unsatisfactory (pass/fail) has been arranged by prior agreement. Requests forthis type of grading must be declared at time of registration. The “U” differs from an “F” inthat quality points are not computed.V—Verified CompetencyThe “V” indicates satisfactory completion of coursework in situations such as test-out, creditfor prior learning experience or training, College Level Examination Program (CLEP), etc.Credit gained through this method may be used to satisfy degree requirements. This status isapproved by the Chief Academic Officer upon recommendation of a faculty advisor followingcompletion of necessary verification and documentation of competency.CREDIT HOURSCredit is described in semester hours (the number of credits taken per semester).Thenumber of credits is determined by the demands of the course, course work and by thenumber of contact hours - the hours actually spent in the classroom or laboratory.CREDIT HOURS/LOADA credit hour represents one hour of lecture, two hours of laboratory, three hours of clinical/practicum/studio, or five hours of internship instruction per week for the semester. A threecredit-hourlecture course, for example, meets 48 hours during a 16-week semester (3 hours/week x 16 weeks). An average full-time semester class load in most Ivy Tech programsconsists of 12-15 credit hours. A class load of more than 18 credit hours requires approval ofthe Chief Academic Officer or designee.17
