augsburg hockey<strong>Augsburg</strong> Men’s Hockey<strong>Augsburg</strong> Women’s Hockey<strong>Augsburg</strong> <strong>College</strong> has had a long history of excellence in men’shockey. The Auggie program dates to the mid-1920s, as one ofthe early entrants in MIAC play. The Auggies won state titles inboth 1927 and 1928 coached by future U.S. Hockey Hall ofFamer Nick Kahler.After not fielding teams from the late 1920s to the late1940s, the program finally was reestablished under coach EdSaugestad, who actually began his head coaching duties while stilla student at <strong>Augsburg</strong> in 1958. Under Saugestad, the Auggie programthrived, winning MIAC titles six years in a row (1977-82),while winning National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics(NAIA) national titles in 1978, 1981, and 1982. The Auggieshave made appearances in national tournaments seven times inschool history (five NAIA, two NCAA).After Saugestad retired, Mike Schwartz was named head coachin 1996, and he led the team to conference regular-season andplayoff titles, and a berth in the NCAA Division III national championshipsin the 1997-98 season. Schwartz compiled a 124-110-30 record during his <strong>Augsburg</strong> coaching tenure, and teams hecoached made appearances in the MIAC postseason playoffs sixtimes. Chris Brown was named the program’s head coach in 2006,and he has led the Auggies to MIAC playoff berths in three of thelast four seasons.In 1995, <strong>Augsburg</strong> <strong>College</strong> made history by establishing the firstintercollegiate women’s hockey program in the Midwest. TheAuggies were one of the dominant teams in the early history ofwomen’s hockey in Minnesota, winning Minnesota IntercollegiateAthletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season titles in 1998-99 and1999-2000, and the conference playoff title in 1999-2000.In 2000, the Auggies made history again, qualifying to competein the first Division III women’s hockey national championshipseries, the American Women’s <strong>College</strong> Hockey Alliancetournament in Boston against Middlebury (Vt.). Over the first 15seasons of <strong>Augsburg</strong>’s women’s hockey history, the Auggies havea 171-177-30 all-time record.A total of 150 players have competed as part of the <strong>Augsburg</strong>women’s hockey program in its first 15 seasons, all under headcoach Jill Pohtilla. Pohtilla finished her career third among all NationalCollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III women’shockey coaches in career victories and 20th among all collegiatewomen’s hockey coaches in victories.
