She withdrew her statement dayslater and said it had been fabricated.But Saiid remained in cus<strong>to</strong>dy and,in March, prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs announced that<strong>the</strong>y had found ano<strong>the</strong>r witness <strong>to</strong> saythat he had ex<strong>to</strong>rted m<strong>on</strong>ey—thistime, US$5,000 in a supposed 2004incident, <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong>al news Web siteFerghana reported. Prosecu<strong>to</strong>rs addeda forgery charge based <strong>on</strong> purportedstatements from local farmers sayingthat he had used <strong>the</strong>ir signatures <strong>to</strong>create fraudulent court documents.Before his arrest, <strong>the</strong> journalist hadreported <strong>on</strong> government agriculturalabuses for <strong>the</strong> independent regi<strong>on</strong>alnews Web site Voice of Freedom as wellas a number of local newspapers. Amember of <strong>the</strong> Tashkent-based humanrights group Ezgulik, Saiid had alsoAuthorities in <strong>the</strong> western city of Nukusarrested Abdurakhmanov aftertraffic police claimed <strong>the</strong>y found fourounces (114 grams) of marijuana andless than a quarter ounce (about fivegrams) of opium in his trunk, <strong>the</strong>independent news Web site Uznewsreported. Authorities initially charged<strong>the</strong> journalist with drug possessi<strong>on</strong>intended for pers<strong>on</strong>al use.Abdurakhmanov covered humanrights and ec<strong>on</strong>omic and social issuesfor Uznews and, in <strong>the</strong> past, had reportedfor <strong>the</strong> U.S. government-funded Rahelpedlocal farmers defend <strong>the</strong>ir rightsin regi<strong>on</strong>al courts, sources <strong>to</strong>ld CPJ.Saiid’s lawyer, Ruhiddin Komilov,said <strong>the</strong> proceedings were riddled withprocedural violati<strong>on</strong>s, notably tha<strong>to</strong>fficials failed <strong>to</strong> notify him of hearingdates in <strong>the</strong> case. Human RightsWatch reported that most prosecuti<strong>on</strong>witnesses said <strong>the</strong>ir statements against<strong>the</strong> journalist had been falsified.On July 30, <strong>the</strong> Tailak District Courtin Samarkand c<strong>on</strong>victed Saiid and sentencedhim <strong>to</strong> 12 and a half years inpris<strong>on</strong>, Ferghana reported. The journalistwas sentenced in a closed proceedingwithout his defense lawyer, family, or<strong>the</strong> press in attendance. According <strong>to</strong>Voice of Freedom, Saiid was transferred<strong>to</strong> a strict-regime penal col<strong>on</strong>y outside<strong>the</strong> city of Navoi in central Uzbekistan;<strong>the</strong> pris<strong>on</strong> is known for its large c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>of political pris<strong>on</strong>ers.In November, Saiid’s wife and6-year-old daughter died in a car accidentwhile <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>to</strong> visit himin pris<strong>on</strong>, Ferghana reported.
