2011 -
the beginning
of a new deCade
As we leave the first decade of the 21st century
behind and embark on a new one, we must
take stock of our journey since the turn of the
new millennium.
The world has become a completely different place
today. We are in a state of unprecedented change
and upheavals of all manner are the order of the day.
By many counts we have come face to face with the
greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression
and we continue to see uncertainty in the global
economy especially in the US and Europe. However
despite the gloom, we have come a long way.
As a business grouping, Scomi undertook various
rationalisation measures and implemented a
series of cost management initiatives to streamline
operations and increase efficiencies. The first phase of
strengthening our balance sheet was finalised with the
completion of the rights issues via our restructuring
exercise. We also disposed of businesses that did not
complement the Group’s overall strategic directions.
These measures have left us on a stronger footing and
we are now on track towards meeting our goal of 25%
ROCE by end 2011.
Last year also saw us move to our new ‘green’ premises
at 1 First Avenue, officially making it Scomi’s new
global headquarters. The move has resulted in a more
conducive and safer work environment as well as a
chance to augment our services to business partners
and customers.
2011 will be an important year for us especially
since it is the final year of Formula 2011. I, for one
am confident the various initiatives the Group is
undertaking will help further strengthen our position
so we can continue to focus on moulding our business
into areas we can achieve better shareholder value in.
For now, an air of festivity prevails so a hearty Gong
Xi Fa Cai goes out to all our readers celebrating
Chinese New Year. May 2011 and the Year of
the Rabbit be our most robust ever.
Let’s embrace the new decade with a
sense of vigour, drive and enthusiasm.
Best regards,
Scomi Oiltools AS opened its new stateof-the-art
drilling waste treatment plant in
Sandnessjøen, Norway on 13 August 2010
to provide its client BP with solids control,
containment and handling services as well as
processing of drilling waste and waste water
for disposal in Norway.
The facility features the combination of thermal
desorption and membrane technologies, into
a seamless system for waste elimination to
ensure regulatory requirements are met and
recyclable materials can be reused.
The highlight of our facility is the ImmaPure
water treatment system that we have
introduced. The ImmaPure system is
our solution to separate pollutants from
The system is in two parts. The first part
process, separate and purify the waste water
by removing heavy metals and reducing the
total organic carbon content of the water to
desired levels.
Using innovative non-ceramic membrane
Scomi Oiltools Norway had a 34 square
Seas (ONS) exhibition in Stavanger from 24-
27 August 2010.
This year’s ONS event saw a record number
of over 50,000 visitors from about 100
countries attending. We were happy to be a
part of the event with our Cutting Blowing
Pump on display.
We also took this opportunity to highlight
our innovate water treatment system,
ImmaPure, which was developed by Scomi
highest environmental legislations. The
ImmaPure unit also has a small footprint,
fitting comfortably into a 13ft or 20ft
container making it a viable option for
offshore use where space constraint is a
major issue. With minimal consumables
required, ImmaPure is also a cost effective
solution. It can be remotely controlled
requiring less manpower and is modular so
readily customizable to meet operational
volume requirements.
InnoTrans Berlin 2010
It was a big moment for Scomi Rail when we partnered with Alcan
Extrusions to showcase an actual cutout of the Mumbai Monorail
Aluminium Body Structure at Alcan’s booth at InnoTrans 2010 held in Berlin
from 21-24 September.
We participated in InnoTrans 2010 not only to promote the SUTRA monorail
on an international platform but also to gain technical knowledge about the
railway industry in general. It was also a wonderful opportunity to learn first
hand what the world’s best manufacturers were developing.
The Mumbai Monorail Aluminium Body Structure Extrusion was a hit with
visitors and generated much public interest about Scomi Rail’s capabilities in
manufacturing an internationally recognised monorail product.
Besides the InnoTrans exhibition, we also attended the Monorail Seminar
organised by the International Monorail Association (IMA) on 22 September
to discuss and debate monorail related issues. As Scomi’s representatives, we
presented a status update of the Mumbai Monorail project.
During the four-day exhibition, we also visited exhibition booths by many
existing Mumbai Monorail Project suppliers and potential suppliers for future
projects. Even though InnoTrans fully focused on traditional railways - two steel
wheels on two steel rails, there were many other concepts and technologies
presented that could be applied to monorails for weight and cost reduction.
InnoTrans 2010 is the biggest International Trade Fair for Transport Technology
with more than 2,200 exhibitors from around the world. Attended by more
than 100,000 trade visitors, this annual event has been established as an
international industry showplace focusing on Railway Technology and has
become an international platform for buyers and sellers of passenger and
freight transport technology.
InnoTrans features a full range of rail vehicles on static displays at the Messe
Berlin (Berlin Exhibition Centre) tracks located outside the exhibition halls.
Other key InnoTrans exhibits included Railway Infrastructure, Interiors, Public
Transport and Tunnel Construction.
TACKlE ISSuES
HEAd-ON AT GEM
10 JANUARY 2011 | FOCUS
The Global Executive Meeting (GEM) could be new
to some of us who just joined Scomi. It is an annual
conference where global leaders of Scomi gather
to review and strengthen strategies in efforts of creating a
high performance organization. In keeping in-line with its
principles, GEM continues to serve Scomi as an ongoing
prime event where leaders brainstorm to enhance current
business strategies, operational efficiency, improve marketing
plans and innovate new ideas for Scomi’s world recognition.
This year, a 2-day Group Executive Learning (GEL) programme
was introduced, in conjunction with GEM.
Thirty eight of Scomi’s Senior and Top Management were in
Putrajaya Malaysia from 1-6 October 2010, to attend GEL and
GEM.
GEL started off with a presentation by our Chief Learning
Officer Dinesh Chelvathurai who took the group through
Group Learning and Development (GLaD) framework with
emphasis on key programmes such as Management Trainees,
High Potential, Management & Leadership Training and
new Performance Management system. From thereon GEL
continued with training sessions on Quality Conversation,
with the objective of improving the overall communications
throughout the organisation. This was conducted by training
consultants of Maura Fay, Australia.
Subsequently, GEM started with an eye opening presentation
by our Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Shah Hakim Zain
who delivered his view of the future where he emphasised on
his expectations and Scomi’s strategic directions towards being
a Global Technology Enterprise with high returns.
Shah highlighted that the focus of GEM 2010 was on
repositioning Scomi from a High Cost/High Premium
organization to a Low Cost/High Premium organization.
This transformation requires the team to maintain
competitive advantage and focus on market composition.
The management team is expected to strategize on winning
the market share by adopting product pricing strategy to
price sensitive customers. On that note, the organisation
must be able to operate at a lower cost than its major
competitors whilst maximizing profitability and achieving
high return on investment.

Another important message from the GCEO
was the need to ensure that the 25% ROCE
target for 2011 is achieved. In achieving
this, management need to focus more on
cost control, technology investment and
effective funding.
And finally, the GCEO highlighted the
importance of talent development, in order
to build a high performing culture. He
emphasized the importance of coaching
and training, and urged leaders to continue
providing career growth opportunities
for staff. Leaders were also reminded of
leadership expectations to make decisions,
lead, prompt action, discipline and right
attitude. He added that moving forward,
leaders will be assessed on their abilities
to meet target, professionalism and talent
development.
Later, Madam Loong, Chief Investment
and Performance Officer delivered
her presentation on Scomi’s financial
performance and corporate transactions.
She shared the company’s post
restructuring position and its impact on
ROCE once all the proposed corporate
exercises complete. Further, Madam Loong
highlighted that for 2011, the focus is to
reduce costs and eliminate inefficiencies
via improved project management,
effective organisation structure, focus on
markets where we are strong, re-evaluate
markets that are non-profitable, achieve
growth despite balance sheet constraint
and clear responsibility & accountability.
Subsequent to Madam Loong’s presentation,
the Chief of Staff, Rohaida Ali Badaruddin
in her presentation covered the subjects
of risk management and performance
monitoring from a corporate angle. She
also covered Information Communication
and Technology (ICT) strategy, structure
and key projects for 2011. On HR, she
presented the HR Committee structure, HR
Shared Services, SAP HR enhancements and
engagement programmes such as focus
group discussions, Sports Club and Project
Pyramid.
Chief Legal & Governance Officer, Sharifah
Norizan Shahabudin then took the stage
to conclude the morning session with a
presentation on Corporate Governance
and how it can help improve company’s
profitability. She shared the Governance
structure and Governance tools which
include Board Charter, Internal Controls
Policy and Procedures, Delegated Authority
Limits & SAP Controls and Code of Conduct.
For the second part in the afternoon
until the second day of the GEM, each
business unit gathered in breakout sessions
to collectively discuss issues, review
performance, develop strategies and
on the last day of GEM, the President of
GEl
session
zeroes
in on
knowledge
sharing
12 JANUARY 2011 | FOCUS
A
two-day Group Executive Learning
(GEL) session led by Chief Learning
Officer Dinesh Chelvathurai was
held in conjunction with the annual Global
Executive Meeting (GEM) late last year.
At the session, Dinesh talked about the
‘Knowing–Doing Gap’, explaining that one of
the biggest problems facing organisations
was the non-implementation of knowledge.
He added that this gap could be bridged
through having an action-oriented culture,
building trust, coaching and having leaders
act as role models by walking the talk.
Dinesh also gave an update on the initiatives
of Group Learning and Development (GLaD)
and explained how GLaD’s strategy is aligned
to the Corporate Strategic Goal that requires
the Company to nurture a clear pipeline of
talent if it is to achieve the ROCE target of
25% by 2011.
Learning, development and leadership were
identified as two of the three key drivers
of Employee Engagement and GLaD’s
objectives of fostering a learning culture
within the organisation and building a
sustainable leadership pipeline were vital
cogs in enhancing engagement. Managers
too played a huge role in creating a culture
of learning and in talent development. In
this regard, the importance of manager
participation and support in learning and
development activities was also stressed.
Later Dinesh explained the new
leadership competencies as well as the
new Performance Assessment Capability
Enhancement (PACE) that will replace
ACE, the previous assessment tool. The
new leadership framework comprises the
following capabilities:
• People Leadership (Developing Talent)
• Personal Leadership (Professionalism)
• Business Leadership (Meeting Targets)
Training on PACE will be rolled out soon in
order for all employees to have a clearer

understanding of what competencies
are required for each of these leadership
capabilities.
The Five Attributes of a High Performance
Team i.e. Building Trust, Mastering Conflict,
Achieving Commitment, Embracing
Accountability and Focusing on Results
were discussed in detail with the
conclusion that in order to build a high
performance culture, it was necessary to
foster an environment in which employees
were comfortable giving feedback to each
other and having ‘quality conversations’.
The morning session ended with a quiz
where everyone was shown pictures of
smiling faces and asked to spot which
smiles were genuine and which were
fake. The objective of the quiz was to
develop our sense of reading emotions
better. Annie Chin showed that Financial
Controllers not only read numbers but
faces too – she topped the group with a
score of 19 out of a possible 20.
The GEL sessions also included a workshop
on ‘quality conversations’ facilitated by
Steev Cole, Nicole Stinton and Dayal Singh
from the Maura Fay Group, a company
based in Australia specialising in improving
organisational effectiveness through
communications skills training. Maura Fay’s
unique selling proposition is their “Actor
Factor” as their facilitators are trained in acting
or are professional actors. In this way, they can
more effectively demonstrate the different
ways in which managers communicate
through exaggerated role-playing.
The central theme was that “while no
conversation is guaranteed to change
the trajectory of a business, a career or
a relationship, any conversation can”.
The importance of authentic one-onone
conversations was highlighted and
participants were asked to identity why they
avoided having difficult conversations and
how it impacted their business effectiveness
through misunderstandings and entrenched
positions among others.
Through role-playing, the facilitators
demonstrated how body language could
affect the initial impressions we make. They
then helped participants develop greater
self-awareness and understanding of how
others perceive them. Participants were
also taught the concept of “listening with
the intent to understand” using the LAER
Technique that requires the person to Listen,
Acknowledge, Explore and Respond. It is
worthwhile remembering that ‘Listen’ is an
anagram of ‘Silent’! In order to practice active
listening, participants learned to listen more
and not dominate a conversation, as was
often the case.
On the second day, the facilitators
demonstrated four types of feedback - positive
feedback, constructive feedback, negative
feedback and no feedback, identifying the
attributes as well as the problems of each
approach. Participants were then introduced
to the SBI Model, a specific and objective
framework for providing feedback that focuses
on the following:
• SITuATION – What is the context /
reason for the feedback?
• BEHAVIOur – Be factual and specific as
to what happened
• IMPACT – What impact did the person’s
actions / behaviour have?
The participants were given an opportunity
to practice giving feedback to each other and
many quality conversations took place during
the course of the day. The session ended with
participants having to write a personal action
plan as to how they intended to use the
techniques they had learnt when they got
back to the workplace.
It was an interesting and informative two
days and we hope that the Knowing–
Doing Gap can indeed be bridged through
implementation of the knowledge that was
gained.
25 October 2010 became an
auspicious and memorable day
for Scomi as we officially moved to
our new global headquarters (HQ) at 1 First
Avenue. Accredited as a Green Building with
multimedia super corridor (MSC) status, 1
First Avenue is located in the highly accessible
township of Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya,
Selangor. The move involved all Scomi
companies previously operating in Wisma
The event opened with a short presentation
highlighting the ups and downs of working
at WCP - yes, those were the times we
complained about everything!
The decision to move to 1 First Avenue was not
easy, as we had been working at WCP since
2000. However as the Company expanded
and space became limited, we had to consider
relocation in order to provide better working
conditions and more conducive and safer
working surroundings for employees. The
move also helped augment our services to our
business partners and customers.
1 First Avenue provides enhanced facilities
complete with a nursing room for new
mothers and a sick bay. There is also ample
and affordable parking space that is well lit
and well ventilated complete with CCTV.
Employees are also spoilt for choice during
lunch as there are many eateries at the
nearby 1 Utama Shopping Centre.
As 1 First Avenue is a Green Building, all of us
at Team Scomi are doing our bit for a greener
environment by making it a habit to reuse,
reduce, recycle. Let’s keep going ‘green’.
ATTENdING the Executive Management
Programme (EMP) 1 in Dubai from 7 - 11
November 2010 was a great opportunity to
further develop our managerial and leadership
skills. The main objectives of the training were
to understand a manager’s roles, skills and
interpersonal skills.
The five-day course
covered teamwork,
creativity and
innovation, customer
service, financial
skills, communication,
motivation, time
management, coaching
and presentation skills.
The purpose of each
subject was to enhance
the individual skills of each participant.
Each subject included role-plays and activities.
One role-play helped demonstrate our
customer service abilities and required each
group to create a sales and customer service
situation. My group staged a desert safari tour
office. Our aim was to find out tourists’ needs,
meet their expectations and make their tour
memorable so they would market our services
to others through word of mouth.
The financial skills portion was the most
beneficial of all the subjects, helping us
understand the functionalities of finance
better. We all agreed that the advanced twoday
financial training planed for Q2 2011
would be even more beneficial to us as it is
said to be more
in-depth.
Each of us
our own key
from the
training
course to
several learning points.
We would like to thank Dinesh and Azah
Their hard work, extensive knowledge and
friendliness truly uplifted our morale. Both
are valuable assets to Scomi and we are all
Scomi’s Global Research & Technology
Centre (GRTC) conducted a training session
from 5-6 July 2010 to introduce drilling and
drilling fluids operations to some 20 nontechnical
personnel.
Erwin Ariyanto, head of training at GRTC, got the
course underway with the topic “Drilling a Well”
that covered the characteristics of rock including
which rock formations were likely to contain
oil and/or gas. We also learned what actually
happens when the drill bit is manoeuvred and
sunk into the ground to ‘dig’ a hole.
After that, we were introduced to Scomi’s
Drilling Fluids Systems and Products that
meant us donning lab coats and safety
glasses for mud testing. A fair few did seem
quite squeamish when dealing with the
mud but it was understandable as we were
performing tests on a thick, brown liquid.
We also learned about basic ‘mud maths’ or
drilling fluids calculations. This was the last
session before our training ended with a
short examination.
All in all, this was a very informative and eyeopening
learning experience and I would
strongly recommend this training even to
those outside of Scomi Oiltools.
Russians escape
smog with teambuilding outing
WITH the extreme weather conditions in
Moscow from July to August last year that
resulted in heavy smog, we were just waiting
for an excuse to escape from the smog and
go for a retreat. So on 9 August, the Scomi
Moscow team headed for the northern
countryside for a sail along the river on
wooden boats.
With clear blue skies above, fresh air around
us and the joy of finally being able to breathe
without protective facemasks, the day turned
out to be truly enjoyable. Besides enjoying
the beautiful picturesque surroundings as
well as the swimming and dancing, we also
organised a teambuilding event. We divided
ourselves into two groups and did various
tasks to find the “formula for success” for the
winning team. And we succeeded!
It was a friendly competition between the
teams as each team pooled their talents and
gave their best both individually and as team
players, discovering that diversity is our greatest
asset; and trust, cooperation and effective
communication are the keys to a team’s success.
It was a great team experience that will surely
help us create a better work environment
when we get back to the office.
THE NKLF-based engineering team arrived
at our new corporate office on 2 December
Dinesh of the GLaD team. Many were dazzled
at the sight of our new corporate office and
were truly excited to receive their new blue
engineering t-shirts.
In his introduction, Tony Prove, Head of
Systems Engineering, said that departmental
teamwork should be intensified to improve
overall productivity and that everyone
must view “teamwork” in a broader
perspective that included interfaces with
other departments. He said effective
teamwork was built upon continuous
trust and improved communication that
directly reflected how comfortable team
members felt about working together. He
said teams that trust each other and practise
accountability were better able to appreciate
and tap into each other’s strengths. This in
turn delivered superior results.
To further illustrate this point, a demonstration
of the “trust fall” was performed. This involved
a person falling backwards and completely
trusting others to catch him or her.
One of our colleagues mentioned there
could only be one team... TEAM SCOMI. So
“GIVE a man a fish and you will feed him for
one day, teach him how to fish and he will be
able to feed himself for life”. This proverb reflects
the importance of education and Scomi Oiltools
Mexico took this to heart when they involved
themselves in a project with UNICOLTAB (a non-
Australians
treat kids to
Circus Quirkus
profit association) to rehabilitate a rural library
located in Tabasco, Mexico.
For this effort, Scomi provided the financial
means to renovate the entire library as well
as donated computers for library use.
With the slogan “Donate a book, promote
reading and take a library in your heart”,
Scomi and UNICOLTAB encouraged people
to donate books for the library. Donation
containers were strategically placed at
shopping centres, hotels, offices, universities
and schools and we are happy to say that by
the end of the library campaign over 1,000
books were collected.
Overall the project was a success and
will certainly benefit the children in the
community by providing them with a source
of knowledge.
IN support of the Police and Community Youth Center in Ballajura,
a residential suburb adjacent to our facility in Perth, Scomi Oiltools
Australia made a donation towards the centre’s activities for
disadvantaged children.
As a treat, these special-needs kids were treated to Circus Quirkus, a
non-animal circus style show that inspires fun and excitement.
Full of energy and quirky acts, the circus truly uplifted the spirits
of the kids if their laughter and delighted reaction was anything to
go by. Kudos to all the performers in Circus Quirkus for making the
kids so happy.
From its inaugural 2002 performance in Perth, Western Australia,
Circus Quirkus has become one of Perth’s most popular productions.
hats off to Scomi oiltools Malaysia!
Our Miri and Labuan Team in East Malaysia performed beyond our
best expectations in the Business Performance Review with their
client, Shell. The review covered a 14-month period and the team
was rated green in all parameters, although we rated Shell with
yellow on responsiveness.
All the Shell drilling teams praised Scomi’s performance for both
DF and DWM. This also included our performance for SPEX (Shell in
Philippines) that was coordinated from Manila.
Shell was very pleased with all the members of our team especially
Project Pyramid Season 3 was
officially launched on 3 September
2010 and officiated by our
Group CEO, Shah Hakim Zain. Since it
was launched during the holy month
of Ramadhan (fasting month), a simple
yet joyful Bazaar Ramadhan was held in
conjunction with the Season 3 launching.
At the launch, the Blue, Green, Red & Yellow
Houses from Scomi Sports Club (SSC) were
granted with a fund called the “Seed” fund.
Seed fund amounting to RM37,500.00 were
handed in the form of mock cheque to the
respective house captains. The Seed fund
allocated for the houses is to help them
to execute at least 4 CSR initiatives by end
January.
In the effort of reaching out to the
community within Scomi or at large, all
houses are required to plan their activities,
utilize the Seed fund wisely and at the same
time raise more fund for charity.
All staff are required to take part in this CSR
effort conducted by their respective house.
Their participation is part of their BSC
encouraging them to be passionate about
contributing to the community around
actively encourage staff engagement.
For those new to Project Pyramid, here is
a quick run-down of its history. Launched
in 2007, the programme was a platform
to cultivate leadership capabilities, create
a mentoring environment, inculcate a
learning culture and foster “Living the
Brand” as the Scomi way of life.
With the success of Project Pyramid Season
1, it became the channel to deliver Scomi’s
commitment towards the society we
operate in through its CSR activities by
reaching out to diverse geographical work
locations. The programme fosters socially
responsible Scomi teams both locally and
globally. These teams actively participate
and contribute their efforts in activities
benefiting their community and the
with the
terry fox run
On Sunday morning, 7 November
close to 100 Scomi staff turned up
to take part in the Terry Fox Run
Kuala Lumpur 2010, an annual global event
in aid of cancer research.
The spirit of partnership and camaraderie
was apparent as the members of the four
sports Houses of Scomi put their hands
together and adopted the Run as one of
their Project Pyramid initiatives with each
house contributing an impressive sum of
money for the noble cause.
Funds from the Run were channelled to
the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation
(CARIF), which has a team of dedicated
Malaysian scientists who are passionate on
finding a cure for cancer.
Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian,
athlete and cancer research activist. Terry
was a distance runner and basketball player
for his school and university before his right
leg was amputated in 1977 after he was
diagnosed with osteosarcorma. He continued
to play wheelchair basketball in Vancouver,
winning three national championships. In
1980, he ran a cross-Canada run to raise
money and awareness for cancer research.
He died in June 1981. The annual Terry Fox
Run was held for the first time in 1981 and
today attracts millions of participants in over
60 countries. It is the world’s largest one-day
fundraiser for cancer research.
| malaysia
For us at Scomi, the Terry Fox Run is one
of the initiatives among many more that
is currently being planned under Project
Pyramid. Team Scomi will continue to reach
out to the community, encouraging more
of our employees to participate in Project
UPDATES ON
PrOJECT ENVIrOUS ACTIVITIES
QHSE MONTH: 3r TAlK By AlAM FlOrA
it only takes 10 days to fill up the Petronas
Twin Towers, if Malaysians, particularly those
living in Kuala Lumpur continue to produce
and dispose of 1.5kg of waste per day!
That was the ugly fact that Nurmazveen
Mohd Iqbal from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd
revealed when she conducted a talk on
the current recycling statistics in Malaysia.
The facts speak for themselves - Malaysia
does very little recycling compared to other
nations around the world. So it was clearly
high time for us to join forces and change our
attitude in generating rubbish.
More than 30 North KL Facility (NKLF) staff
attended the morning talk, which highlighted
the importance of reducing, reusing and
recycling daily waste. Green goodies were also
handed out to all who were present.
During her talk, Nurmazveen stressed that
reducing, reusing and recycling waste not
only helped protect our environment but also
reduced our need and dependency on natural
resources. It also helped conserve energy as
well as reduce the costs of producing materials
from scratch.
The talk served as the launch platform of
Project EnviroUs at NKLF, with many “green”
activities planned for staff there.
A big ‘thank you’ to all NKLF staff who joined us.
We hope the Scomi Green Office campaign will
be an even bigger success.

all unwanted recyclables during the packingup
At the end of the campaign, all groups
managed to collect a total of 3.46 tonnes
of recyclables that we exchanged for
RM888.75. Ahmad Najib’s team collected
the most with 680 kgs!
A big ‘thank you’ to all Scomi Staff at
This acts as a gentle reminder to everyone
to do their part in conserving energy and
thinking “green” in their everyday routine.
Great idea, OFS!
Shalini ensured that they incorporated the
3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) in their everyday
routine when at work at their office, at sites
when on business visits as well as at home.
PAPEr rEduCTION INITIATIVES: ONE
PrINTEr ONE WING @ 1FA
In line with the Paper Reduction Initiative
that began at Wisma Chase Perdana, only
ONE printing machine will be installed for
use at each wing in the new office at 1FA.
| malaysia
All users will be assigned specific passwords
to print in black and white by default with
only a selected few possessing a different
password for colour printing. By reducing the
number of machines and creating a longer
distance to pick up printed materials, it is
hoped that this will reduce unnecessary
printing which will eventually reduce all
costs related to the printing machines
significantly. This would include machine
rental, printer toner replacements as well
as reducing paper wastage.
‘This is us’…
and this day is all ‘For US’
The Monday afternoon of 13 December
2010 was indeed a day to remember.
The theme “This is Us… and This Day is
All For Us” meant the day was solely dedicated
to US, Team Scomi. Since the day was made for
US, we came to the office feeling carefree, with
hardly any worries and dressed in our most
comfortable, casual attire.
The day started with the Green House
team’s first ever Project Pyramid initiative.
Calling themselves the Green Fairies and
Elves, this team who believes in the secret
of enriching employees’ lives, offered US a
free 10-minute foot or shoulder massage
at their ‘spa’. It was a great way for US to
treat ourselves to a little pampering after
running around over the weekend.
That afternoon, the 18th floor staff lounge
at 1 First Avenue was abuzz with activity.
The room looked splendid with touches of
decoration and the atmosphere screamed
liveliness and I am happy to report that the
party delivered exactly that!
We had it different this time with the organiser
bringing food stalls to our doorstep! We were
spoilt for choice with the mouth-watering food
that was prepared with kebabs from the famous
Middle Eastern and Yemini cuisine Hadramawt
to the famous 1901 hotdogs. There were also
night market favourites like Apam Balik and Putu
Bambu. Not forgetting the Iddiyappam or Putu
Mayam, a South Indian dish that was served.
There was really no reason for employees to go
home hungry that evening. The 1901 hotdogs
were especially a hit. Turns out Scomi staff are
true fast food fans!
30 JANUARY 2011 | FOCUS
What added to the liveliness of the whole
afternoon were the six great performances
by Team Scomi. Kudos to all who took part in
the performances! From dancing and singing,
we were truly entertained watching our
colleagues showing off their hidden talents
in their awe-inspiring performances. It was
indeed good fun.
The audience went wild when the “Star” of the
day, Syahril Abd Jalil, Senior Manager Legal &
Corporate Secretarial SOL swept everyone away
when he emerged as the famous showgirl Lola,
who had lost her mind. Dressed in a party gown,
a wig and feathers Syahril got all of us screaming
with laughter.
The event accomplished its objective to live,
to work and to have fun. It has allowed US to
enhance our creativity, talent and to learn the
thrill of discovering and realising our potential.
The gathering kept US engaged, involved and
connected with one another.
Hearty congratulations go out to the
Group Human Resource Department for
organising the gathering. Truly their efforts
succeeded in bringing US together at
Scomi. It was great to see so many happy
faces that afternoon smiling and bonding
together. All of US had a joyous time as it
definitely was a much-needed break from
the stress of work.
