4 | Post-war boom (1945-1960)<br />
In October <strong>of</strong> 1949, Architectural Forum magazine<br />
published a special issue dedicated to school design that<br />
included articles about acoustics, lighting, heating <strong>and</strong><br />
ventilating, <strong>and</strong> many more aspects <strong>of</strong> school design.<br />
Many architectural magazines published similar issues<br />
covering the explosion <strong>of</strong> school construction, comment-<br />
ing similarly on the exciting <strong>and</strong> daunting task ahead. In<br />
the introduction to the Architectural Forum issue, the editor<br />
notes, “Children, not tanks, planes or bombs- were the<br />
greatest output <strong>of</strong> the U.S. during World War II. These<br />
war babies, seven million <strong>of</strong> them, began hitting the fi rst<br />
grade last year, have taxed every school facility, are<br />
