E N G L I S HUser GuideE N8. Operation8.1 Select measurement apertureThe <strong>iCFilm</strong> comes with 3 interchangeable apertures with the diameters of Ø 1mm, Ø 2mm and Ø 3mm. The apertures can be storaged in thecompartment on the bottom of the unit.Before you put the <strong>iCFilm</strong> in operation, you should select the desired aperture. Position the aperture in the let in snug fit intended for it onthe baseplate.Below the aperture there is an illumination. To accurately place the film on the measuring aperture, the illumination can be activated byusing button A.Attention:Please always zero your unit after having changed your apertures.8 GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide


User GuideEN G L I S HE N8.2 ZeroingAny measuring area on the film can be defined as a zero reference value which then applies to allsubsequent measurements.• Press shortly button A. Position the area of the film to be measured onto the measuring aperture.• Press button A and simultaneously push the <strong>iCFilm</strong> down.• Do not release the measurement head or button A before "0.00","0.0" or "100.0" is displayed.Note! The last zero reference is stored in the memory of the <strong>iCFilm</strong> even if the unit has been switched off.8.3 Measure density• Zero the device (see section 8.2).• Select "Dens" function by using button B as often as necessary.• Press shortly button A. Place the solid patch on the measuring aperture.• Press the button B and simultaneously push the <strong>iCFilm</strong> down until "100.0" is displayed.• Press shortly button A. Place the required dot area patch on the measuring aperture.• Press the <strong>iCFilm</strong> down until the digital value is displayed.• Any amount of dot percentage measurements can now be made.8.5 Measure negative screen percentages• Zero the device (see section 8.2).• Select "NEG DOT" function by using button B as often as necessary.• Press shortly button A. User GuideEN G L I S HE N8.6 Measure soft dotThis mode allows you to correct the value in the 50% area within -10% and 0%. All measurement values over and below 50% will then beadapted. No correction is possible for 0% and 100%. The correction adapts the measuring value of soft dots to their real size.With this function, non-printable dots (characterized by their low density, can not be reproduced on plate and press) can be eliminated.This can also be used to adapt the <strong>iCFilm</strong> to a dot reference with a true 50% dot area (i.e. UGRA Plate Control Wedge, RIT MicrolineResolution Target, etc.).• Zero the device (see section 8.2).• Select "SOFT DOT" function by using button B as often as necessary.• Select the adjustment mode by pressing buttons A and B simultaneously and keep them pressed until “SOFT DOT ADJ” is displayed.• Press shortly button A. Place the required dot % area patch on the measuring aperture.• Press the <strong>iCFilm</strong> down until the digital value e.g. 54.0 is displayed.• Use buttons A or B to adjust the <strong>iCFilm</strong> to the requested value e.g. 50.0:Press button A to reduce the displayed valuePress button B to increase the displayed value• Select function "SOFT DOT" by pressing button A and B simultaneously.• Any amount of soft dot % measurements can now be made.GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide11

CalibrationA GretagMacbeth calibration wedge is supplied for checking the calibration of the <strong>iCFilm</strong>.Attention: Check the expiration date on the calibration wedge. Correct measuring results can only be obtained with a valid calibrationwedge. Protect the GretagMacbeth calibration wedge from heat and direct sunlight, chemicals, mechanical influences, etc. A defectivecalibration wedge may lead to a faulty calibration and therefore incorrect measuring results.9.1 Calibration checkThe calibration check of the <strong>iCFilm</strong> should be performed periodically using the GretagMacbeth calibration wedge.• Zero the device on the zero field of the calibration wedge (see section 8.2).• Select "DENS" function by using button B as often as necessary.• Press shortly button A. Place the density patch of the calibration wedge onto the measurement aperture.• Press down the <strong>iCFilm</strong> until the density value is displayed.If the measured density value deviates from the density calibration value by more than ± 0.01 D, then the instrument must be calibrated.GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide13

Place the density patch of the calibration wedge onto the measurement aperture.• Press down the <strong>iCFilm</strong> until the density value is displayed (e.g. 1.80).• Use buttons A or B to adjust the <strong>iCFilm</strong> to the requested value (e.g. 1.75):Press button A to decrease the displayed valuePress button B to increase the displayed value• To cancel "DENS ADJ" mode press buttons A and B simultaneously until “DENS” appears.• Perform calibration check according to section 9.1.14 GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide


User GuideEN G L I S HE N10 Adapt <strong>iCFilm</strong> to other measurement devicesWith a simple operation the slope factor of the <strong>iCFilm</strong> can be adjusted to match other densitometers. The calibration can be performed withreference either to a required density value or to a given slope factor (if known). The proceeding is the same as mentioned in section 9 for thecalibration.10.1 Conditions for adapting the <strong>iCFilm</strong> to other devices• Both densitometers must work on the same principle (optical system).• Both densitometers must be set to zero on the same reference.• The measurement for comparative calibration must be in a medium density range.GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide15


E N G L I S HUser GuideE N10.2 Procedure of adaptation• Select "DENS" function by using button B as often as necessary.• Press buttons A and B simultaneously and keep them pressed until the current slope factor is displayed (original 1000).• Press shortly button A. Place the required density patch on the aperture.• Press down the measurement head until the digital value e.g. 1.80 is displayed.• Use buttons A or B to adjust the <strong>iCFilm</strong> to the requested value (value of other measurement device, e.g. 1.75):Press button A to decrease the displayed valuePress button B to increase the displayed value• To cancel "ADJ DENS" mode press buttons A and B simultaneously until “DENS” appears.The two densitometers are now compatible, and the new slope factor can be read on the display by briefly pressing buttons A and Bsimultaneously. The <strong>iCFilm</strong> is supplied with the slope set to a value of 1.000 and this value can be changed within a range of 750 to 1.250 toany required slope value. Press either button A or button B to decrease or increase the displayed value until the required digital slopevalue is shown. This procedure does not require any measurement operation and the values attained (multipliers) can be adjusted atany time.16 GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide

Replacing the BatteriesIf the "LO BAT" sign appears in the display your batteries need to be replaced soon.Procedure:• Remove the cover from the battery compartment• Remove the old batteries• Insert the new batteries while taking the polarity into account (The polarity and the mounting position are illustrated inthe battery compartment)• Put the battery cover back on again• Dispose of the old batteries in accordance with regulations12. Error MessagesAn operation or calibration error on screening positions, causes the "EE.E" message to appear. The measurement procedure must be repeatedfrom the beginning.Other errors:• No value will be displayed: The <strong>iCFilm</strong> was pushed down for a measurement for lessthan 0.5 seconds.GretagMacbeth ® <strong>iCFilm</strong> User Guide17
