2005 Season Final NotesSpartans Set Records In ConferenceVictoriesUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> broke the school record for conferencewins in a season with 14. The Spartans33-21 overall record was the most wins since the1990 squad that went 34-16 in its last season <strong>of</strong>NAIA play. The 33 wins is the most wins sinceUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> moved into the NCAA Division IIranks.Spartans 6-7 Against Top-25 TeamsUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> had an 6-7 record against Top-25 ranked teams in 2005. The Spartans took athree-game sweep over 22nd-ranked ArmstrongAtlantic State, a team that had previously beatenUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> 19 straight times.Spartans Cracked Top-25 Poll During SeasonUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> spent three weeks in the Top-25by Collegiate <strong>Baseball</strong> in 2005. The Spartanscame into the poll as the 18th ranked team in thenation on April 11 after their three-game sweep <strong>of</strong>Armstrong Atlantic State. USC <strong>Upstate</strong> was 21stranked on April 18 and then moved to the 27thspot on April 25.Spartans Ranked Nationally in StatisticsUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> had several players finish inthe Top 100 nationally in statistics. Matt Goyeawas ranked in three different statistical categoriesfor the Spartans. Goyea finished 28th in thenation with a .425 batting average, 35th in toughestto strikeout, and 62nd in doubles per game.Eric Davis was 17th in the nation in triples pergame, 95th in walks, and 96th in runs per game.Bret Hansen finished 6th in the nation in walkswhile John Caddell was not too far behind finishing24th. Kyle Bowley finished 29th in RBIs pergame and Brad Wingo was 14th in the nation insacrifice bunts.From the pitching side, Garrett Holmes finished3rd in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings,tied for 50th in saves, and ranked 60th inthe nation in ERA. Scott Eckard finished 84th inthe nation in ERA while James Dalton finished87th.Spartans Won 10 Games In a RowThe Spartans won a season-high 10 games ina row from April 2-14. Durng that stretch, USC<strong>Upstate</strong> defeated two nationall-ranked teams inArmstrong Atlantic State and Tusculum. Holmes finishedthe season with a 3-1 record and a team-low 2.51ERA. Holmes was tied for the team-lead in saveswith five and led the pitching squad in strikeoutswith 79.Holmes finished fifth in the PBC in ERA (2.51),second in opponents batting average (.192), andninth in strikeouts (79).Holmes finished his career ranked in severalpitching categories. Holmes 2.51 ERA in 2005ranks second on the single-season list. His 79strikeouts was the second highest mark in a singleseasonby a Spartan. His 23 relief appearanceswere good for fourth in a single-season as was hisfive saves. For his career, Holmes ranks third inappearances (68), second in relief appearances(63), tied for third in saves (8), fourth in strikeouts(144), and seventh in ERA (4.63).Garrett Holmes ranks in the top 10 infive single-season statistical categoriesand five career statistical categories.Spartans Break Eight Team RecordsUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> broke eight team records in2005. They broke the mark for at-bats (1,859),triples (27), hit-by-pitches (60), sacrifice bunts(44), innings pitched (462.0), strikeouts (408),shoutouts (5), and putouts (1,386).Spartans Set Records vs. USC Aiken andBloomfieldThe Spartans set two single-game records thisyear in a 15-14 loss at USC Aiken on February 13.USC <strong>Upstate</strong> set the school-record for at-bats(60) and hits by both teams (50). John Caddell,Eric Davis, and Brian Discordia broke the singlegamemark for at-bats with eight apiece versusthe Pacers. The Spartans set a single-game andPBC record <strong>of</strong> 11 doubles in a victory overBloomfield on February 5. Bret Hansen had three<strong>of</strong> those 11 doubles to tie the single-game record.Davis, Discordia Set RecordsEric Davis and Brian Discordia each set singleseasonrecords in 2005. Davis tied the singleseasonrecord for at-bats with 217 while Discordiatied the single-season record for most hit-bypitcheswith 13.Davis Flourishes In Two YearsEric Davis finished <strong>of</strong>f his career at USC<strong>Upstate</strong> in fine fashion. In only two years <strong>of</strong>playing for the Spartans, Davis is among the alltimeleaders <strong>of</strong>fensively. Davis is top 10 in sevensingle-season categories and top 10 in two careercategories. For single-season records, Davis istied for first in at-bats (217), second and seventhin triples (7 and 5), third in extra base hits (32),fourth in total bases (131), and tied for 10th indoubles (17). For his career, Davis is tied forsecond in triples (12), and ninth in hits (138).Spartans Bats Pace Peach BeltThe Spartans had a successful year at theplate, ranking at the top <strong>of</strong> several <strong>of</strong>fensivecategories in the PBC. USC <strong>Upstate</strong> finishedfirst in on-base percentage (.424), runs scored(413), triples (27), and walks (294). The Spartansfinished top five in batting average (.321), sluggingpercentage (.449), hits (596), RBIs (368),and doubles (115).Bowley Provides Power For SpartansKyle Bowley enjoyed a solid freshman seasonbatting .337 with nine homeruns while drivingin 59 runs, good for tops on the team and third inthe league. Bowley’s 59 RBIs is good for seventhon the single-season list.Bowley was also effective as a weekendstarter for the Spartans, going 3-3 with one completegame and a save in 2005.Bowley was named the PBC’s co-Freshman<strong>of</strong> the Year for his outstanding freshman season.Goyea Earns PBC, National HonorsMatt Goyea enjoyed a outstanding junior campaignas he led the team and league with a .425batting average. Goyea was named the PBC All-Conference team at second base in 2005.Goyea earned First-Team <strong>South</strong> Atlantic All-Region honors for the Spartans. Goyea was alsonamed a second-team Rawlings/ABCA All-Americanand a third-team <strong>Baseball</strong> Writers <strong>of</strong> AmericaAll-American. Goyea became just the secondplayer in USC <strong>Upstate</strong> baseball history to be namedan All-American.Eric Davis finished his career at USC<strong>Upstate</strong> in the top 10 <strong>of</strong> seven singleseasonand two career statiscialcategories.Matt Goyea led the PBC in batting andwas named to the All-Conference team.Goyea was also named to the First-TeamAll-Region team and was named an All-American by Rawlings/ABCA and<strong>Baseball</strong> Writers <strong>of</strong> America.25
