In 2009, CPJ h<strong>on</strong>oredAnth<strong>on</strong>y Lewis.Anth<strong>on</strong>y LewisAnth<strong>on</strong>y Lewis is a two-time winner of <strong>the</strong> Pulitzer Prize and <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> foremostthinkers <strong>on</strong> freedom of speech and First Amendment rights.In a distinguished career at The New York Times, Lewis served as columnist,bureau chief in L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>, and reporter in Washingt<strong>on</strong> covering <strong>the</strong> SupremeCourt, <strong>the</strong> Justice Department, and legal affairs. His coverage of <strong>the</strong> court w<strong>on</strong>a Pulitzer in 1963. His first Pulitzer, in 1955, came when, as a reporter for <strong>the</strong>Washingt<strong>on</strong> Daily News, he wrote a series of s<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> improper dismissal ofa Navy employee. The articles led <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> employee’s reinstatement.Lewis has been a tireless scholarof journalism, having taught andlectured at <strong>the</strong> Columbia UniversityGraduate School of Journalism aswell as Harvard University. He is <strong>the</strong>author of five books, including MakeNo Law: The Sullivan Case and <strong>the</strong>First Amendment and Gide<strong>on</strong>’s Trumpet,which w<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Edgar Award in1965. His newest book, Freedom for<strong>the</strong> Thought That We Hate: A Biographyof <strong>the</strong> First Amendment, was publishedin 2008.One of <strong>the</strong> founding boardmembers of CPJ, Lewis has served<strong>the</strong> organizati<strong>on</strong> since its incepti<strong>on</strong>in 1981.
