(188) Thomas Luther <strong>Alford</strong>, son <strong>of</strong> John Turner <strong>Alford</strong>, was born in April 22,1892 in Shelby County, Texas. After his father left in June 1895, Luther, his brother Fred, and his mother,went to live with his maternal grandfather, James Latimour, in Joaquin, Texas (Shelby County). OnOctober 6, 1912, Luther married Georgia Duke (12/14/1893-7/16/1951) <strong>of</strong> Teneha, Texas, in ShelbyCounty. On June 5, 1917 he and his brother, Fred Eugene, registered for the WW1 draft at Joaquin. Hereceived an exemption a "not being able-bodied." Thomas was baptized on August 26, 1917 at Pine RidgeMissionary Baptist Church near Joaquin, where he had joined in August 1916 (from obituary). In 1917,Thomas listed his mother as a dependent. As a young man, Luther found work in the oil fields <strong>of</strong>Louisiana. Luther died on July 1, 1920 in Claiborne Parrish, Louisiana after contracting typhoid feverwhile working at an oil refinery in Minden, Louisiana. At his deathbed were his wife, brother Fred, andhis nurse. He requested that no flowers be sent to his funeral since, "death is so beautiful, a sublimeentrance into life everlasting. It is a mistaken effort to cover it up with a lesser beauty as if it weresomething hideous." His last words were, "I am going to cross over (from obituary)." His wife called him"as pure as a rose." On August 21, 1922, Georgia remarried Thomas Luther Peddy (12/21/1883-7/1965).Thomas Luther <strong>Alford</strong> is buried at Ramah Baptist Church in Shelby County (Teneha), next to his UncleHenry Marion <strong>Alford</strong>. As a member <strong>of</strong> the Jackson Camp <strong>of</strong> the Woodmen <strong>of</strong> the World, he was buriedwith full honors. His tombstone reads: Blessed are the pure <strong>of</strong> Heart." His obituary was written up byClara Ramsay in the Center Champion. Georgia Duke <strong>Alford</strong> Peddy lived and died in Orange (OrangeCounty), Texas.
