100 Inning DonorsOn November 5, 2005,the USC <strong>Upstate</strong> Spartans played their annual 100 inning baseball game. The game is played as a fundraiser inan effort to <strong>of</strong>fset costs for the upcoming season. Each player and coach solicits donations on behalf <strong>of</strong> the program. Our institutions, our academicgoals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality<strong>of</strong> purpose and a commitment to excellencein the classroom and on the playing field.The HistorySince its inception in 1991, the Peach BeltConference has worked tirelessly to become one<strong>of</strong> the elite conferences in NCAA Division II.Now entering its 15th season with 23 nationalchampionships and 20 national finalists, the PBChas accomplished that goal.Starting with only two championships in 1991,in men’s and women’s basketball, the conferencehas expanded to 12 championship sports with theaddition <strong>of</strong> women’s soccer in the fall <strong>of</strong> 2000.The conference traces its roots back to November<strong>of</strong> 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville,SC to form a Division II conference. The ColumbusState golf team took the honor by winning the1992 national crown, the first <strong>of</strong> three golf championshipsthe Cougars won.The 2004-05 season may have been the mostsuccessful yet with two national titles as USCAiken won their second straight golf championshipand Armstrong Atlantic State won the women’stennis national championship. The PBC also hadthe second-place or runner-up in baseball, s<strong>of</strong>tball,men’s tennis, and golf, giving the PBC a firstor second-place in every spring sport the conferencesporsors.The seven charter members <strong>of</strong> the conferencewere Armstrong Atlantic State <strong>Universit</strong>y, ColumbusState <strong>Universit</strong>y, Francis Marion <strong>Universit</strong>y,Georgia College & State <strong>Universit</strong>y, Lander <strong>Universit</strong>y,USC Aiken, and USC <strong>Upstate</strong>. The namePeach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted inJanuary <strong>of</strong> 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conferencein May <strong>of</strong> 2000.Augusta State joined the conference in 1991and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member onJuly 1, 1992. They were followed by KennesawState <strong>Universit</strong>y on July 1, 1994, Clayton College& State <strong>Universit</strong>y on July 1, 1995, and the<strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> North Florida on July 1, 1997.Kennesaw State and North Florida departed forthe Division I ranks in 2005 and the conferencewelcomed North Georgia College & State <strong>Universit</strong>yas its 11th member in the fall <strong>of</strong> 2005.Former Augusta State basketball coach andathletic director Marvin Vanover was named theinterim commissioner in April, 1990, and served inthat capacity until his appointment as theconference’s first full-time commissioner in July<strong>of</strong> 1991.Dr. Daniel Ball, president <strong>of</strong> Lander<strong>Universit</strong>y,is the president <strong>of</strong> the Peach Belt in2005-06.The conference currently holds championshipsin 12 sports, six for men and six for women.
