The first member to be profiled by Regina is Di Smith – Let’s go girls!!!My love of horses began at a very early age when I used to rush out to the front gate to give a piece of bread or apple to the local milk carthorse. He/she then would sometimes oblige with a pile of poo nearest to our gate and Dad would retrieve it for his vegee patch. But, youhad to be quick. As a young teenager I used to spend weekends at the local riding school catching and saddling horses for clients to ride in the hope ofbeing rewarded with a little ride. Sometimes hockey or netball practise was a good excuse for being late home when in fact we werediverting past the riding school. When the time came to leave Grammar School at 16, I was offered a job at another riding school where I’d been helping at weekends –much to my parent’s disgust. It was no mean tasks looking after 16 stabled horses – alone – mid winter in the UK, teaching riders andtending to all the horses. The school was owned by an ex-cavalry man who was very tough. He made me ride over 3-4ft jumps in anenclosed area with no stirrups and no reins. This lasted for a couple of years until I got a “proper job”. Time passed horseless for abouttwenty years during which time we came to Australia in 1973. I got my first horse Rose in 1980. She was an Anglo Arab mare who bredfive lovely foals for me and four for other people. Her first foal Bascarnilla was my first dressage horse but lack of talent on my part didn’t take him very far but he did reach Inter 2 withanother rider. Other progeny came along and I educated them all in my own way. Bold Tribute – Tribby was a lovely fellow who went toelementary. Bold Enterprise - Sunny was next who some of you will remember. He gave me the biggest thrill by qualifying andcompeting medium at the Australian National held at Carrara in 1998. QLD hasn’t had them since of course. Even though his flyingchanges weren’t the best I had a lot of fun with him and was ready for Prix St. George when a little white dog on Teviot Road finished myplan of top hat and tails for my 60 th birthday. He decided to cross in front of me and by instinct I braked and Sunny hit the chest bar andfront of the float probably harder than we all realised. He was never the same easy going horse to ride and after several years fate took overand brought Bold Twist – Oliver into my life.At 62 with a horse straight from the breaker, I thought I’d gone senile but he has been such an easy journey and this year I hope to have aplay with some medium work and maybe – I can still get that top hat and tails for my 70 th !.I count myself very lucky to still be riding and competing and always remember the ageless Judy Mackay who not many of you willremember but was still competing Grand Prix well into her 70’s or so I believe. Other mentors in my life are Arthur Kotlas – Chief Riderof the Spanish Riding School and Sylvia Loch whose wonderful, clearly written books tell all about training and riding horses in the mosteasily understood logical way. Di Smith
