including Sam and fellow rose breeder Pat Dickson, brought the idea
forward and selected a comparatively new park to be the venue of what has
become a great rose garden and trial ground.
Sir Thomas & Lady Dixon Park was gifted to the Belfast City Council by
Lady Edith Stewart Dixon to perpetuate the long association of her husband
and herself with the City of Belfast.
The first roses were planted in 1964 and the Trial roses were judged for the
first time in the summer of 1965. Since then the Garden has won acclaim,
not only for its thousands of roses but for its fine setting of rolling lawns
and splendid trees.
The property is owned and maintained by Belfast City Council's Parks and
Amenities Section under Maurice Parkinson. The Rose Society of Northern
Ireland, founded by Craig Wallace in 1964, provides the permanent panel of
judges.

Rosarium Sangerhausen is one of the two great European rose collections.
(The other is La Roseraie de l'Hay du Val de Marne.) It is a living history of
the Rose. With over 60,000 roses, 6300 cultivars and more than 500 species
roses, it is one of the major repositories of the genus Rosa. Many varieties
exist only in this garden. Consequently it is an important research and
budwood source.
Located in the former East Germany, it suffered from many years of neglect
after the Second World War. Since German reunification it has made
significant strides in rejuvenation and in 2003 it celebrated its 100 th
Anniversary.
2003 Victoria State Rose Garden .....................................Victoria, Australia
The Victoria State Rose Garden contains over 5000 roses within the design
of a heraldic Tudor rose. The design of the garden is innovative and in its
entirety contains many extravagant features including The Tudor Rose, The
Heritage Rose Border, The Federation Leaf and the David Austin Bud.
The five petals of The Tudor Rose feature bush and standard Hybrid Teas
and Floribundas. There are also Rambling and Climbing roses and weeping
standards.
The Heritage Rose border is 400 metres long and contains old and species
roses. The Federation Leaf showcases Australian-bred roses and The David
Austin Bud is home to 50 fragrant cultivars.
