From thePresidentDear McMurry Alumni and Friends:As I introduce this issue of the Chieftain, I am reminded ofa verse from the book of Isaiah:“Though the Lord gave you adversity for food andaffliction for drink, he will still be with you to teach you.You will see your teacher with yourown eyes, and you will hear a voicesay, “This is the way; turn aroundand walk here.” Isaiah 30:20-21(NLV)No person or institution willinglyseeks out adversity, but most wouldagree that our reaction to adversityhelps define our character andstrengthen our resolve to succeed. And as the verse from Isaiahpromises, we will not be alone. In this Chieftain, you willmeet three individuals—a McMurrystudent, a professor and a longtimecoach—who have faced adversityand come out stronger for theexperience. Whether their battlewas against a physical illness or a lifechanging problem, these individualspersevered through the storm and emerged stronger. We also will be introduced to Dr. David Blackburn, whohelped many of his students overcome difficulties whilehere and prepared them to succeed after moving on fromMcMurry. I think you will be inspired by their stories. The current world economic situation has causedmany individuals and institutions to deal with financialadversity and McMurry University is not exempt fromthese trying economic times. This is not the first time McMurry has faceddifficult trials. Pride of Our Western Prairies, the bookoutlining McMurry’s past, relates a number of instanceswhen McMurry faced difficult times—from the suddenpassing of our first president Dr. J.W. Hunt, to survivingthe Depression years and the loss of students duringWorld War II. But with the help of the McMurry family, the University has always come through the difficultiesstronger than before. McMurry will face and conquer thesetrying economic times as well andwe will come out on the other sidestronger and more prepared for thefuture.Despite the current economicturmoil, McMurry University mustcontinue to fulfill its role amongtoday’s colleges and universities byoffering a unique experience to itsstudents. We accept our challenge toenable McMurry to remain skilled inits mission of educating students andsincere in its passion for nurturing andshaping students. Our efforts today will prepare usas an institution for the 21st century. We will be offering more distinctiveeducational experiences that willprepare our students for a challengingworld. They will have the skills theyneed to gain and apply new knowledge throughout theirlifetimes. The progress that we are making today will havean impact that will span the entire century.I will close with a quote from Dr. Barbara de Angelis:We don’t develop courage by being happy every day. Wedevelop it by surviving difficult times and challengingadversity. With Warm Regards,John H. Russell, President

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that onehas reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcomewhile trying to succeed…” B O O K E R T . W A S H I N G T O Nwas faced with a monumental decision. She could sit outher final jump and avoid worse injury that might eliminateher from individual competition the following week. Or,she could put pain aside as well as her personal dreams, and sacrifice all for her team. With flawless skill andunwavering concentration, she gave the performance ofher life. Her near-perfect effort gave Team USA the goldmedal in the women’s team gymnastics competition—forthe first time in Olympic history. Sacrificing personalgoals for one’s team is the stuff that heroes are made of,and in the pages ahead, you will read of other individualswhose stories epitomize the same courage and personalsacrifice that leads to great accomplishment.Another sports icon, Kurt Warner, was considereda “nobody” before his 1999 season when he eventually ledthe St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl championship. He hadplayed only one year of college football at a small college, but he dreamed of playing in the NFL. He never gave uphis dream, even while living with his parents and workingin a hometown grocery store. His stint in arena footballand then European football only served to deepen hisresolve. The Rams organization decided to take a chanceon this unknown, and his chance at stardom was madepossible after the starting quarterback suffered an injury. In the end, 1999 was a year in which Warner generatedthe second-finest statistical season by a quarterback inNFL history. His perseverance and belief in himself is atrait shared by many achievers, including those showcasedin this issue—individuals who refused to give up in theface of adversity and whose strength of will and purposepropelled them onward and upward. In the annals of track and field, Derek Redmond willalways be remembered for his courageous performancein the 1996 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. In the middleof his 400 meter semi-final race, he fell to the groundin a crumpled heap. With excruciating pain caused by atorn hamstring, he refused to quit. He rose and began tohobble agonizingly to the finish line. Within moments,Redmond’s father jumped out of the stands and made hisway to the track. He draped his arm around his son andwalked with him to the finish line. Through courage, and aremarkable display of teamwork, he inspired millions. Asyou read the stories in this publication, you will sense thesame courage and applaud the selflessness and teamworkof a campus community who has rallied around their own.Whether in athletic competition, artistic expression, scientific discovery, or medical research, we applaudthe “common runner” for grand achievement. Butwhat inspires us and empowers us is their “uncommonrace.” Booker T. Washington once said, “Success is tobe measured not so much by the position that one hasreached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcomewhile trying to succeed…” As you read the pages of thisChieftain, our desire is that you will be inspired to greaterheights and will be reminded that life’s hurdles can eithercause us to fall, or they can most certainly provide us withthe opportunity to soar. •M c M u r r y U n i v e r s i t y 3

During his sophomoreyear, he was playing baseball with friends and his visionbegan to blur. The symptoms persisted, and he wasquickly referred to an ophthalmologist and then to aneurologist. The neurologist found pressure behind hiseyes, a condition known as hydrocephalus. A CT Scanwas performed and John was diagnosed with a braintumor. He was flown to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. While waiting in the Intensive Care Unit, he developed“I can doanythingthat anyoneelse can,but I mighthave to goabout itdifferently.”an aneurysm. Surgery was performed to removethe aneurysm and the fluid behind his eyes. Threemonths after the first surgery, on Christmas Dayin 2005, doctors operated again to remove the tumor. After a successful surgery, he returned to Abilenefor a couple of months and went to the West TexasRehabilitation Center (WTRC) daily to treat for theparalysis on his left side caused by the aneurysm. Inaddition, his rehab helped to build his strength so hewould be able to endure the six weeks of radiation. Helived in an apartment in Dallas and made the daily trek toUT Southwestern for his treatments. His parents, DeonnaGalbraith and Larry Tatum, alternated travel fromAbilene to Dallas to be with him during those treatmentsand in the days following when he became extremely illfrom the radiation.Through the emotional turmoil that was hisconstant companion during those days, John faced hisfears openly and honesty. “I wasn’t really afraid of thetumor. Jimmy Allen ‘75I n 1 9 5 3 , J i m m y A l l e n , a small boy with bigchallenges, forged a relationship with McMurry footballthat would set the course for his life. Forty-seven yearslater, that relationship, combined with his strong faith anda dogged determination to succeed, would be called on tosave his life.Jimmy suffered a brain injury during birth and hasbeen challenged with overcoming Cerebral Palsy sincethat time. He has never walked and has very limited use ofhis arms and hands. Jimmy, now 66, remembers as a smallchild sitting in his yard a few blocks from the campusand looking toward the football field. “My thoughts andmy vision focused on the same point—the rock fencethat enclosed Indian Stadium. I had a dream of somedayentering McMurry.” He had no idea at that time what Godhad planned for him behind that rock wall. When Jimmy was 11 years old he received physicaltherapy at the newly formed West Texas RehabilitationCenter. There he met several members of the McMurryfootball team. Among them were Joe Bill Fox ’56,Billy Atkins ’55 and Elroy Payne ’56. They volunteeredtheir time to help the physical therapists give exercisesand administer physical therapy to the children. Theychauffeured kids to and from treatment and even helpedraise funds to provide wheelchairs and other itemsof equipment needed in their therapy. A strong bonddeveloped between Jimmy and the McMurry players. He soon knew more statistics regarding the McMurryfootball team than most of the coaches did. Years later, that desire to know and analyze McMurry statistics wouldbecome his life’s work.It was at Cooper High School where he receivedhis first opportunity to help coach football. He began asa “whistle blower.” He blew the whistle to start and stopworkout drills. What began with the sound of the whistleon the Cooper football field grew and developed beyondgraduation. After seven years of dedication to those youngmen, Jimmy was inducted into the Cooper Cougars Hallof Fame in 1994.By the fall of 1970 Jimmy entered his first class atwhat was then McMurry College. At that time McMurrywas not wheelchair accessible. Before he could get to theelevator in the building where his class was held, he hadto climb four steps. Each day he had to rely on others tolift him in his wheelchair over the stairs to get into thebuilding. The first semester he took one class—collegealgebra; the second semester—trigonometry and English;and the third semester—he took a full load.Jimmy brought carbon paper to different membersof his class. They used it when they took their notes andshared the copies with him. Because he couldn’t hold apencil in his hand, he had to come up with another wayto do his homework. He used an electric typewriter anda pencil clinched firmly between his teeth. He tediouslylocated and typed each letter by mouth. “I used a lotof correction tape. The computer has made my typingmuch easier!” McMurry professors had to be creative inteaching gifted and challenged students like Jimmy. “Dr.Moore, my biology teacher…took me to his office, put thetest in front of me, turned on a tape recorderand returned to the class. That was one heck of asurprise!”It was fulfilling to have overcome thechallenges of the stairs and the classroom, but8 M c M u r r y U n i v e r s i t y

“A goal starts with a dream.”since his earliest memories as a child,he felt his calling lay beyond therock fence that surrounded IndianStadium. So, in the spring of 1971,mustering all his courage, he pushedhimself in his wheelchair acrosscampus with his right foot to the fieldhouse to speak with head footballcoach, Buddy Fornes. Looking back atthat moment Jimmy said, “It’s funnyA young Jimmy Allen sits with JoeBill Fox ’56 and Billy Atkins ’55he was able to workout. He was veryweak at first but after a few months heincreased in strength and returned to thepicture of health. “If it hadn’t been formy competitive spirit—that was madestronger by McMurry football—and theyoung men who helped me, I don’t knowif I would be here today.”Though physically challenged,Jimmy’s spirit is well intact. Most peoplehow moments of opportunity come racing across ourlives as if wearing track shoes, and if we don’t recognizethem or don’t have enough courage to reach out and seizethem, they’ll be lost forever, and we wouldn’t ever knowwhat we could have become or whose lives we could haveinfluenced.”When asked by Coach Fornes what he wanted todo, Jimmy answered, “I want to work with your widereceivers.” The rest is history. Jimmy began his 30-yearcoaching career as a McMurry Indian. “The equipmentmanager, Bob Patty, would set up my drills and throwto my receivers until the quarterbacks were finishedwith their drills; then one would be sent to me.” It wasthe hardest and most fulfilling work he had ever done. After practice he headed home in his wheelchair, usinghis right foot to push himself two blocks down the streetto his house. At least once a week he made this journeyin the dark. In 1972, the McMurry football team tookup donations from the student body and bought hima three-wheeled electric cart. That cart gave him newindependence—and speed. For the next 28 years that cartbecame his feet, and his right foot was given a rest. When asked, “What does McMurry mean to you?”he answered without hesitation, “My life.” In 2000, Jimmyhad a serious health crisis. His doctor told him he mustfind a way to exercise his legs to reduce swelling. His lifewas literally at stake. His thoughts went immediately tothe pool at McMurry. His dad had taken him there forrecreation years earlier, but his dad had since passed away. For the second time in his life, McMurry football playerswere about to play a major role in Jimmy’s future. For thenext 4 years, McMurry created work-study positions forwith his disability do not live beyond their early 40s. Heattributes his longevity to his real hero, his mother. “Ihave been truly blessed by having my Mom, who alwayshas seen that my needs have been met, while setting agreat Christian example and giving me enough slack totry some things with humility. It made no difference toher if I was handicapped when it came to discipline. Therespect and love that I grew to have for her came fromthat discipline.”If you look in the foyer on the north end of KimbrellArena, you will find the McMurry University AthleticHall of Honor. It pays tribute to great athletes who havecrossed the thresholds of our University. It recognizesoutstanding achievement on and off the field of play. Many of the players who helped Jimmy along the way arehonored there. Hanging between Bernard “Boxie” Weemsand Donnie Ray Cruse, you will find Hall of Honorinductee Jimmy Allen. For Jimmy it was an award that hebegan earning from his sand box at home as he dreamedof what was behind the rock fence that surrounded IndianStadium. “A goal starts with a dream,” Jimmy said. “It willremain just that until a person has enough courage, selfconfidence, desire, determination, and passion to startpursuing his or her dream. At that moment the dreamturns into a goal—you make a ‘self-commitment’ andthen the work begins.” When looking at the pictures of theinductees, they all stand the same height. You see no one’sdisability. You don’t see what challenges they overcame toget on that wall. Dr. David BlackburnA s s t u d e n t s p r o g r e s s through their collegeexperience, many are faced with challenges and struggles.During these challenges they often come in contactwith professors who offer them the encouragement andsupport they need to meet and exceed their goals. Notonly are they encouragers, but these individuals investin the lives of their students and challenge them to besuccessful. This is certainly the case for many alumniof McMurry who were in school in the 1970s and wereinfluenced by Dr. David Blackburn. “David Blackburnwas the focalpoint for whatbecame a verymagical time forthose of us luckyenough to be hisstudents in the70s at McMurryUniversity,”states PatriciaGuinn Rutlandex ’77. Dr.Blackburn, former professorand Chair of Music and Fine Arts at McMurry, passedaway September 28, 2008. After his passing, many formerMcMurry students have taken the time and opportunityto reflect on the profound influence that he had on theirlives.David Blackburn served as the Chair of Music andFine Arts at McMurry from 1973 to 1978. During thisshort tenure, Dr. Blackburn’s influence extended outsidethe classroom. “Dr. B was more than a teacher to many ofus. He was our inspiration, our mentor, and our friend,”says Steve Harter ’78, who currently serves as Ministerof Music and Arts at First United Methodist Church ofColorado Springs, Colorado. Harter first came in contactwith Dr. Blackburn during his senior year in high schoolin the fall of 1973. “I remember being impressed with hisdemeanor and with the ‘aura’ that seemed to surroundhim.” In his first year at McMurry, Dr. Blackburnrevitalized the choral program and turned it into anexciting and vibrant program. According to Harter,“During that year I became convinced that McMurry wasthe right place for me.”Dr. Blackburn recognized that his students had alove for music, and regardless of musical ability, he alwaysbrought out the best in everybody. Derrell Patterson ’77reiterated that point by recalling his own experience: “Dr.Blackburn knew that I loved music, but he recognized thatI did not have good vocal technique.” Through his workwith Dr. Blackburn and also his work with other musicmajors, Derrell’s technique and performance improved.Patterson continues, “Not only did he want to make usbetter vocalists, he wanted us to be successful. He wasable to take a mediocre talent and make that personbelieve he could excel.” Steve Harter also recalls the strongencouragement that Dr. Blackburn provided to him.“Certainly he modeled musical excellence; however, healso taught me to be more self-confident and strong. Aftereach voice lesson, I walked away feeling like I could do somuch more than I ever thought possible.”Not only did Dr. Blackburn challenge individualsto become better, he placed lofty expectations on hischoir. However, according to Derrell Patterson, thoseexpectations did not scare people off. “Those who sangunder him were not discouraged by his huge expectations;rather, we wanted to perform our best.” Patricia GuinnRutland reiterates that point by stating, “He brought ustogether, molded us into a fine choir and instilled thephilosophy of ‘Just Do It’ long before anyone ever heard ofNike.” Randy Stevens ’78 shares the same feeling regardingthe influence that Dr. Blackburn had on him: “Hisinfluence on my life led me to graduate school at IndianaUniversity and later to Texas Tech’s doctoral program. Hemodeled for all of us effective conducting and to alwaysstrive for the highest quality in all that we do.”Under Blackburn’s guidance, the music program, and the choir program in particular, excelled. In additionto the Chanters, another musical performing group wasformed during the Blackburn years called Morning Star. This group specialized in performing hymn arrangements,as well as contemporary and Christian music of the time.During Dr. Blackburn’s tenure at McMurry, Morning10 M c M u r r y U n i v e r s i t y

DEVELOPMENTCORNERT h i s e d i t i o n of the Chieftain is a very special one.It is special because it includes inspirational stories of thetriumphs of McMurry “family members” over adversity. These individuals have positively influenced manyothers despite the challenges they have had to overcome.“Overcoming Life’s Hurdles” is also an appropriate themefor us as a university. The suddenness of the country’seconomic crisis means that McMurry is facing financialobstacles that have not been experienced for decades. There is a picture in my office. The picture is of a golfcourse hole in Arizona with a green fairway that is narrowand surrounded by huge rock formations. The inscriptionon the picture reads: “Great work is not accomplished bystrength, but through perseverance.”Perseverance is an appropriate word to describethe University’s strategic commitment in the face of tougheconomic challenges. McMurry University is overcomingchallenges in continuing to meet student enrollmentgrowth. To date, we have received more fall 2009applications and deposits than ever before. Our recruitmentmessage remains the same—in tough economic times,a college education is the best investment for the future.McMurry will be fiscally responsible in ensuring that allendowed scholarships are awarded while protecting theendowment corpus—a promise that we will keep despiteoverall endowment reductions. Though many of our peerinstitutions are imposing large tuition increases, we willhold tuition to a modest growth to help offset the impact onstudents and parents. Most importantly, we will perseverein our mission to prepare and educate excellent students forthe future. We will persevere in our goal to “shape the future” ofMcMurry students for generations to come by continuingour capital campaign. We have already set new records forcampaign contributions as we near $30 million, but more isto be done. The campaign is targeting projects that have animportant and immediate impact on student education anddevelopment. One of these projects is continuing to buildour endowment. Providing financial assistance for studentscholarships is a great investment opportunity for todayand tomorrow, and in the near future, you will receiveinformation on how groups of alumni are combiningtheir gifts to create endowments to honor or memorializeprofessors from the past. Many of you already support McMurry, and we areproud to recognize you on the following pages for yourgenerosity. We are extremely grateful for your generoussupport this past year. Your contributions have helpedsustain and grow McMurry to a record enrollment and haveplayed an important role in gaining national recognitionfor many of our programs. I hope that you will continue tosupport the University in order to preserve the McMurryexperience that was so special to you in your life’s journey. How else can you help McMurry students perseverein this economic uncertainty? Current Honorees:Dr. Richard Dana Moore, BiologyDr. W. Norton Jones, ChemistryDr. Virgil Bottom, PhysicsDr. Bill Dulin, MathematicsDr. A.C. Sharp, PhysicsDr. Roy Sonntag, ChemistryMr. Roger Ward, PhysicsWall of HonorDr. Gary Wilson, Dean, School of Natural and Computational SciencesAll of us are touched by stories of humble peoplefrom modest backgrounds who go forward todo world-changing things. By our very naturewe are inclined to pull for the underdog, tocheer for the success of those who seem most unlikely.Support, encouragement and hard work go into everysuccess story. Invariably, one other key ingredient alsogoes into their recipe for success – opportunity. Thoughsometimes circumstance itself can provide opportunity, more often than not opportunity is a gift provided by anunselfish individual whose satisfaction comes from helpingothers achieve beyond their dreams. The selfless individuals who have been involved withMcMurry’s science programs have for many years providedexceptional opportunities for our students. Whether it wasDr. Virgil Bottom meeting with students on Saturdays totrain them in the art and science of making quartz crystalsfor electronics, or Dr. Bill Dulin supporting studenttravel to research meetings, or countless other similarstories, our faculty have made a McMurry educationmore than books and tests and glassware and formulas. They have provided life-changing opportunities for ourstudents. The beneficiaries have grown to lead technologyand telecommunications industries around the world,to become outstanding healthcare professionals, and tobecome educators and scientists and citizens who give backin the same way McMurry gave to them. Some exceptional alumni like Roger Ward haveacknowledged the special care that went into theireducation and have given back generously, contributingresources needed to provide those special opportunitiesto a new generation of students. The fruits of theirlabor are students who build turbojets for their seniorprojects, participate in cancer research, build newsoftware applications, develop improved science teachingapproaches for rural schools, and conduct environmentalimpact studies for regional landowners. Opportunitiesseized become opportunities offered.McMurry’s Science and Math Advisory Boardhas established a “Wall of Honor” to share the storiesof pioneers, legends and servants. Located in themain entrance to the Finch-Gray Science Center, theachievements of seven exceptional individuals aredisplayed for all passersby. Many more stories wait tobe told. In November 2009, the number will grow as theAdvisory Board inducts a new class of honorees. You areinvited to submit nominations by visiting the followingweb page: www.mcm.edu/newsite/web/academics/ncs/index.htm. We celebrate the lives of these outstandingindividuals and invite you to join in the celebration of theirachievements and contributions to McMurry’s science andmath programs. •M c M u r r y U n i v e r s i t y 29

ATHLETICSFor the full athletics update, please visit us on the web athttp://athletics.mcm.edu.UPDATEFall BriefsFootball While the 2008 McMurry football campaignwasn’t a success in terms of the win-loss total, it didprovide the future of the program with a lot of experience. Many underclassmen received significant playing time asthe season progressed and that experience could prove tobe essential for getting wins in the future. Two McMurryplayers garnered all-conference recognition in juniors JoeAlexander and Josh Clements. Alexander was a secondteamall-conference selection at linebacker as he finishedfifth in the conference with 78 tackles, and Clementswas an honorable mention all-ASC pick at center afterthe coaches in the conference voted him as one of thetoughest and most consistent offensive linemen in theleague. The great news for McMurry is that both allconferenceplayers are slated to return for the 2009 season!Volleyball Cammie Petree returned at the helm ofthe McMurry volleyball team and the winningest coachin program history guided McMurry to a 19-8 overallmark and an appearance in the American SouthwestConference Championship Tournament. A highlight ofthe season occurred on Sept. 21, 2008, when McMurryswept Concordia Texas to give Petree her 200th victory ashead coach of McMurry. Five players earned all-conferencerecognition. Junior middle blocker Terah Brown won hersecond-consecutive ASC West Division MVP and was alsothe offensive player of the year.SophomoreSarah Anding won the defensiveplayerof the year, while senioroutsidehitter Erica English andseniorsetter Shannon Higginsmade the second team.Junior outsidehitter DanielleKelton wasan honorablemention selection.Cross Country Both the McMurry men’s and women’scross country teams had successful seasons in 2008 asthe men finished second at the conference meet and thewomen finished third. On the women’s side, freshmanAlaisha Guerra garnered ASC Freshman Runner of theYear honors. Karlie Dieterich joined Guerra on the all-ASCfirst team as she placed fourth at the conference meet. Onthe men’s side, McMurry placed four runners on the allconferenceteam. Ken Wheeler, Brad Mullins and DanielRudd were first-team all-conference runners and StevenCantwell was a second-team runner. Wheelerand Mullins later made the all-region teamfor the third-straight year, which set aschool record for the most all-regionteam appearances. Wheeler also wasthe second McMurry runner ever (JoshHufstedler, 1999) to compete in the NCAANational Championship Meet and he had thebest finish at nationals as he finished 153rd out of 280runners with his personal-best time and school record inthe 8,000-meter of 25:54.31.Men’s and Women’s SoccerThe future of the McMurry men’s and women’s soccerprogramsis now under the direction of onecoach asmen’s coach, Tim Grove, added thewomen’s soccer head-coachingresponsibilities to his duties after the2008 season concluded. Both soccerprograms are looking for improvement in2009 and some slated returners to themen’s team could help the McMurry menachieve that. Freshman goalkeeper LeelandKarpf highlighted the group of McMurryall-conference selections as he was one of onlytwo freshmen to make the conference's first team.Sophomore midfielder Nathan Perschke was a thirdteamall-conference selection, while sophomore defenderKyle Kallin was an all-conference honorable mention.Terah Brown
