Organized in 1892, the American Rose Society is the largest special plant society in
the United States. We have more than 20,000 regular and affiliate members and over 350
affiliated local rose societies. Most ARS members are amateur gardeners who grow roses as
a hobby for their own pleasure. Members are found in all 50 states.
The American Rose Society offers the following services to its members:
• The American Rose, a bi-monthly, full-color magazine published 5 times a year
• The American Rose Annual, which has been published annually since 1916
• The Handbook for Selecting Roses, published annually - ratings of all roses
commercially available, tabulated from hundreds of individual reports from across the
country
• Cooperative research programs on rose problems at colleges and experimental stations
• Sponsors two National Rose Conventions and Rose Shows each year
• Maintains the rose registration system, and has been delegated by the International
Horticultural Congress as the International Cultivator Registration Authority for Roses
• A Consulting Rosarian Program - a network of more than 2,200 expert amateur rose
gardeners around the country who provide assistance and advice to novice rosarians
