The award honors Burton Benjamin, the CBS News seniorproducer and former CPJ chairman who died in 1988. In 2009, CPJ honoredAnthony Lewis.Anthony LewisAnthony Lewis is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the foremostthinkers on freedom of speech and First Amendment rights.In a distinguished career at The New York Times, Lewis served as columnist,bureau chief in London, and reporter in Washington covering the SupremeCourt, the Justice Department, and legal affairs. His coverage of the court wona Pulitzer in 1963. His first Pulitzer, in 1955, came when, as a reporter for theWashington Daily News, he wrote a series of stories on the improper dismissal ofa Navy employee. The articles led tothe employee’s reinstatement.Lewis has been a tireless scholarof journalism, having taught andlectured at the Columbia UniversityGraduate School of Journalism aswell as Harvard University. He is theauthor of five books, including MakeNo Law: The Sullivan Case and theFirst Amendment and Gideon’s Trumpet,which won the Edgar Award in1965. His newest book, Freedom forthe Thought That We Hate: A Biographyof the First Amendment, was publishedin 2008.One of the founding boardmembers of CPJ, Lewis has servedthe organization since its inceptionin 1981.
