Finally, it housessuch interdisciplinary programs as Communicationsand Media Studies and TuftsFilmWorks.More information regarding the programs andactivities of the Experimental College is availablefrom the office at 95 Talbot Avenue, atwww.excollege. tufts.edu, or by calling617-627-3384.Experimental College CoursesDesigned primarily for undergraduates, ExperimentalCollege courses are open to all members of theuniversity. They are credit-bearing electives taughtin accordance with university standards. Studentsshould refer to the Ex College website for specificinformation, detailed course descriptions, and dailyupdates.Instructors in the Experimental College are, inlarge measure, professionals from the greater Bostoncommunity, across a wide variety of fields, who havesome special expertise to share. A few select upperlevelundergraduates are also given the opportunityto teach courses of their own design, graded on apass-fail basis.On the average, the Experimental College offersclose to sixty courses each year. A selected list ofsome recent offerings follows:A History of Documentary FilmForensic AnthropologyAl Queda and Modern TerrorismIntroduction to Game DevelopmentExperimenting with PhilanthropyClimate Change and the LawExplorationsExplorations are intended to both establish a senseof community and promote critical thinking. EachExploration group consists of twelve to fourteenentering students who meet weekly in seminarsdesigned and team-taught by two upper-level students.A faculty member or professional staff personserves as academic adviser to the first-year students.Thus, incoming students receive both immediateand sustained support.PerspectivesLike Explorations, the Perspectives program usesupper-level students as peer teachers and advisers,but rather than each team of student leaders choosingtheir own subject area, all the groups attempt toanswer questions about the movies as art, business,and culture. The work done by each Perspectivesgroup will be grounded in study of how movieswork as movies and how they tell stories throughimages, editing, and sound.Auditing for BreadthAuditing for Breadth allows students to broadentheir education by attending courses in which theymight not otherwise enroll. A student may elect toaudit any three ungergraduate courses duringhis/her tenure at Tufts. Faithful attendance is themajor requirement for each audit. Students selecttheir own courses to audit but must have theapproval of the course instructor. One course creditis awarded on completion of the three audits and ashort paper. More information is available at theExperimental College office.QuidnuncsThe Latin term quidnunc translates into English as"what next?" This program is designed in thatspirit, allowing students to study as part of a peergroup that will collectively investigate an interdisciplinarytopic of the group's own choosing. Previousgroups have studied international health care, electronicjournalism, creating a sex education curriculum,sustainable development in Nicaragua, andconflict resolution and cooperative games.Communications and Media StudiesCommunications and Media Studies (CMS) is aninterdisciplinary program housed in the ExperimentalCollege. It administers three minors: mass communications,film studies, and multimedia arts.Intellectually, it places the study of media in criticalcontexts. Each semester, CMS offers courses of itsown through the Experimental College, while coordinatingand publicizing media courses offered inother departments. It also registers, supervises, and63

Relying onnew digital video technologies, TFW is theumbrella structure under which the ExperimentalCollege nurtures student filmmakers. Among theprojects they have completed are a full-length, Hollywood-styleromantic comedy; an experimentalfilm mixing found celluloid with digital video; anda music video with superimposed, hand-drawn animation;a documentary about Mongolia (filmingfor which was all done on location). Currently, studentsare finishing a feature length documentary onTufts involvement in the federal government’s biannualSolar Decathlon Challenge. All TFW studentsare trained to understand and appreciate thecraft of filmmaking while learning to use cuttingedgedigital production and editing equipment. Atthe same time they are engaged in ongoing studiesof film history and style.StudioTThe Experimental College is the administrativehome to StudioT, the on-campus access channel.Faculty-sponsored and student-run, StudioT hastaken its TV roots to the internet, where it streamsa wide range of programming. StudioT continuesto attract more and more students who develop,along with location and studio production skills,the ability to manage an organization, make criticaland ethical decisions, and interact in a positivemanner with students, faculty, and administrators.In short, the students who run StudioT learn tobecome leaders.Special EventsThe Experimental College regularly sponsors campus-wideprograms designed to bring together facultyand students. These range from films andlectures to dinner and lunch-time roundtable discussionsto an “election night extravaganza” everyfour years. In November 2008, we filled the CampusCenter, as the Tufts community came togetherto watch and analyze the last presidential election.Jonathan M.
