Stockwell, Ph.D., is the second chancellor in the history <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>Upstate</strong>.Prior to assuming this position in the summer <strong>of</strong> 1994, Stockwell servedas provost and vice chancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-Parkside andas interim chancellor <strong>of</strong> that same institution. In earlier years, he served asdean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences at the State <strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> New York(Cortland); as chair and pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Speech and Theatreat Indiana State <strong>Universit</strong>y; and as pr<strong>of</strong>essor and director <strong>of</strong> theatre atCalifornia State <strong>Universit</strong>y-Northridge.Chancellor Stockwell earned his Ph.D. in theatre at Bowling Green State<strong>Universit</strong>y in 1994, Stockwell served as provost and vice chancellor <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-Parkside and as interim chancellor <strong>of</strong> that sameinstitution. In earlier years, he served as dean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Arts andSciences at the State <strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong> New York (Cortland); as chair andpr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Speech and Theatre at Indiana State <strong>Universit</strong>y;and as pr<strong>of</strong>essor and director <strong>of</strong> theatre at California State <strong>Universit</strong>y-Northridge.Chancellor Stockwell earned his Ph.D. in theatre at Bowling Green State<strong>Universit</strong>y in 1970, where he studied directing and performance theory. Hehas directed over 50 theatre productions during his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career, andhas written numerous articles on theatre issues. In addition, he has actedand directed pr<strong>of</strong>essionally from time to time.He is an alumnus <strong>of</strong> the Harvard <strong>Universit</strong>y Institute for EducationalManagement and a specialist in strategic planning in higher education. Hiswork is widely known among institutions <strong>of</strong> this kind around the nation.He is a member <strong>of</strong> the United Way <strong>of</strong> the Piedmont Board <strong>of</strong> Directors,the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Foundation Heart Board, and theBoard <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> the Spartanburg Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce and theSpartanburg Development Council.Stockwell and his wife, Diane Vecchio, a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> history and women’sstudies at Furman <strong>Universit</strong>y, have four children; Benjamin, Kelsea, Adrien,and Cory.Mike Hall is in his 12th year as the athletics director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Universit</strong>y <strong>of</strong><strong>South</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> <strong>Upstate</strong>.Since joining the Spartans program, Hall has been instrumental in makingmany improvements in the athletics department. He has recently overseenthe completion <strong>of</strong> the new Louis P. Howell Athletics Complex that alreadyclaims one <strong>of</strong> the top soccer and s<strong>of</strong>tball facilities in the <strong>South</strong>east. TheCleveland S. Harley <strong>Baseball</strong> Park is the newest jewel <strong>of</strong> the complex and thetennis facility has recently been upgraded with six additional tennis courtsand a clubhouse. The total cost <strong>of</strong> the four projects exceeded $5 million. In1999-2000, Hall assisted with a $2 million renovation to the G. B. HodgeCenter. The renovations included a hospitality suite overlooking the gymnasium,concession area, weight room, <strong>of</strong>ficial’s locker rooms and <strong>of</strong>fices forthe athletic staff and coaches. In 2003, the men’s and women’s basketballand volleyball locker rooms were renovated.Hall was instrumental in the development <strong>of</strong> the new County <strong>Universit</strong>ySoccer Stadium, which opened in August <strong>of</strong> 2001, as well as five othersoccer fields that are used by Spartanburg County as youth soccer facilities.County <strong>Universit</strong>y Soccer Stadium, built at a cost <strong>of</strong> $850,000, is thehome <strong>of</strong> the men’s soccer program,now in its fifth year <strong>of</strong> existence. Hallplans to use the facility to attract state and regional youth soccer events aswell as the NCAA Championships.Hall continues to work to enhance staff and coaching positions at USC<strong>Upstate</strong>. He has upgraded many positions from part-time to full-time andexpanded several assistant coaches’ positions. He also continues to coordinate20 corporate sponsors for USC <strong>Upstate</strong> athletics. He continues to leadUSC <strong>Upstate</strong> athletics with its annual athletics auction, now in its tenth yearthat has raised over $285,000 to benefit the overall athletics department.Also, USC <strong>Upstate</strong> athletics has received high marks in its efforts toachieve equity in funding <strong>of</strong> its women’s program and was awarded theTapestry Diversity Award for its efforts in promoting positive interaction andcollaboration among all members <strong>of</strong> the campus community.During his time as athletic director, USC <strong>Upstate</strong> has been awarded theNCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s National Cross Country Championshipin 1995, the NCAA <strong>South</strong> Atlantic Regional Men’s Basketball Tournamentin 1998 and the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship in 1995 and1998. The athletic department also captured its fourth Peach Belt ConferenceCommissioner’s Cup Trophy that is presented annually to the institutionwith the best all-around program in the PBC. The German Olympic men’sgymnastic team was also the guest <strong>of</strong> USCS in the summer <strong>of</strong> 1995.Hall is in his final year <strong>of</strong> a four-year term on the NCAA Division II Men’sBasketball Committee, serving as the Chair <strong>of</strong> the <strong>South</strong> Atlantic Region. Heis in his second year as the Chair <strong>of</strong> the National Committee. As Chair <strong>of</strong> theNational Committee, he oversees site selections for future NCAA Division IINational Championships for men’s basketball, the selection <strong>of</strong> the teams forthe NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament, and coordinates rankingswithin the <strong>South</strong> Atlantic Region. Active in the Spartanburg community, Hallhas also served as the Vice Chair <strong>of</strong> the Spartanburg Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce- Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Marketing and Communication, chairman<strong>of</strong> Team Spartanburg, and the planning committee for the 2001 PanAmerican Games for the Blind that was held in Spartanburg. In addition, heis the co-chairman <strong>of</strong> the International Challenge Cup golf event benefitingMobile Meals. He also served as President <strong>of</strong> the Spartanburg Lion’s Club in2001.A 1981 graduate <strong>of</strong> Liberty <strong>Universit</strong>y, he worked for thirteen years asassistant athletic director for academics, compliance, and golf coach at hisalma mater. He also served as the Director <strong>of</strong> the Adult Education programin admissions and advising. He earned his master’s degree in educationfrom Lynchburg College.Hall and his wife Phyllis, a 1982 Liberty graduate, have three daughters;Mary, Mandy, and Courtney.59
