Brereton Hall, the property of JohnBrereton Howard esq. and now in the occupation ofJohn Moir esq, was erected about 1586 by Sir WilliamBrereton kt, created in 1624 Baron Brereton of Leighlin,CO. Carlow, a title which is presumed to have becomeextinct in 1722; the house is a handsome mansion ofbrick, pleasantly standing in about 17 acres of w^Uwoodedland, on the east bank of the river Croc: theexisting structure, originally quadrangular, and the foundationstone of which is said to havi' been laid by QueenElizabeth, consists of one side and portions of twoothers : the principal front, which faces westward and hasan embattled parapet, is flanked by gabled wings with tallprojecting bays, three storeys in height, lighted by mullionedwindows : the entr,'ince gateway formerly had twolarge and lofty octangular towers, rising considerablyabove the parapet and connected near their summits by asemi-circular arcb. each tower being finished with anogee-shaped cupola roof with vane; the cupolas of boththese towers, however, were destroyed and an embattledparapet substituted by Mr, John Howard, of Hyde, whopurchased the estate.
