Since the changes weremade you basically can’t evenpull out of your office block becausethe road is full of traffic.”He added: “I would havethought that somewhere alongthe way, some part of the estatewould benefit but based on theamount of problems aroundhere I can’t see what part of theestate this is benefiting. Morepeople are discommoded by itthan those who benefit from it,of that there is no doubt.”In addition, Mr Columbsaid that other feeder roads offBlackthorn Road outside theindustrial estate such as CarmenhallRoad have beenclogged with traffic since thechanges were implemented.Southside People has alsoseen an email sent by anotherworker which backs up the concernswhich Mr Columbraised.“I work on Ballymoss Roadand it too has been a nightmareto get home every evening,”this email reads. “I have tochoose between taking a rightor left hand turn at the top ofthe road which becomes an insignificantchoice when bothare at a standstill.”Another worker in the estateemailed the council, saying:“Please, please, please putit back the way it was. After avery long day at work the lastthing I want to do is spend 20minutes getting out of the estate.“A spokesperson for thecouncil said it completed anumber of improvements toroad surfacing and accessibilitymeasures for pedestrians andcyclists, as well as upgrading anumber of signalised trafficjunctions into and within theSandyford Business Park.He said these modificationswere based on the mobilitypolicies outlined in the DunLaoghaire Rathdown CountyDevelopment Plan 2010 – 2016and in the Sandyford UrbanFramework Plan 2011 – 2016.“They aim to alter the industrialappearance of the estateto a business park and indoing so, introduce more sustainabletransport and mobilitymeasures,” the spokespersonsaid.“Like all works undertakenby the traffic section, post-constructionmonitoring is ongoingto measure the effects of thesechanges and possible modificationswhich would alleviate thecurrent problems are being considered.”to advertisephone8621611Selfless teens donatebirthday proceeds to charityTWO Southside teens have beenpraised for thinking of others in thecommunity after they donated theproceeds from a joint 18th birthdayto charity.Alice Quinn and Fred Garvey askedguests who were all their own age to make adonation to Blackrock Hospice. 14 motoring● Mii, Mii, Mii!This Seat is a neat two-door city carIT’S NO secret in motoring circles that the Volkswagen group were nothappy that their Up! didn’t win or even make the shortlist for the IrishContinental Car of the Year awards. Are we Irish so fussy that the WorldCar of the Year cannot even make it onto the Irish short list? There could be a simple answer. TheVW group has produced three small carsall based on the same platform, the VWUp! The Skoda Citigo and this week’s testcar the Seat Mii.Obviously the votes were spreadaround; it’s a bit like putting three candidatesfrom the same party into a smallconstituency at general election time.I drove the Up! earlier in the year andit was really cute. You will be able to readabout the Citigo on these pages nextmonth, but this week I’m focussing on thestrangely named Seat Mii, which is theleast expensive of the trio.Seat certainly grab your attention withtheir car colours; a few weeks back Idrove a green coloured Ibiza and thisweek the Mii was a bright yellow. It’s acolour that might not be everyone’s ‘cupof tea’ but it will certainly get you attentionin your local supermarket car park.by Sean CreedonIf you don’t fancy sunflower yellow, youcould opt for something ‘safer’ like black, red or silver, which is still the number onecolour for Irish motorists. This is a neat two-door city car. Externallyit looks cute, almost toy-like, butinside there is a surprising amount ofspace. There is plenty of head and legroom and it can take four adults or maybetwo adults plus three children in the back.I drove the Chic level where the frontwindows are electric, but if you opt forthe basic version the windows are manual. No doors at the back and the rearwindows don’t open. You also get a touchof the sunflower yellow in what is alreadya very bright interior. The boot is narrow, but very deepwhich means you can carry a lot of luggageor shopping and at the bottom thereis a full-size spare wheel. It really is a citycar, but I also found it comfortable on along drive. There are no fans of two-doorcars in our house, but this time there wereno complaints as the Mii was such a funcar to look at and to drive.I think this 1.0 litre car would be attractiveto singletons who thinking aboutbuying their first car. It might also be ofinterest to empty nesters, who might prefera new car rather than getting NCTtests every two years on an older car. Idealfor city driving, you can park in the tightestspots, and you can turn on the proverbialsixpence.Prices start at €9,895 for the basicmodel, while the Chic version I drove willcost you €11,350. There is also a sportversion where prices start at €11,550. Iread recently that an automatic version isnow available in the UK, but I don’t knowif the automatic will be available here. Anautomatic would push up the price and Ithink this car will be attractive to peoplewith tight budgets, who will enjoy workingthrough the five manual gears. No complaints from me this time, thiscar will go forever on a full tank of petroland I think the Mii is a great addition towhat is now becoming an impressiverange of Seat cars.9 JANUARY 2013. 21 southsideEducationNamed after the Roman God Janus,January is that time of the year when weboth look back over the past year andmake plans for the future. As anotherwonderfully successful year for HappyDays School of Performing Arts ends anew one begins. And thinking of Janus, the god of new beginnings andtransitions brings to mind the manydecisions that parents must make at thisbusy time of the year, to give theirchildren the best start in their journeyahead.Happy Days aims to develop students’confidence and creativity in a fun and safeenvironment. Their classes give students theability to express themselves in a clear andconfident manner in all social situations. AsDirector of Happy Days, Gráinne O’RourkeLGSM LLSM ARIAM, Vice President of theSpeech and Drama Teachers of Ireland andan examiner with the Royal Irish Academy ofMusic says, “what they enjoy learning in ourfun filled classes today, they use to gain acompetitive edge in the jobs markettomorrow!”Looking back on 2012, the news that“Pentecost”, a light hearted short film, wasnominated for an Oscar was just one of themany highlights for Happy Days School ofPerforming Arts. “Pentecost” featured 12Happy Days students including Sophie ByrneCarter, Andrew Clayton, Mathew Donohoeand Aaron Nestor from Tallaght and EmilyCharles, Claire Farley and Gillian Kenny fromBlessington.A very busy 2012 saw Happy Daysstudents in many other productions. Theyranged from the multi award winning RTEseries “Love/Hate” and “Raw” to RTEjr’s“Beo Show”, from the ITV mini Series“Titanic” to the BBC’s “Loving Miss Hato”and in TV advertisements from those forAldi, Supervalue and Lidl to UPC.Happy Days students’ great professionalattitude and talent means they are asked toappear again and again in many differentproductions. This year the students wereinvited once more to perform in the DSCC’s“Noise Moves Arts Festival” and in theNational Cultural Night celebrations. Theywere also invited to perform for the LordMayors of Dublin City and South CountyDublin in Wood Quay for the launch of theYouth Arts Map website YAM.ie.Happy Days offer fun-filled classes inSpeech and Drama, Dance, Musical Theatreand Singing from fully-qualified,enthusiastic and encouraging teachers. Andwith all the successes in 2012, they havehad lots of interest and an increase indemand for places in the school. The show incorporatedeverything the students love about HappyDays, with selections from old and newmusicals such as “Mary Poppins”, “LegallyBlonde”, “My Fair Lady”, “Shrek”, “We WillRock You” and “Grease”. Lucy summed it upafterwards saying “we’re like one big happyfamily!” This show can be added to the longlist of performances students have beenpart of including full productions of “TheWizard of Oz”, and “Oliver”.Rebecca O’Connor, now in DCU, who hasbeen with Happy Days since she was four, afinalist in the Leinster School of Music andDrama Excellence award and who wasrecently filmed for RTE’s “The Intern”,summed up what Happy Days has given her.“On my first day I was glued to my Mam’s9 JANUARY 2013. Goingto the classes is a joy, the teachers are socreative, the other students are fantasticand the glimpses of magic every time astudent performs, makes it all worthwhile!”Happy Days student Hana Kelly at justnine years of age followed up herwonderful singing performance with JulieFeeney on RTE in November, by performingas a soloist in the National Concert Hall atChristmas, in the well-loved Christmas show“The Snowman”.While no denying Hana’s hard work, dedication and talent her family haveemphasised their appreciation for all theopportunities Happy Days have given Hanaand all they have done to nurture anddevelop her star qualities. As 2012 ends and a new year begins,Hana can now look back on her many otherperformances such as in the Hallmark movie“Three Wise Women” with Amy Huberman,a number of TV advertisements, and onstage both as a soloist and with otherHappy Days students in their many shows. So in 2013 to “Give your child theconfident edge” as their motto goes anddiscover more about their classes for girlsand boys from age 4 and up, visitwww.happydaysdrama.ie or call or textGrainne on 087 679 5470.Dorset College Dublin“Excellence Through Life Long Learning”Childcare & Montessori StudiesEarly Childhood Care & Education L6 (ECCE & Montessori)Early Childhood Care & Education L6 (Supervision)Special Needs Assisting L5Applied Behavioural Analysis L5:- Understanding Challenging BehaviourNursing & Healthcare Studies (Level 5)Nursing StudiesHealthcare Support CertificateCertificate in Counselling & PsychotherapyMaternity Support CareComputers & Information TechnologyCloud Certified Professional (CCP) programOracle JAVA Associate SE 6 / SE 7Oracle JAVA Professional, JAVA SE 6 ProgrammerDigital MarketingCompTIA A+ / IT Essentials-PC Hardware & SoftwareCISCO – CCNA Computer Network AssociateECDL-European Computer Driving LicenceMultimedia (Level 5)Game Analysis DesignComputer 3D Modelling & AnimationAnimationCareer FocusedCourses…Excellent Career& AcademicProgressionClasses:Tallaght,Blessington,Swords,Lusk &Ballybougalacting/speech& dramacastingagencysingingdancingLaw & Forensic PsychologyCybercrime & Network Security Level 5Diploma in Criminalistics & Forensic Psychology Level 5Business & ManagementCIPD Diploma in Human Resource ManagementPMI Diploma in Project Management - Preparation for CAPM® or PMP® Certification from the PMIwww.dorset-college.ie Tel: 01-8611111ESTABLISHED OVER 15 YEARS WITH FULLY QUALIFIEDENTHUSIASTIC ENCOURAGING WELL TRAINED STAFFGive your child the confident edge!Call or text 087 679 5470 or visit:www.happydaysdrama.ie
