The younger generation were simplytoo classy for the old, out-of-fuel 'older generation' of graduates. It was theA-team of the 2008 graduates (pictured above) which took out the first placeand was rewarded with the grand prize of $300.00. Trailing it in secondplace was the high-spirited, yet at times, highly emotional 2007 graduates’team. It was awarded with the total prize money of $200.00, giving teammembers much to celebrate and elevating further their emotions which ranthrough their veins both on and off the pitch.(Continued on Page 4)

Dear Parents and Students,Principal's MessageIt is hard to believe that we have already completed the first half of the 2009 school year. I amsure our Year 7s and other new students have settled in well and are now ready to build ontheir potential in semester 2. A vast majority of students were pleased with their semester 1reports, but others, however, may need to review their study habits in order to achieve betterresults this semester; particularly our Year 10s as they will need to choose their subject andcourse preferences for next year (i.e. VCE/VCAL/VCE at another school/TAFE/Trade optionsat the end of the year etc.). During the last school holidays, and over the last week or two, ourschool administration has been holding interviews with parents of students who areexperiencing difficulties. This is so that we can better manage these students' immediatefutures.“A vast majority ofstudents were pleasedwith their semester 1reports”“Term 3 is an excellenttime for students toidentify their weaknessesand to work emphaticallyto overcome these”“I once again find myselfdeeply thanking God forhaving inspired me tobecome a teacher”“Emre Akgoz is one ofthose rare students able toachieve a perfect score ina VCE subject”“Anil Zirek awarded firstplace in the University ofMelbourne's Kwong LeeDow Young ScholarProgram”Although VCE midyear exams kept our Year 12 students busy and too preoccupied toconcern themselves with other subjects, they did try 'tuning up' their studies during a camp atCreswick in the term break. Some of them attended a family pastoral care camp at Lorne andstudied further. Just a crucial reminder that Term 3 is an excellent time for students to identifytheir weaknesses and to work emphatically to overcome these by sitting the many trial examsthat are coming up. Moreover, I would urge our Year 12 students to seek assistance from ourschool counsellor or from their mentor teachers if they are struggling or feeling stressed abouttheir studies.Perhaps the most important activity this month was the inaugural alumni soccer tournament. Some very competitive games were held between graduates of the past few years. The finalmatch was fought between the 2007 and 2008 graduates, and as you may expect, theyounger team (2008) were the victors. It was great to catch up with our graduates; especiallythose from years 2002 and 2003. Yes, they are still around; a little less fit and slower(compared with our younger graduates!) but still joyous and very pleased to have been giventhe chance to reunite. At such moments, I once again find myself deeply thanking God forhaving inspired me to become a teacher and for putting me in the right environment at theright time. I am sure you will agree too, that although teaching is one of the most demandingprofessions, it is also one of the most rewarding. For teachers, nothing seems more cherishedthan the chance of receiving a friendly visit from, or the chance of having a short catch-upchat with, our very own graduates. One of our current Year 12 students, Emre Akgoz, is one of those rare students able toachieve a perfect score in a VCE subject. You may recall that he did this just last year in thesubject LOTE -Turkish. On the 21st of July, Emre was awarded the Victorian Premier's Awardby the Hon. Mr. John Brumby himself at a reception held at the Melbourne ConventionCentre. Our school administration invited the architect of this success, his teacher Mr. ErcanSakarya, to be a part of this historic ISIK College moment. He flew down from Sydneyespecially for the occasion and before he headed back, our 2006 graduates prepared asurprise reunion BBQ in his honour. Also, our Year 8s have once again proven their soccer talents by being named runners-up inthe XVIIIth Kanga International Soccer Tournament which was held in Canberra during July. This success came off the back of their earlier success in June when they came second in theVictorian Futsal Tournament. Well done boys and also to their coach, Mr. Mehmet Yilmaz.During the holidays I was also pleased to receive the great news about our Year 11 student,Anil Zirek. He was awarded first place in the University of Melbourne's Kwong Lee Dow YoungScholar Program - a writing competition in which hundreds of students participated. Anil, onceagain, has made his parents and all of us proud. Well done, Anil and keep delighting us withyour success stories throughout the rest of your ISIK College years and at university, too.On a final note, I strongly recommend that parents read our 2008 School Performance Datawhich is included in this issue. Your recent feedback via the parents' survey was also verymuch appreciated.Have a very successful semester 2, everyone.ICU Read 2

PFA SNOW TRIPDuring the semester holidays, the PFAorganised a family day trip to the snow.Again, this was another “first time ever”event organised by our PFA team. Itstirred up great interest because it was anevent in which the whole family couldparticipate and enjoy: a whole day in thesnow at Lake Mountain on Sunday 12thJuly without having to worry about comingto school the following day.All tickets had sold well in advance andseveral families sadly missed out. Our buswas scheduled to depart at 6.00am whilemany people arrived early to enjoy aspecially prepared breakfast of simits, sandwiches, tea and coffee.Once we headed off, we tried entertainingourselves by having a karaoke sing-along,but this was a bad idea so we watched aDVD instead. At the base of the mountain,we stopped at a hire store and equippedourselves for the harsh elements ahead. As we made our way up, we becameexcited as we got our first glimpse ofsnow. At the end of a day full of activities, weenjoyed a hot lunch at our leisure at theHeights Bar and Bistro courtesy of thePFA.Congratulations to our prize winners.Items in the prize pool were: a HarryPotter quilt set, a chess/games set, aguess handbag, a fishing rod and reel setand a $50 shopping voucher. Before we headed back down themountain, we fired up the barbie andenjoyed barbecued sucuk between slicesof bread and soft drinks and sweets, againcourtesy of the PFA.It was a fun-filled day of games and everyone was battered and worn by the end. Some watched a movie on the way home, but most just fell asleep from exhaustion. We arrived back at school just before8.00pm.A special thanks to the PFA for organisingsuch a joyous event and to all those whohelped at the barbecue. All through the day, many were heard toask: “What will the next event be?
