Wise CountyMessengerThursday, Aug. 27page 34FootballPreview2009New coach, quarterback hope to continue ...Continued from page 19horse.Four senior running backs are listedon the Texans’ roster, which is aplus for Patterson, but none of themhave had any real varsity experience.Casey Jones, Tristan Ceasar,Chris Young and Kerry Harris allhave a chance to win the startingposition, but none have been able tobreak away from the pack thus farin practice. Patterson hopes that thecompetition will make whoever doesemerge as the starter much better.“The competition should makethese guys better,” Patterson said.“Each day they have to come topractice ready to work as hard asthey can to try and win that startingjob.”Whoever wins the starting job willhave a solid group of offensive linemen, led by returning tackle BenCollins (6-3, 245 pounds), blockingfor them. Seniors David Range, JasonInderlied, Colton Roelofs, JohnScholler and a large group of othersbring depth and experience to theline that will drive Patterson’s offense. If the Texans struggle running theball, they can fall back on a group ofwide receivers that may be the mosttalented in the Metroplex. SeniorChris Bain (5-7, 150 pounds) leadsthe way for this group. He is almostimpossible to cover in the slot. Nextto him, standouts Cameron Langer,Eric Clinton and Kevin Meek willprovide any quarterback with multipletargets that can be downfieldthreats. Clinton, a senior, had themost catches for the Texans lastyear (49) for more than 500 yards.Defensively, Patterson is as muchabout stopping the run as he isabout running the ball on offense. Most of the time, he said the Texanswill stack as many as nine playersin the box and force teams to beatthem through the air. For that to besuccessful, Patterson will have torely on a group of experienced andtalented linebackers.Seniors Anthony Chiofalo andEthan Armor will anchor the defenseat linebacker, providing leadershipand experience. Chiofalo wasthe Texans’ leading tackler last yearwith 81 and had three sacks. JuniorChad Wampler has also showedflashes of brilliance during fall practice.Adding depth to the linebackergroup will be senior J.D. Hake, juniorsJeff Stevens and Parker Hatleyand sophomore standout TylerMoore. The defensive line should be justas solid as the linebackers. Nosetackle Ubaldo Arriaga is going tobe the leader in the trenches, alongwith seniors William Tucker, AndrewThrasher, Daniel Lumbantobingand Trent Thompson. JuniorsDylan Dykes, Jared Cook, CaseyCrone, Shane King and ChristianGonzales should also contribute. The Texans’ secondary is anotherspot Patterson feels is a littleshaky.“The secondary is a little youngand more of a question mark,” Pattersonsaid. “We have a safety spotand a corner spot completely up forgrabs right now, and a bunch of guysare working hard competing for it.”Defensive backs Armor and ColeEdwards will be two bright spots forthe Texans in the secondary, however.Edwards was moved over fromreceiver, and Patterson said he hasseen some good things out of the receiver.Armor is listed as an outsidelinebacker on the Texans’ rosterbut could see time in the defensivebackfield. The Texans have a tough non-districtschedule and will have theirhands full with district 5-5A, as willthe rest of the teams. If Pattersoncan find some leaders at both therunning back and safety positions,Northwest should be heading backto the playoffs this fall.THEY’VE GOT SPIRIT,YES THEY DO — The2009-10 NorthwestHigh School varsitycheerleaders areCasey Applegate,Stephanie Aslinger,Kemi Campbell, AshleyDay, Kristi Epperson,Kassidy Free, SadieGolden, MorganRansleben, WhitneyRedman, Bailey Shank,Haley Simmons, KylieThomas, LindseyThomas, ShaynaTomlinson, LaurenWatson, NatalieWatters and MakenzieWitt.
9-2A District PreviewJacksboro TigersLast year’s record:6-5, 4-1 in districtReturning lettermen: 10Offensive starters: 2Defensive starters: 1The Tigers made the most of all oftheir veterans last year en route toupsetting Boyd and advancing to thestate playoffs. However, making the playoffs thisyear will require a lot of improvementfrom a lot of new faces as Jacksborolost 19 of its 22 starters. To makethings even more interesting, theteam has only 50 players to dividebetween varsity and JV teams. The only two starters back onoffense are likely the two best athleteson the team. Senior linemanTyler Batey (6-2, 275) is one of thebest in District 9-2A and will be theleader of a line that will be small andinexperienced. The good news for the Tigers isthat the offense will be guided byone of the area’s top quarterbacksin Kole Weldon (6-3, 220). The senioris the leading returning passerin the district as he threw for 1,277yards and seven touchdowns.Every other position on offenseis up for grabs. Likely to take overat running back for Logan Gunter isjunior Casey Pierce. The rest of the spread offense hasnot been decided as all the receivershave to be replaced with a thintalent pool.Defensively, the only returningstarter is linebacker Rowdy Thomas. The 5-11, 210-pound senior has 4.9speed and will be the featured playeron a young defense.Millsap BulldogsLast year’s record:5-5, 1-4 in districtReturning lettermen: 15Offensive starters: 7Defensive starters: 7The Bulldogs ended five years offrustration in 2008 by posting theirfirst winning season. They have plentyof reasons to expect to be evenbetter this year as seven startersare back on each side of the ball. The biggest difference last yearwas big improvement on offensewhere Trey Matthews starred atquarterback. Although he graduated, the Bulldogs feel like theywon’t miss a beat as Zeb Littlefieldis slated to take over under center. The sophomore has a good arm, andhe can run with the ball. The running back spot is in goodhands as junior Mat Callan (5-10,175) will be back in the saddle afterrunning for 590 yards and seventouchdowns last season. SeniorChris Hicks will move around on offenseas he lines up in the backfieldas well as at the receiver spot wherehe had 405 yards in the air a yearago. The Bulldogs will have to findmore receivers to complement thepassing game if they want to bein the playoff hunt in the final twoweeks of the season. The offensive line has two talentedplayers back in junior Kyle Gooch(6-2, 230) and Daymen Hinrichs (6-1, 225) but must find another tackleand a center to make things easierfor Littlefield and Callan.DHSProudly SupportsProudly SupportsAll l DecaturAthletic ProgramsWe Support Eachand Every One ofOur Wise CountyTeams!940-627-5343800 A Medical Ctr.
