CHAMBER NEWS <strong>SHANGHAI</strong> PAGES Expo Impacts on Local Business Special Seminar The GCC l Shanghai was pleased to attend and co-host a seminar at the meeting centre of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee (CP- PCC), along with representatives of 40 organisations and member companies. Several speeches by representatives of the CPPCC outlined specific restrictions that should be expected during the 2010 World Expo. Presenters addressed limitations surrounding customs, electricity and traffic, but explained that the increase of controls is merely to assure high safety standards during the hectic Expo months. No restrictions will be placed on normal or fair goods, but explosive and dangerous commodities will succumb to stricter regulation. Companies should inform the government 24 hours in advance of the exact declaration before expecting such shipped goods as they will otherwise not be allowed into the deepwater harbour. A list of all goods placed under new restrictive measures will be published online before the Expo. Buildings that Last Workshop Energy Saving/Construction A case study from Suzhou by GPM and PWO guided Mr. Jan Willem Tak of Deerns Consulting Engineers through his presentation titled “The Sustainable Facility”. He spoke about the importance of consistency of information by stating that all project members must be involved from the early stages of planning. The client, of course, is particularly important. Therefore, sharing energy consumption information can help in project budgeting, which is good for the client and in turn saves energy. Mr. Tak introduced his motto, “What you don’t spend, you don’t have to save” - meaning proper planning results in less spending. The project lighting system, which featured motion sensor lights and dimmers that fade according to a room’s natural light, illustrated how spending extra money early into a project saves costs in the long term. The speaker then described the concept of energy balance, i.e. looking at hot and cold areas in a building and trying to balance them using Long Term Energy Storage (LTES). LTES was explained in layman’s terms as aquifers that hold water underground, storing heat from the summer and 52 April - May 2010 The area surrounding the Expo grounds now encompasses around 38 new roads and four new ship lines. Shanghai will be divided into traffic zones to handle the rush hours, but all drivers should expect an increase in taxis and buses near the city core. Shortly after their decision, several laws regarding environmental construction were changed, but PWO did not fret as they had already implemented procedures that meet the new environmental standards.
