In March2006, Ahuna and Tinnesz presented “Developing Autonomous Learners: Helping Students Succeedin College” at the Spring Teaching and Learning Conference at <strong>UB</strong>, and in June 2006 they willconduct a workshop for faculty at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. In May 2006,Tinnesz and MOI teaching assistant Kristen Cercone (CSEP doctoral student) will present a paperon student learning at the SUNY Geneseo Teaching and Learning Conference.Sharon Amos (Ed.M., 1986, LAI) completed her doctoral program in American studies at <strong>UB</strong> inSeptember 2005. Amos is an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor for <strong>UB</strong>’s <strong>Education</strong>al Opportunity Center.Nancy Bailey (LAI doctoral student) received a 2006 <strong>Graduate</strong> Student Excellence in TeachingAward and Zaynab Alnakeeb (LAI doctoral student) received a Certificate <strong>of</strong> Honorable Mention inthis year’s awards competition. The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> and the <strong>Graduate</strong> Student Associationestablished the “<strong>Graduate</strong> Student Excellence in Teaching” Awards Program to publicly recognizethose graduate students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in the execution <strong>of</strong> theirteaching responsibilities.Ruth Berry (LAI faculty) was awarded $3,360 from the Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher LeaveProgram to prepare manuscripts for publication and to develop an application for external fundingfor research.Gary Bonvillian (Ph.D., 1993, ELP) has been named the 13 th president <strong>of</strong> Thomas University, aprivate institution in Thomasville, GA. The university, founded in 1950, serves 800 students withan academic emphasis on career development and arts and sciences. Previously, Bonvillian served asprovost at Keuka College in Keuka Park, NY.Peter Brouwer (Ph.D., 1993, LAI) was promoted to the rank <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> secondary mathematicseducation at the State University <strong>of</strong> New York College at Potsdam.Joaquin Carbonara (Gifted Math Program faculty) is one <strong>of</strong> 60 teachers selected nationwide for aprestigious Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished Junior High <strong>School</strong> Mathematics Teachingfrom the Mathematics Association <strong>of</strong> America. Carbonara is being honored for his consistentexcellent effort in developing the mathematical talents <strong>of</strong> junior high school students in GSE’sGifted Math Program.
18Marilyn Ciancio (Ed.M., 1982, LAI) received the Arts Advocate Award in March 2006 from theArts Council in Buffalo and Erie County as “Outstanding Supporter and Advocate <strong>of</strong> the Arts.”Ciancio has long championed the arts through her broadcasts on Adelphia’s local cable televisonchannels in Western New York. As ArtScope host for more than 10 years and Crossroads artscorrespondent, she has invited virtually every arts and cultural organization to appear on these twoAdelphia programs. She also records arts events such as Curtain Up! for broadcast, “creating evengreater awareness <strong>of</strong> the richness <strong>of</strong> the arts in our region,” the Arts Council said. In addition,Ciancio has volunteered for more than 30 years for groups including Studio Arena Theatre, <strong>UB</strong>Center for the Arts, Amherst Arts Committee, WNED-TV, and the Women’s Pavilion <strong>of</strong> the 2001Pam-Am Centennial.Nancy Cich (Ed.M., 1992, LAI) is currently teaching 5 th grade and is the elementary sciencecurriculum facilitator in the Newfane Central <strong>School</strong>s.Cornelius Cosgrove (Ph.D., 1986, LAI) is currently serving as chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong>English at Slippery Rock University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. In April 2006, he and department colleagueNancy Barta-Smith received the Slippery Rock University President's Award for Excellence inScholarly Achievement for their 2004 book, In Search <strong>of</strong> Eloquence: Cross-Disciplinary Conversationson the Role <strong>of</strong> Writing in Undergraduate <strong>Education</strong> (Hampton Press).Janice DeLucia-Waack (CSEP faculty) has been elected president <strong>of</strong> the Association for Specialistsin Group Work. Her term as president-elect will begin July 2006.Anne Deming (Ph.D., 1977, CSEP) retired from the presidency <strong>of</strong> Notre Dame College in Ohio in2003 and founded Anne Deming & Associates, a higher education consulting firm that servespresidents, chancellors, and trustees <strong>of</strong> colleges and universities. Deming has partnered with R. H.Perry & Associates, an executive search firm in Washington, DC, on searches for presidents andsenior <strong>of</strong>ficers. She is also a member <strong>of</strong> the Registry <strong>of</strong> College and University Presidents, whichplaces interim presidents.John Donovan (Ph.D., 2002, LAI) is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> mathematics education at theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Maine. He is interested in a problem solving approach to teaching mathematics, andthe mathematics that teachers need to know to be effective teachers.Rodney Doran (pr<strong>of</strong>essor emeritus, LAI) helped organize the 20 th annual Science Exploration Dayon March 15, 2006 on the <strong>UB</strong> North Campus. Approximately 700 high school students from acrossWestern New York attended the event to learn more about science and scientific careers. This year’skeynote speaker was Robert McClellan, a technologist with Praxair. Science Exploration Day issponsored by the Niagara Frontier Science Supervisors Association and the Science TeachersAssociation <strong>of</strong> New York State. Doran was on the committee that started the event more than 20years ago to interest high school students in science.Jutta Siefert Dudley (Ph.D., 1998, LAI) is an instructor in the Department <strong>of</strong> Geology at BrockportState College, and previously taught Regents earth science in the Pittsford <strong>School</strong> District. She iscurrently president elect <strong>of</strong> the Science Teachers Association <strong>of</strong> New York State (STANYS). Dudleyhas also served as chair <strong>of</strong> the Central Western section <strong>of</strong> STANYS, and has held many otherpositions at the section and state level. STANYS is one <strong>of</strong> the largest state organizations <strong>of</strong> scienceteachers with over 3,000 members.
