One reporter is killed, and hundreds aresent a message that certain topics are too dangerous to be discussed. Since 1992,more than 570 journalists have been murdered in direct relation to their work, CPJresearch shows. While hundreds more have died in combat or other dangerouscircumstances, murder is the leadingcause of work-related deaths.In 2009, with the generous supportof the Knight Foundation, CPJ continuedits global campaign against impunity.The initiative focuses primarily onRussia and the Philippines, very differentcountries that share two traits: Theyare among the world’s deadliest nationsfor journalists, and they are among theworst in solving these crimes.CPJ conducted three advocacy missionsto the Philippines in 2009, meetingwith prosecutors, witnesses, localjournalists, and government leaders. InDecember 2009, CPJ joined with other international groups in a mission to offer assistanceto the relatives of the 31 media workers slain in Maguindanao province.In September 2009, a CPJ delegation traveled to Moscow to issue an investigativereport on unsolved journalist killings in Russia, Anatomy of Injustice, andto meet with investigators and government officials.
