<strong>in</strong>telligent” forms, this directive is expressed through patient supremacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>imperial <strong>culture</strong> beam to not talentless natives (“Thanks God, <strong>the</strong>y learned towrite!” – it is approximately how Iosif Brodsky expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> situati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rlySoviet literatures to American colleagues).However, <strong>in</strong> both cases, <strong>the</strong> described situati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> prejudgment results <strong>in</strong>ignor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>digenous literatures/<strong>culture</strong>s as little valuable. It is very difficult toovercome such prejudgment s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> objective value <strong>of</strong> a compositi<strong>on</strong> does notmean anyth<strong>in</strong>g here. It is subjectively low value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very <strong>in</strong>digenous <strong>culture</strong> for<strong>the</strong> recipient that is decisive. They know a priori that <strong>the</strong>re cannot be anyth<strong>in</strong>goutst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>and</strong> thus it is not worth wast<strong>in</strong>g attempts, time, <strong>and</strong> m<strong>on</strong>ey<strong>on</strong> a dubious, little prestigious, <strong>and</strong>, most probably, valueless th<strong>in</strong>g. The essence<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> positi<strong>on</strong> was expressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>on</strong>e lady <strong>in</strong> a bookshop <strong>in</strong> Odesato History <strong>of</strong> Odessa just translated <strong>in</strong>to Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian by <strong>the</strong> Harvard pr<strong>of</strong>essor PatriciaHerlihy. Hav<strong>in</strong>g exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> book <strong>and</strong> sadly sighed, <strong>the</strong> lady put <strong>the</strong> bookback <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> shelve <strong>and</strong> said: “Such a book has been spoilt!..” I should say that <strong>the</strong>publicati<strong>on</strong> was quite high-quality <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> translati<strong>on</strong> was quite pr<strong>of</strong>essi<strong>on</strong>al.But it was not <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t. The publicati<strong>on</strong> was bad a priori – no matter whe<strong>the</strong>r<strong>the</strong> translati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> price, or <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g were acceptable. It was Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>refore noth<strong>in</strong>g else mattered.All this can already lead to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s. Firstly, <strong>the</strong> Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian<strong>culture</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ukra<strong>in</strong>e will still be functi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g as a <strong>culture</strong> <strong>of</strong> a quasi-m<strong>in</strong>ority (<strong>in</strong> bigcities) or quasi-diaspora. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, it will still preserve its declarative“state” status as <strong>the</strong> <strong>culture</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> title nati<strong>on</strong> that largely legitimizes its separate(from Russia) political existence. It means that <strong>the</strong> “nom<strong>in</strong>ally” Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian state willstill support Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian cultural <strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> practices more than any m<strong>in</strong>orityor diaspora would expect. However, this support will be still decreas<strong>in</strong>g – dueto <strong>the</strong> general disfuncti<strong>on</strong>ality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, ec<strong>on</strong>omic decay, total depredati<strong>on</strong><strong>of</strong> resources, <strong>and</strong> less <strong>and</strong> less <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> authorities <strong>in</strong> political legitimizati<strong>on</strong>through <strong>the</strong> <strong>culture</strong> which is separate, mostly unknown, <strong>and</strong> un<strong>in</strong>telligibleto <strong>the</strong>m.Meanwhile, <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, all market mechanisms – <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong>properly Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian bourgeoisie <strong>and</strong> almost omnipresent dom<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> comprador,neo-col<strong>on</strong>ists elites – will support <strong>and</strong> explore <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ority, quasi-diaspora status<strong>of</strong> Ukra<strong>in</strong>ian <strong>culture</strong>. Popular <strong>culture</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ukra<strong>in</strong>e, despite certa<strong>in</strong> local color<strong>in</strong>g,rema<strong>in</strong>s a purely peripheral, prov<strong>in</strong>cial part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> “imperial” <strong>on</strong>e – as it was both20 mykola riabchuk
