Head Coach AI Harden in 4th Year
AI Harden, the young
and energetic basketball
coach at the University
of Denver, begins
his fourth season with
the Pioneers after
serving two years as
assistant coach at the
school.
Harden is considered
one of the top young
coaches in collegiate
basketball and he took
his first year squad to a
17-9 record, just missing
AI Harden an independent berth in
the NCAA playoffs. The Denver coach went to 11-15 during
his second year with the Pioneers and compiled a 10-16
mark last season. Overall, the Denver coach has put together
a 38-40 mark.
He began his coaching career at Fountain Central High
School in Veedersburg, Indiana in 1965. When he left
the school in 1970, he had accounted for 73 wins and only
36 losses while winning the Wabash River Conference
Championship twice. During one stretch his team ran off
36 consecutive wins.
He came to the University of Denver in 1970 as an
assistant coach in charge of scouting and recruiting.
He took charge of the Pioneer freshmen program in
1971-72, leading the Denver freshmen to a 20-3 mark.
That record marked the first time any Denver team-varsity,
junior varsity or freshmen-reached the 20 game win
plateau.
The 31-year old Harden played his high school basketball
at Covington High School in Indiana where he earned
the school's most valuable player award as both a junior
and senior. In addition, he was named all-sectional three
years, all-regional two years and all-state one year. His
high school team posted a 30-4 mark during his junior
year and a 22-4 mark when he was a senior. Harden was
also a four year letterwinner for the Covington High baseball
squad.
From Covington, Harden attended the University of
Indiana where he was a three year letterman. In 1963-64,
Harden was named to the Big Ten All-Academic squad
and during his senior season of 1964-65, he teamed
with now professional star Jon McGlocklin to serve as cocaptain
of the Hoosier team. The squad posted a 19-5
overall mark and at one time during the season were
ranked as the second best team in the country. The Van
Arsdale twins, Tom and Dick, were also a part of that
squad.
The Denver coach has served on several NCAA committees
and was one of the main speakers at the National
Association of Basketball Coaches Converse Coaching
Clinic last year. He runs a progressive summer basketball
camp at the University of Denver and a youth sports
program for young players during the school year.
He and his wife, Myrna, have three sons, Rob, 13,
Roger, 11 and Rodney, 6.
The Pioneer assistant coaches are, left to right: Steve Schray,
Jerry Causey and Mike Good.
Denver coach AI Harden will be assisted by three
coaches this season. Steve Schray, Mike Good and Jerry
Causey will all work with the Pioneers in 1975-76.
Steve Schray begins his second season with the
Pioneers after playing basketball at the school from 1969
through 1973. He spent one year with the Denver program
as a graduate assistant coach before being elevated to
his present position. He is one of the youngest college
coaches in the country. In addition to assisting with the
coaching duties, Steve is also in charge of scouting and
recruiting.
4
Assistant Coaches
He is a graduate of Lakewood High School in Lake
Odessa, Michigan where he earned the school's most
valuable athlete award as a senior. He also competed
in track as a prep, running the hurdle events. Steve is
married to the former Paula Erickson.
Mike Good is in his first season with the Pioneers while
working on an advanced degree. He was a member of
the Colorado State University team that participated in the
NCAA tournament during the 1965-66 season.
He entered the service after his playing career, serving
in the United States Army from 1968-71. He was a first
lieutenant.
He returned to Colorado State University after his army
service (to finish work on his undergraduate degree).
He received that degree in physical science in 1973,
worked last season as a graduate assistant coach for
CSU and moved to the Denver campus this year.
Jerry Causey is a veteran with the University of Denver.
An outstanding athlete during his playing days with the
Pioneers, he returned to the school in 1970 as an assistant
to Hoyt Brawner after distinguishing himself as a pro
baseball player with the Houston Astros organization.
He was an all-american first baseman with the Pioneers
in 1965 and holds the school's home run record. He
also played basketball for coach Troy Bledsoe. He has
served as assistant basketball, assistant baseball and
assistant intramural director since returning to Denver.
He is a graduate of Vallejo High School in California
where he was an all-american basketball player. He also
earned all-american recognition at Vallejo Junior College
in basketball averaging 25 points per game from his
forward spot.

DU Field House - Horne of the Pioneers
The University of Denver Field House has taken on a
dramatically new look since it was first set to rest at the
school back in 1947.
It was part of a $1.5 million structure that then DU
athletic director Ellison Ketchum decided was well suited
to the needs of a growing university. The building was
donated by the War Assets Administration and the government
paid for the dismantling and shipping expenses from
Farragut, Idaho. The University of Denver picked up the
tab for reconstruction costs.
The building was 95 per cent salvable, but erection costs
alone ran into the half million dollar range. The school
has made additional improvements through the years that
has resulted in the present facility.
One of the major renovation projects took part just two
years ago. An ambitious two million dollar renovation plan
was approved by the university's board of trustees in
February, 1973. That plan included the construction of
handball and raquetball courts on what was then the east
wall of the old Field House area; a new tartan surface in
the basketball arena; three separate basketball floors; and
bleacher seats for better than 2,000 spectators.
The remodeling was an overwhelming improvement for
the University of Denver basketball squad. Previously,
they had been playing in a 4,000 seat arena where the
floor was raised up with braces. A great amount of paint
and artists design have made the University of Denver
basketball facility a fine place to stage home events.
During the remodeling period, The University of Denver
team was forced to play its games at area hinh school
gymnasiums.
The University of Denver, oldest and largest private
institution of higher education in the Rocky Mountains,
is located in the southeast part of Denver, the capital of
Colorado.
Granted a charter by the territorial government of
Colorado in 1864 as Colorado Seminary, the school first
opened its doors to a mining town population of 3,500.
A faculty of three handled the enrollment of students during
that first year, and classes were held for three years until
the school·closed down due to financial problems. But
in 1880, the school was reorganized as a degree-granting
institution. Since then, the Colorado Seminary and the
University of Denver have continued to operate as one
institution. The real estate holding are in the name of
Colorado Seminary; the academic program is conducted
by the University of Denver.
The school began its move to the present location in
1892, when the liberal arts school moved to what is now
known as "Old Main," University Hall. Its cornerstone was
laid in 1890 and the building still stands. Gradually all the
schools which were located downtown have been moved
to the University Park area, just six miles from downtown
Denver. Only the College of Law remains in the city,
adjacent to the City and County Building as well as the
Capitol.
A faculty of over 500 now teaches at the school,
which has grown to an enrollment of better than 8,000.
Through its outstanding academic program, the University
of Denver has gained national and international recognition.
The University's first organized athletic team was fielded
in football in 1884. Baseball, track and tennis were soon
The University of Denver
added. And basketball became an intercollegiate sport in
1904. Since then the University has sponsored intercollegiate
teams in skiing, ice hockey, gymnastics, swimming,
golf, cross country and vtrestling. The most recent
additions to the program have been soccer, lacrosse and
women's sports.
Harden Looks at the Pioneers
OFFENSE:
We feel that we will be a fast break type of ball club this season. We want to get out and go. I
think we were more of a pattern type offense last season, but this year we want to go more wide
open. Right now, it looks as though we will be a free lance passing oriented team. I think there
might be a time or two when we will go back to the pattern type of game, but basically we are
looking to do a little more running this season.
DEFENSE:
Pressure is the way we will go on defense. I think we want to use a strong man-to-man pressing
defense. We have a much quicker athlete this year and I think that will help us put more pressure
on our opponents defensively. We were not a very good defensive team last season and we
need to improve a great deal in this area. I definitely feel like our personnel will allow us to do a
little more defensively this season.
PROBLEMS:
We will be very young and inexperienced. That is something that is difficult to overcome. Only
playing time will help that situation. We have to mold all the newcomers with the returning
players into a cohesive unit. The new people will have to make a quick adjustment. We will
have to stay healthy in order to allow us to compete with our schedule. We need all 11 players.
STRONG POINTS:
I think our team will be very young and energetic and all the players will be coming from winning
traditions. They know the dedication and sacrifice that goes into winning and I hope this will
carry over and help us get things underway. I also feel like we will be a better shooting team
this year than we have been in the past two seasons. We will have the potential up front to be a
good rebounding team and we must be strong on the boards to get our offense going.
LETTERMEN LOST: (6) George Zumbro (F, 6-6, 16.1 ppg. 6.5 rpg); George Walls (C,
6-10, 14.6 ppg, 11.0 rpg); Len Orr (G, 6-2, 14.2 ppg, 3.1 rpg); Ron Brenning (G, 6-0, 2.2 ppg,
0.7 rpg); Smoky Whitman (F, 6-4, 2.0 ppg, 0.2 rpg); Jim Ludlow (F, 6-8, 2.0 ppg, 1.0 rpg).
LETTERMEN RETURNING:
(4) Robert Harris (F, 6-5, 8.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg); Greg Champlin (F, 6-7, 8.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg); Lyle Wilkins
(G, 6-1, 7.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg); Kim Nelson (F, 6-7, 4.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg).
TOP NEWCOMERS:
(6) Jim Ranson (G, 6-3, 180, Pueblo South H.S., Colo.); Jim Mitchem (F-C, 6-9, 205, St. Pius
H.S., Albuquerque, N.M.); Bob Heaton (F-G, 6-5, 195, Clay City H.S., Indiana); Steve Cribari
(G, 6-3, 180 transfer from Colorado State); Russell Swilley (G, 6-2, 180, transfer from St.
Petersburg, Fla., Junior College); Roosevelt Bankhead (C-F. 6-9, 220, transfer from Pensacola,
Fla., Junior College).
8

Young and inexperienced is not just a cl iche around
the University of Denver basketball camp this season.
The Pioneers will put an 11 man squad on the floor that
will feature two juniors, six sophomores and three freshmen.
There is not a senior on the squad.
But despite the lack of experience, coach AI Harden is
optimistic about the season. He has landed three top
freshmen prospects and two outstanding junior college
players to begin a building program. The junior college
players will have three years of eligibility with Denver.
Harden sees definite improvement in the guard spot this
year as Steve Cribari, a transfer from Colorado State
University, will join veteran Lyle Wilkins. Cribari is one of
the juniors on the squad as he sat out last season as
a red shirt. "I expect Steve to give us some strong leadership
at the guard spot this season. He is the type of player
that can add consistency to our game," Harden explained.
But in addition to Cribari and the returning Wilkins
Harden will also draw from the talent of Jim Ranson and
Russell Swilley. Both are newcomers to Pioneer basketball
and both have that scoring potential from the outside.
Ranson was an outstanding player for Pueblo South High
School last season while Swilley transferred from St.
Petersburg, Fla., Junior College.
One of the most improved areas for the Denver team
looks to be in forward spot. A good nucleus of returning
players will team with several outstanding newcomers.
Greg Champlin, Robert Harris, Kim Nelson, and David
Adkins will supply the experience while Jim Mitchem,
Roosevelt Bankhead and Bob Heaton will be the newcomers.
1975-76 Pioneer Outlook
Champlin was the fourth best scorer last season, tossing
in 8.2 points per game for Denver. He stands 6-7 and is
the other junior "veteran" on the squad. Harris, Nelson
and Adkins will all be sophomores, but their added experience
last season should provide a base on which to
build this year.
One of the brightest finds in the early practice sessions
has been 6-8 Jim Mitchem from Albuquerque, N.M. The
personable freshman has shown some outstanding moves
under the basket which combines with a fine shooting
touch. Jim should also add to the rebounding improvement
of the Pioneers this season.
Bob Heaton was an outstanding player at Clay City
High School in Indiana. He is an outstanding shooter as
he connected on 62 per cent of his shots from the floor
as a senior in high school. He averaged a strong 21.2
points per game last year.
Bankhead will be used as a swing man between center
and forward, but his size and qUickness will be a strong
plus for the Denver squad this year. The 6-9 junior college
transfer looks to be a strong defensive player as well as
being an offensive threat. He led his teams in junior
college and high school in blocked shots and has all
the tools to play both positions.
Both Bankhead and Mitchem will see considerable action
at the post position, although Harden hopes tQ be able to
utilize both men at the same time, one at center, the other
at forward.
So although the Pioneers look to be young and inexperienced,
they should have an improved squad in 1975-76.
Meet the Pioneers
13 DAVID ADKINS, F, 6-6, 185, Soph, 19, Benton
Harbor, Michigan
David makes the move to the varsity this season after
seeing some action at the end of last year. He worked with the
junior varsity through much of last season.
He attended high school at Benton Harbor High where he
was coached by Earl McKee. He earned all-conference
honors in basketball and was the team's most improved
player in 1974. Dave is also an outstanding student as he was
named President of the National Honor Society while in high
school.
He has been nicknamed "Spiderman" because of his
interest in Spiderman comic books. He also counts music
among his interests other than basketball. He has worked as
a disc jockey at both radio stations and at parties. He attends
many movies and also has a collection of basketball pictures.
Has good jumping ability and coach AI Harden sees Dave
strengthening the Pioneers inside game this year. He saw
action in just seven of the Pioneer's 26 games last year, but
was able to collect five baskets in just ten attempts. Looks to
have a good shooting touch in the early Pioneer drills.
He also played on the upstate Michigan all-star team in the
Ann Arbor basketball classic his senior season.
43 ROOSEVELT BANKHEAD, C-F, 6-9,220, Soph, 19,
Charlotte, N.C.
"Rosey" looks to be the big man the Pioneers will need this
season. He joins the Denver squad after a highly successful
high school career and one year at Pensacola, Fla., Junior
College.
He attended North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte
where' he was coached by Everett Pigg. He earned the
school's most valuable player award as a senior and blocked
nine shots in one game to set a new school record.
Rosey was also honored as the school's athlete of the
month during his senior season. He averaged 15 points and
15 rebounds per game during his prep career, but defense
looks to be Rosey's strongest area. He has always been a
strong shot blocker.
At Pensacola, Rosey averaged over 10 rebounds and 14
points per game, but again it was his shot blocking and defensive
ability that played a big part in helping the Pensacola
squad to the state playoffs.
He is an outstanding shooter from the floor, hitting 60 per
cent of his shots during high school and tossing in 53 per cent
of his shots in junior college. He will have three years of
eligibility with the Pioneers as he attended only one year of
junior college.
He enjoys woodworking in his spare time. He works mainly
with furniture, tables and chairs. He also enjoys working with
youngsters and he taught basketball to 9 to 16 year olds at
the YMCA one year.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bankhead of Charlotte,
N.C.
Meet the Pioneers
21 STEVE CRIBARI, G, 6-3, 180, Junior, 21, Wheat
Ridge, Colorado
Steve is a transfer from Colorado State University and sat
out last year as a red shirt. He has looked strong in early
practice sessions and coach AI Harden is expecting Steve to
add stability in the backcourt this year.
He is a graduate of Wheat Ridge High School where he
earned all-conference and all-state honors while averaging
17 points per game. He was coached by Mike Frink. He also
captained the Wheat Ridge squad his senior season.
Steve's team finished second twice in the Colorado state
high school tourney, but he earned himself a spot on the North
team for the annual North-South prep all-star game. He was
named the most valuable player in that game.
He also competed in football and baseball while at Wheat
Ridge. He saw action as a safety in football and earned allconference
honors. His team competed in the state playoff
when he was a junior. In baseball, Steve played all positions
as he earned all-conference honors as a utility player when he
was a senior. He also pitched for the Farmers and posted a 4
1 overall mark during his senior year.
Steve is the son of Paul and Freda Cribari of Wheat Ridge,
Colorado.

Meet the Pioneers
50 ROBERT HARRIS, F, 6-6, 195, Soph, 19, Indianapolis,
Indiana
Robert was a strong freshman performer for the Pioneers
