the rose collections demonstrating the his<strong>to</strong>ry and development of the rose<br />

from species <strong>to</strong> the latest varieties.<br />

Surrounded by mature specimen trees, the garden is on undulating land<br />

beside the mighty Waika<strong>to</strong> River. The garden contains large informal beds<br />

of Hybrid Teas and Floribundas planted for mass colour, complemented by<br />

large lawn areas and single specimen trees with a backdrop of climbing<br />

roses displayed on frames, weeping roses on hoops and procumbent roses in<br />

a bed near the garden entrance<br />

Ramon Ortis Roselada is a magnificent, formal rose garden containing 500<br />

cultivars and 15,000 plants. It was contructed and planted in 1956, and is the<br />

home of the Madrid International Rose Trials.<br />

2006 Roseraie du Parc de la Grange ................................Geneva, Switzerland<br />

Roseraie du Parc de la Grange was built in 1944 and has been the site of an<br />

International Rose Trials since 1947. This beautiful garden overlooking<br />

Lake Geneva contains 360 cultivars of roses and 12,000 plants. Each year<br />

100 <strong>to</strong> 120 new roses are planted in the trial garden.<br />

2006 Washing<strong>to</strong>n Park International Rose Test Garden Portland, United<br />

States of America<br />

In 1901 Portland, Oregon adopted the designation "the City of Roses" and<br />

the first Rose Festival was held in 1907. Washing<strong>to</strong>n Park International Test<br />

Garden has over 7500 plants comprised of 550 varieties of roses. The<br />

garden serves as a backdrop for many community events, Rose Festival<br />

programs, Portland's Best Rose Trials, the Gold Award Trials, the All<br />

American Rose Selection Trials and the Award of Excellence Miniature<br />

Rose Trials.<br />

of America<br />

The Pageant of Roses Garden was established over 50 years ago, and <strong>to</strong>day<br />

boasts approximately 10,000 plants and 300 cultivars in a creative landscape<br />

of over 70 beds. <strong>Inc</strong>orporated in<strong>to</strong> the overall garden design are test garden<br />

areas displaying future varieties currently under test by the All-America<br />

Rose Selections (AARS) and the American Rose Society Award of<br />

Excellence Miniature program (AOE). Previous winners of these prestigious<br />

awards are displayed throughout the garden.<br />

In 2000 the garden initiated the first ever International Rose Trials in the<br />

USA and has quickly gained international recognition for the quality and<br />

maintenance of the entries among breeders and introducers alike.<br />
